  1. Does a resource file (PDF or JPG) work without this issue if you open it (instead of placing)? For instance either by dragging the item from an Explorer window onto the APub interface or pasteboard area (not onto a page / the layout) or by opening it via menu File > Open?

The status bar in your screenshot reports an object as being selected – whereas it automatically deselects an item if I "Place…" an item in APub V1 on mac. If you place an item: do you get a Place cursor displayed? Like so:

If you get this cursor, do you also get a preview of the resource displayed if you press a modifier key (e.g. CTRL, CMD, OPT) before clicking the mouse button?

I bought the 3 applications a few years ago for Windows on the Affinity website I think.
After 2 years of Windows I switched back to Mac and could install the software with the serial numbers.

Now I logged in on the website and updated to 1.10.8 and now Photo and Designer works again.
In the download page it said 'trial' but there was no other option. Will this keep working?

As loukash mentioned, this sounds confusing or unclear at least. Did you purchase V1 for Win and for Mac, too?

If yes, make sure you used the same login data as for the purchase and also get the same country displayed in the URL: There seems to be possible confusion for the Serif Store if I switch from the default country to a different (here manually via URL-text /en-us/): Then AD is offered to me as "Trial" only (while APub seems to work 'international') …

… whereas to me the default URL path /de/ offers AD as a purchased license correctly as expected:

  4. In addition to lacerto's hints an alternative workflow when individually deleting all missing resources can be via Preflight Panel: this allows to double click an entry + delete its layout instance with the delete key (without the need to use the Layers Panel or to close the RM window).

BTW, we also can not replace several selected resources in the Resource Manager with a different, common file – even if the selected files have identical dimensions + content + file type and differ in their file names only.

That isn't strictly true because AP can open a document made in AD that has artboards

I referred to "Canvas", you seem to talk about "Artboards". How many "Canvas" does your sample .aphoto contain? Again, canvas and artboards are different pairs of socks. If I open an .afdesign in APhoto than various options are simply disabled:

    • Resize Document
    • Resize Canvas
    • Clip/Unclip Canvas
    • Crop Tool

  6. In APhoto a document can have 1 "Canvas" only whereas in ADesigner a document can have multiple "Artboards" and of varying sizes. Thus the two apps don't work identically and the "clip/unclip canvas" option or the Crop Tool don't have the exactly same function and features on purpose.

To create an artboard in AD in the size of one ore more selected layer(s) choose the Artboard Tool, select "Selection" from the "Size" menu and click the "Insert Artboard" button. If your .afdesign contains artboard layers in the Layers Panel already you may need to move the selected object(s) into the newly created artboard layer and move an artboard to another position in the workspace area.

Alternatively you can create a new .afdesign by selected objects: Choose "Copy", then menu "File" -> "New From Clipboard".

    I would prefer wrapped

For wrapped text you need a vector shape used as text frame. Assuming a certain font size (in relation to the size of the image) the text shape doesn't need to have exactly the identical shape & details of your image.

Just in case: if you could use APublisher with its Text Wrap option to get the shape automatically created without a need to draw it yourself.

Alternatively you could use any vectorizer app to convert your raster image into a vector shape for text wrap.

  8. In print the physical dimension matters (inch, mm) and influences the visual resolution. You can downscale a video / screenshot with 72 dpi to achieve 300 dpi (the usual resolution for print of pixel images). An image/layout with more than 300 dpi would not be an advantage in the print result, whereas a resolution between 72 (or ~150) and 300 dpi may seem sufficient to your eye and depends on the video material.

the Cmd-Opt-Click method of selection is best understood as follows

Thank you! for your explanations, they made it more clear to me than just screenshots or recipes … while even experiencing this myself failed in the interpretation of visual results. I think I was mainly mislead by a.) my expectation that dark areas would be selected as more opaque / less transparent and b.) by the visible "marching ants" for the Luminance Selection via Opt-Cmd-Thumbnail-Click which made me think these light parts would be definitely (100%) excluded from the selection.

Do I assume right that Opt-Cmd thumbnail-click displays the ants marquee for pixels (areas) with less than 50% luminosity (<-> alpha below 128)?

Affinity UI also may confuse by imprecise rendering of "marching ants" at the canvas edges, which is also visible in James Ritson's video where the selection at the edges gets displayed only at the left and very subtle, while top, right, bottom edge don't show the marquee. – Did this improve in V2?

Flood Fill Tool: while I was aware of the influence of the click position + tolerance setting I appreciate your hint to the Fill option via menu command which would have been more useful for my examples to visualize the selection's transparency. (shame I did not consider this myself). Thank you again!

Finally it appears that your workflow with Exposure Adjustment + Blend Range Curve achieves the best results, whereas the Level Adjustment + Luminance Mask meets the OP's known/used workflow quick & easy but – without an additional e.g. blend range curve setting – seems to affect the bright areas more than possibly wanted or required.

Thomaso, I have no idea what you were doing when you created transparent sections in the image. But I gather that only applies in v2 of APh so I will not worry about it for the time being.

Like you I use V1 only. The transparency is a result from @smadell's hint to get an auto-selection created by a CMD-OPT-click on the image layer thumbnail (“Selection from Layer Intensity”). I used a fill (pink) color to make the transparency visible that occurred with this selection method. My examples were not meant as a hint for your topic's task but rather as a question to @smadell.

The second example (the pink fill without transparency) shows a standard menu command to auto-create the selection depending on luminosity. – Both this methods are available in V1.

But for both I still wonder in what situations they are useful while the exact definition of their selected colour ranges alias "Layer Intensity" appear unclear to me and creates a hard-edged selection.

  11. While the visual flexibility via text styles without using text at all appears impressive, I am just curious, where you are heading to? Do you have a certain goal in mind? Will text and character background colour get added, or Find & Replace to influence possible text via Regex?

With an increasing number of text styles (-> colours, shapes) it may become a competition to Tatsuo (who seems to "fake" in his pure Excel work with vector elements).

But unfortunatelly this is only available on the 'Pixel' persona. Sadly, I work in vectors.

Sounds like a bug to me. Why should the look of a cursor icon depend on a persona? – In macOS they are consistent / persona independent:

    maccursoronblackVector.jpg.4eaea581ffe9ba033855148e8e357f88.jpg

Does any Affinity cursor in a vector persona appear as 2-colour for you, e.g. the "create" cursor for Rectangle / Ellipse Tool? – FWIW, on mac each of the three app packages appears to contain over 100 cursor icon files in a folder "Resources" … but none of them shows in particular an elliptical or crosshairs brush or a text cursor or caret (while text cursors might be taken from macOS, brushes aren't used in macOS).

  13. To achieve the white border between fill and stroke you seem to use the offset options for the text style (while the insets for cells is 0.4 mm only) – but your vertical offsets of 7 mm (top) and 8 mm (bottom) are confusing me. What visual result do you get if you set them to 0 or 1 mm for the text style (paragraph decoration), keeping the cell insets in the Table Panel at 0.4 mm? And what font + size do you have set (unfortunately you excluded the Context Toolbar from your video)?

Compare below: Decoration indents are all 0 mm, white border is achieved with Cell insets 1 mm:

when I invert that layer and then pain it in white...nothing happened. The problem is I had accidentally set my blend mode to linear burn...

Apart from a blend mode getting set "accidentally" (?) (other than e.g. opacity), there are reports about brush colour confusion in particular for masks, e.g. sometimes the Colours Panel switches to grayscale, sometimes it does not, sometimes brush colour gets auto-set to 0% opacity while 100% would be required and expected.
