  1. > if I've upset you in any way no, you did not. Also, -_- , I feel sorry if my reaction did sound like beeing upset. I just got confused and/but felt shure you want to be informed about any such users' insureness. This is what 'beta' is about, right? However, just pls make shure not to 'surprise' any not [fixed] issue or wording in the a beta. btw: I am a youngtimer in this forum: there are posts about 'beta 5'. – Long time ago? I experience beta names like "17644" or "18089". I feel shure it would help anyone if you would use one strictly consequent naming for beta versions. And for any users posting, too, if needed. Up to you: forums structure: by beta? = by date ? Shure?
  2. @matt, @andy, your reply in https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/560-selection-marqu%C3%A9-tools-constrain-aspect-ratio-and-slow-speed/&p=2336 does irritate me. I don't see any tool called "select" besides a various marque tools in pixel mode – whereas a beta mail mentioned "Select tool ... constrain aspect ratio" and matt asked/replied "I assume" concerning my initial question. Just in case Affinity has more than the the rich bunch of Marque Tools of pixel mode ("persona"? you might want to consider to define/name them accordingly in the later manual & online help. (compare 2 screenshots attached: "marque", "selection") (i'll check in next beta: marque: constrain aspect ratio – and let you know here)
  3. ... or is it usefull/working to have more than 1 beta installed to compare versions? Usually I do keep the previous beta versions to be able to compare just in case. Last week it happened that a beta appears to have overwritten a feature which - as far i remember - did work well in its previous beta. (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/659-mask-layer-selection-page-size-instead-object/?p=2226) So I wonder: Are beta versions independent to each other – or do they use some common files? In other words: Does a former beta still work exactly like its original beta stage - or are some files in common use and features get overwritten by a beta update (pref, system, library files)?
  4. @ Andy, I might misunderstand you: To me you sound to think it can't be solved or can't get any influenced by Affinity? (Yes, nowadays: I am aware this request isn't general GUI of mac. And as if blocked-by-apple for 3rd party developers.) Serif Affinity occurs close: All but 1 application window opens as saved, both in position & size. Only the document window lacks in intuitive usage. – Much work? Appearently a system main menu bar influence issue. – Indeed? This topics desire got solved a while ago step by step: whereas InDesign CS4 still needed the user to click a script to fit a documents window according to the users monitors and application-panel setting, CS5.5 simply did remember its documents window position & size by default. Such a script for instance: tell application "Adobe InDesign CS4" set Disp to (do shell script "system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep Resolution | awk '{print $2, $4}'") if Disp contains "1920 1200" then -- your screen resolution set bounds of layout window 1 to {-1200, -240, 0, 1680} end if end tell Hm, aha, p.s.: some applications behave likewise by default. – In lack of a 'document window'? – Those do remember their windows positions & size. For instance: • Mac OS X (Finder ... & various system tools), • Browsers (... Firefox, Chrome, Safari), • Cyberduck, ... • Carbon Copy Cloner, ... • DeepMeta, ... • Garage Band ( including its document windows:-) @ Andy, Mobile computers, occasionally docked onto additional fixed placed monitors, will happen more often. – Agree?
  5. Nobody with two monitors? – I need to drag every document window from the macbooks (start-) screen to the second but larger monitor and aditionally need to drag-scale each documents window size to fit between the panels/options/panes/palettes windows. This is a behavior I haven't experienced for ages, [nowadays to me only "Photomatix" ('HDRsoft') occures this way.] Am I doing any wrong? Am I want to much? Are two monitors more than 'normal' (=usual?) for macbook, ipad ... or nowadays hardware 4K screen resolution with multiple monitor support? I attach screenshots of a 2-monitor-situation (15''+ 24'') – and I do trust AndyS post: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/661-option-drag-to-copyduplicate/?p=2317
  6. I want humble recommend to develope Affinity strictly mac-like according GUI (shortcuts, key commands, buttons, windows, ...). It has been also consistency, consequence which made and makes mac applications so intuitive. Less for my convenience but rather for marketing reasons. I definitly would feel sorry to see Affinities success risked or reduced by breakings with such 'rules'. quote (Matthias, #6): > "The reason for this non-standard behavior seems to be the selection feature: Alt-dragging changes the way elements are selected." Agree. I'd exspect the cmd-key to alter a selection instead. For instance in mac finder to add/reduce in a bunch of selected files or in InDesign or Quark to jump between object selection of (child-)layers. – So it appears Affinity should simply turn cmd to alt/option and vice versa in affected cases.
  7. @ lenogre, fyi, a duplicate function already does exist via menu 'Edit' and/or keys: 'command-J' or 'command-C'+'command-V'. Whereas this topic requests for a duplicate function via mouse-drag + use of mac-like 'Option'-key while dragging. @ MEB, > There's already a shortcut to do that: cmd + drag Aha, good to know. Any reason for 'cmd' instead mac-like 'option'-key to duplicate any object, intuitivly?
  8. An Option-drag of a selected object on Mac mostly causes the selected object to be duplicated after it gets released. I'd appreciate to use this GUI behave in Affinity. On document page view and in Layers panel, too.
  9. I agree. And I add another issue: A locked mask layer with active yellow lock symbol appears not to be locked correct: If you select its parent layer in the layers panel the locked mask layer gets selected, too. If the mask layer is a layer by its own you can still select via the layers panel with the lock symbol active.
  10. This mainly concerns help/manual, then GUI. I can't understand the idea/concept behind the term "personas" plus some of its features descriptions. I guess these tow modes are much less strictly separated than described here and there. How lucky! – But Affinity's help says: • Draw Persona Draw lines and shapes Add vector brush strokes Add fills and transparency Create art and frame text Add and crop photos and vector images • Pixel Persona Make freehand, shape, and brush-based selections Add pixel brush strokes Erase using pixel brushes Retouch with dedicated tools I can see why these two modes became differentiated. I can't understand the way it is described/documented in help and gui. For instance: "Draw lines and shapes" <–> true in both modes "Add fills and transparency" <–> true in both modes "Add and crop photos"<–> true in both modes (crop in pixel mode by eraser) "Retouch with dedicated tools" <–> true in both modes "Make freehand, shape, and brush-based selections" <–> true in both modes "Erase using pixel brushes" <–> true in both modes (I even can draw a line in pixel mode to 'erase' (mask) a line of vector mode. (...etc. ...) Last but not least: Affinity offers some mode mixing options via the Assistant. So: • Would you mind to differentiate these two modes more clearly, more precise both in help and gui? • How about "Mode" instead of "Persona"? ('persona' means human character attitude, right?) • Do this two modes need at all any supplement like persona or mode, in the sake to save screen space in the GUI? • Use two different colors in wireframe and (child)layers to visualize any objects/layers creation mode. A third color for text objects would help, too.
  11. > a little toggle button - at the bottom left of the layers panel Andy, yes, exactly the feature I was looking for. But you continued: > You can also hold the Cmd key to make click / drag selection select child objects of groups, etc. Nope, to me it is the Option key – not Cmd. ... And/but it works like a charm! ; )
  12. In a document with some "Draw personas" and some "Pixel personas" layers ( hm, what does "personas" stand for?) to me it appears to be difficult to select some objects by clicking on its visual in the documents page view. Yes, I can click through the "Layers" panel – but I wonder if I am doing any wrong when I try to select an(y) object just visually on its documents area view. –> Is it possible to achieve/select any object (= child layer) on a documents 'paper'/'screen' view? –> If yes: how? – Any keys to hit while clicking? It seems it helps/i need to switch "personas" to enable one or the other object selection in the documents view. – Is this intended?
  13. Double click on a layer: A double click on a layer does not consistently do a zoom to the layers content to me. Ca. 50% of clicks it does not do anything. And it gets less % in documents where "draw" and "pixel personas" are mixed.
  14. document window size: In "Seperated Mode" each document opens in size of 1880 x 1320 pixel. To adjust it to the available screen space (minus Affinity pane/palette/tab windows) it needs two manual mouse move interactions: a document window move to for instance upper left position and a window size adjustment move by dragging the lower right window corner to make such a separated document window fit between the programs pane/palette/tab/toolbar windows. With two monitors and some program panes/palettes/tabs spread over both areas its even a bit worse: Any document window opens on main screen (the one with menu) and always at a same default postion and size, regardless of any program window already opened, means it even gets placed behind a bunch of panes/palettes/tabs which do fill this one of the two monitors. –> more request: • any document window should recognize any existing program window and gets auto-placed in the available position and space. or as compromise at least: • any document window should remember its position and size when its file got saved.
  15. I'd like to understand the concept behind the two types of panes (parameter/option windows, palettes, tabs). Some of them can be arranged snapping, others can't, but have the mac-like buttons in the upper left corner to enlarge, minimize or close them and those have a close button, too. Pure, real, tabbed panes: Transform, Color, Swatches, Line, Brushes, Styles, Effects Mac-like windows: Character, Paragraphs, Layer Effects Especially "Effects" appears irritating to me since it is implemented twice: as pane/palette/tab and as window, too. Is there any use/advantage I didn't understand yet for the GUI of the Character and Paragraph windows? Or could they be panes/palettes, too? Furthermore there are features which don't have parameters and they are arranged all together in one window, the "Toolbar". When clicking one of them it results in an immediate action and alteration of page objects, like functions, algorythms. – Whereas the tools are in "Tools", not in "Toolbar". – Could the "Toolbar" functions be panes/palettes/tabs like the others? Last but not least there is one area (without name?): the context sensitive multi-functional but tiny bar below the "Toolbar". In this area I can click to open almost all the windows and panes mentioned above. I'd appreciate to understand the thoughts behind this 'supermarket of windows' – or to see the offer slimmed for easer use with less flickering on screen. If various hardware (screen sizes) is the reason for this massive windows offer, why not offer just one more pre-selecting choice, for instance "Monitors", "Laptop", "Phone".
  16. Whereas around 'beta 5' the autosave of windows obviously got realized ( https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/93-remember-window-size/&p=649 ), now in beta 1.0.17644 I'd appreciate to develope this feature a bit more: a.) Save window/palette/pane * settings customizable (by name, date etc) – and b.) Consider palette positions for document window in Separate Mode. Designers often work with two monitors and use one to place the document, the other to place palettes. Therefore it would be helpful to be able to save customized window settings with customized saves for various usage. Additionally the Separated Mode / document window could like an improvement: Momentarily in Separated Mode with palettes cusomized arranged the/ a new document window a.) has a fixed size and position and b.) appears to ignore the customized palette setting. Also, once you hit the mac-system green button (upper left corner), it simply fills the screen – regardless any palette * window. * [ ps: "palette" – to avoid misunderstanding: I dont mean a color palette like in the swachtes pane but any pane/palette/parameter/options window. ]
  17. I agree, I'd appreciate to have it Mac typically: To close the 'last' document window without quitting the application.
  18. It appears that every file I place gets embedded (concerning to the layers comment behind the objects name and concerning to the documents file size). Is there a way to place objects as linked instead embedded?
