Affinity Publisher Public Beta - 1.7.0.192
thomaso replied to AdamW's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Because I suspect this message only appears because of the app-update when opening an existing document I post it at this topic. >> I have never called or knowingly used a file called "Image Mask 1.jpg". p.s.: I am glad to notice that "linked" starts to fight against "embedded" successfully EDIT: Solved – Please excuse these quick posting. It is not related to the app-update. The missing image was a placed screenshot I meanwhile discovered in Recource Manager. -
Numbered List Override Text Issue
thomaso replied to Mr. K's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
A 'real', a user friendly, problem solving would fundamentally renew the UI concept of lists, e.g. show all indents in the text frame and in the text ruler and in panel "Paragraph" > "Tab Stops", too, AND have them edited here and there, including left, center, right, comma, dot etc. AND would enable to find them via Find & Replace. – The need for spaces AND the separate text box within the bullet options section would become redundant. A tab is a tab is a tab – isn't it? https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/73122-numbered-lists/&tab=comments#comment-383379 -
Affinity Publisher Public Beta - 1.7.0.192
thomaso replied to AdamW's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Impressive list! Thank you! (It's more for your self-check and you don't expect me to have it in mind before any posting, – right?) Preflight? – Can any preflight be triggered by the user, too? Can I install two different beta versions - or do they conflict with each other / override shared data? -
Numbered List Override Text Issue
thomaso replied to Mr. K's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
It would be simpler to insert a space in the Bullets & Numbers text field, right behind the blueish tab symbol. Unfortunately it is disabled to insert any space there, the spaces are grayed out. There it would be simpler. (possibly a default work around in AFPub: auto-insert a zero space together with a tab in Bullets & Numbers?) Also it would be simpler to insert a space via find & replace. Unfortunately this is disabled, too: A search for 'tab' finds all others in any document's text frame – excepted those created in "Bullets and Numbers". -
Print dialog needs work
thomaso replied to MacBrian's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Agree. – Concerning recently selected "Pages" seems partially to be remembered in the print options: In the preview it shows my recent page range selection ( 2 pages only) as picture and in words – whereas it has no entry in the according "Pages:" text field. (screenhot). Finally indeed it prints the complete document - which is annoying if you have trusted the pages preview information. Export options might be related to this topic: Also in "Export" I would expect the app to remind the recent selection of "Area" (page vs spread etc). Working already is the recent page number, unfortunately it gets grayd-out and hampered by the auto-reset of "Area" from page to spreads after each print action. -
Colour management - RGB Profiles
thomaso replied to thomaso's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
>> when exporting to PDFX4 are you expecting it to be in RGB? Yes, if RGB was selected as export color space/profile, than I do expect RGB. • In the mentioned trials above (b.) there are RGB images in the resulting PDF as expected – but with CMYK output intent for the PDF. THIS is what confuses me. Instead I'd expect my document color space and profile (set in Document Setup > Colour > Colour format, Colour Profile) to become the output intent profile, too. • Also I would expect to get "warned" when I paste a file with a different color space than the document's, if this option is activated in Applications "Preferences" > "Colour". (screenhot left) • Another confusion here is the function and setting of the two buttons "Assign" and "Convert". I don't know how I may prefer "Assign" generally, cause once I select it and enter OK + close the window, then next time "Convert" is active again. (screenshot right) >> Part of the X4 spec is it has to be in CMYK ... Not necessarily. Since PDF/X-3 also RGB or even CIE are possible/allowed. But if AFPub really intends to limit and reduce the PDF/X-4 color space to CMYK (which would be a pity), then the UI should prevent the user from choosing a different color space after selecting PDF/X-4. (compare in the UI: when PDF/X-1 got selected then RGB is not available any more) >> ... and U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 is the default CMYK profile. Hm. Imho there is no such "the" default profile for PDF/X. Rather, the idea of standardizing PDF/X is to make it easier, more error-free and loss-less to use and interchange between different color spaces, means enable the communication between various color spaces, like for instance CMYK for print and RGB for screen. Last but not least to support the needs of different workflows globally (asia, europe, america). So I'd expect the outputintent to be either the document color space or the selected export profile. >> ... You mention where this profile does not appear? What PDF settings is this in relation to? The U.S. Web ...icc appears as output intent in the PDF but not in the profile list in export settings. Excuse my unclear expression. Actually I do not want this CMYK profile appear in RGB export settings profile menu but also I don't expect it in the resulting PDF but the set RGB profile instead. For sample under b.) in my initial post the document color space was set to RGB with sRGB... profile (s. screenhot above), the export setting, too. I used 3 JPGs, each with embedded profile: RGB jpg + "sRGB IEC61966-2.1" CMYK jpg + "iso coated v2 (ECI)" grayscale jpg + "Schwarze Druckfarbe iso coated v2 (ECI)" In addition to the above post, the GRAYSCALE export color space could be linked to this topic. When I export the document as a grayscale PDF & grayscale profile, all three JPGs in the resulting PDF file are grayscale images and have the selected export grayscale profile. However, these grayscale PDF files contain no output intent and the images do not appear in black only, but unfortunately in CMYK. If you still need my document let me know – I think you can reproduce this issues with any jpg in the mentioned color space and profile. -
PDF Export - huge Files!
thomaso replied to MartinHH's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
It seems weird that the file size increases with higher (newer) PDF versions. I'd expect it to be vice-versa. Especially PDF/X-1a, which would must save as CMYK only, should increase the file size, not decrease it. However, even the 1.25GB appear too high, that means an average of 5 MB per page. (I'd expect 2-3 MB) – So I still would like to know: What color space did you set your document? What color space do you export? (RGB or CMYK, what profiles?). Are in your document Photos only, or other types of graphics, too? What got placed in your document regarding to ... ... Photo files: RGB or CMYK? – And with or without embedded profiles? ... Transparency: Yes or no? – If yes, for what type of object? (vector or rasterized/pixel) I recommend to run tests with just a few, average pages only - instead of all 216. Saves time and space and nerves. > "I'm pretty upset about that cause there are not so many print-shops who are able to create books from pdf uploads." No reason to feel upset. This is a Beta and you are aware of it. / PDF upload enable for instance: blurb, saal, viaprinto -
Agree. For instance the 'Tabstops:' in 'Bullets and Numbers', because they do neither appear in 'Paragraph' pane > 'Tab Stops' nor in the text ruler. Also confuses me that I may simply add a Tabstop BEFORE the lightblue Layer icon (representing the number) in 'Text:' of 'Bullets...' – but it does not work at all. And, if I may place a tabstop in this field, it confuses that I can't switch them from left to right via control-click + context menu, like in textruler's tabstops. According to the tab which I may place BEHIND the Layers icon (and its dot), I would expect in this UI field to find end edit both tabs, one for the numbers, second for text. But, actually: Wouldn't this be the expected GUI? : All list indents as tabstops (in the ruler and in 'spaces'). Hm, somehow the GUI of the auto-list function does not seem to have finished yet. I'm curious what happens when the "More ..." button will become activated.

Thanks MicRose. To see it done did inspire me to find it out. But, honestly, your hint quoted above and your screenshots indeed both helpful and confusing, too. Because a.) I was able to st the tab for numbers in the text-ruler and b.) the tabstops in your textruler at ca. 50 and 40 are - for the shown text frames - irrelevant. In my experience the workflow is this: 1. Set the "First Line Indent" to define the right boarder/position of numbers + dots. You either set it ... ... graphically in the text ruler (the triangle from above) ... ... or numerically in 'Paragraph' pane > 'Spacing'. Both reflect each other. 2. Set the left edge/position of the list items (the "text") with a numerical entry in 'Paragraph' pane > 'Bullets and Numbering' > 'Tabstops:'. That's it. Actually. Optional: If your list items include line breaks, then you set another tab, either in "Spaces" or in the text ruler. (probably the same as in 'Tabstops:"

Export "Current Page" (...)
thomaso replied to thomaso's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Chris_K, thanks for your reaction. Unfortunately, the file no longer exists in its status from my post last Friday. Good news: I can not reproduce the problem with this or any other documents. So it seems to have been a temporary hiccup of application or this .afpub. p.s: I have no problem at all identifying the page number I'm working on. Since the number in the lower left corner is not necessarily current (although it is updated immediately as soon as an element is selected), I orient myself in the pages panel, which synchronously shows the gray border around the spread in the main window. -
PDF Export - huge Files!
thomaso replied to MartinHH's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Obviously it is: I did a test with 3 images in 40x30 cm. The original fotos are RGB, saved in 100% quality, they have 4 MB + 8,3 MB + 9,9 MB = 22,2 MB. With pdf 1.7 , RGB, 75% quality, I get a PDF with 7,7 MB Same setting with CMYK creates 25 MB. When I optimize the cmyk PDF in Acrobat (without image change) it results in 6,1 MB. The optimized rgb PDF has 5,8 MB. That means: The CMYK pdf export appears not much effective in AFPub concerning file size. I expect CMYK to be roughly 35% larger than RGB, not 200%. (Though it's more effective than printing as PDF via Apples macOS "Save as PDF"-Feature: that results in 123 MB for these 3 pages.) @MartinHH, you seem to export as CMYK. If yes, I recommend you an RGB export. Whitewall does offer and will be able to handle it. Since you named your pdf preset "Whitewall" I assume according to your enormous file sizes that you downloaded any of their special .icc profiles which might be CMYK. There is no need for this workflow; your PDF contains information about its used profile and will pass it to the printer software which will respect it for its print result. -
Numbered List Override Text Issue
thomaso replied to Mr. K's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Great hint! I did not know this 1-word-selection before. Another, less elegant workaround to select the first letter(s) [without using "Initial Words"]: In the textframe type a space behind the tab of the number-element and directly before your text. It allows to select your text until the space. [ Unfortunately: if you type the space in the Bullets and Numbering options text field, then its pasted in all list items with one go – but the trick does not work anymore / you can't select your text without the space that way.] -

Format the items as character style, not paragraph style. And the numbers in the numbers panels style menu, not in paragraph style menu. numbers & items styles.mov -
I'm curious.....

"Feel" is a good key in this matter – even technical software always is emotional, too. I totally agree with your thoughts (which also include the desire for "nothing should change"). The 'problem' is not initiated by Serif but more by first machines up to nowadays people's speed – which demands changes in all sorts of things to survive in the competition of life. We don't need to run away from wild animals anymore, so the population increased. As consequency we create new stress to create enough food for all people on earth. Reduced: Safety > food > money > work > changes > emotions. The same happens, on a smaller scale, with software, for instance to me: Pagemaker > Freehand > Quark > InDesign > AFPublisher. It just would not make sense if Pagemaker's programmers were still trying to update the code for today's hardware. Or it would be very expensive. Just as it would be very luxurious to drive a 1959 car in 2019 and keep it running simply because the design was so beautiful. http://www.savethesounds.info/ -
Changing page order

– To feel like that for your mother tongue appears to me even more funny if you can't compare it with another language. I don't expect a language to be intelligent, it should be working, enable to express yourself. English grammar seems at least more flexibel than German. Studio? Also for one single element, like "the Pages Studio does not scroll"? -
PROGRAM CRASHES WHEN USING WORD WRAP
thomaso replied to dsahwahnee's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Text Wrap works quite charming here with fill text. @dsahwahnee, is your page more complex? @Old Bruce, in which way does the "sort of things" have an influence? I'd guess the demanding task is the textflow around the objects, not the object content. -

Ah!, nice feature, I haven't seen yet, Thanks! So it is even more weird that your page move scroll does not work: because mine in macOS luckily even scrolls on page moves in the pages pane when "Scroll with view" is unselected. p.s.: which are correct or common English terms: Pages pane | panel | palette ? -

thomaso replied to Chrisw5's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Windows collegues, do you have in the top-right pulldown menu of pages palette the option "Scroll With View"? -
Dave, like Chrisw5 in this align numbers desire I also can't experience an effect in the 3 buttons, too. I did set a first line indent in various situations: with the text cursor placed in the first line, with all text selected and also with just the black arrow cursor selected. Also I added an additional tab in the tabs field before the bluish L symboI. These additional tabs appear as symbols in the text frame in front of the numbers as expected but I can't manage them to have any influence. Toggling the three buttons (right of the tabs field) seems to have no effect at any time during this various actions – exept that it occasionally made the additional tab disappear (delete) from the tab field and the text frame. p.s.: have a good break-sit or holiday or just time!

PDF Export - huge Files!
thomaso replied to MartinHH's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I would not export with 100% quality in this case. Even 75-90 % is almost unvisible but reduces the file size enormous up to 50% depending on the amount of photo details. Take a look at this impressive comparisons, see a bunch of different example photos, each in its different quality and file size: http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/jpeg-quality#surprise Also you could try a newer PDF version than 1.4 – unless Whitewall demands this. Finally – if you have access to Acrobat Pro – you can reduce the file size after export by deleting unnecessary data from the PDF. – For instance: if I print a jpg in 30x20 cm with the "Save as PDF" feature in Apple macOS than it results in a PDF with 23 MB. The cleaning process in Acrobat Pro reduces it down to 3,5 MB (without touching the image quality). Honestly I experienced such a huge difference only with this Apple PDF yet. A quick 1-page test with Affinitys export as Print PDF did not reduce the file size at all in this Acrobat cleaning. It's not only the export settings which influences the file size of a PDF but also the code/library which is used. That is, you can not necessarily achieve exactly the same file size if you use the same settings with different export software. Like you reduce the file size of an .indd occasionally, also a PDF can include data which can be seen as unnecessary garbage. -
image size / stretch info?
thomaso replied to thomaso's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
"truncated" in which way? If you see only 1 DPI value, it is even healthier. 2 values are displayed when the image has been stretched. Then horizontal and vertical resolution are different. -
image size / stretch info?
thomaso replied to thomaso's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Ah, indeed, yes, we can! There it tells the original pixel dimensions and values for the effective resolution. Thank you for your persistence – I had a different understanding for context menu, the pop-up which opens on control-click (how do you call these?)
