object style definition
thomaso replied to thomaso's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
@dominik, your screenshot and your hint to the little, always grayed-out palette icon to save a gradient swatch did solve my initial topic's problem. Thank you! Shortcut 'G' possibly shows a difference of preset shortcuts between Windows and Mac OS ? – Definitely in my still factory-default shortcut set the letter G is not used in the tool section and the Fill Tool has no shortcut assigned. Not a problem to me but it shows one for communication in this forum's section which does not separate between different OSs. Also, your hint that a gradient swatch can not be edited in the swatches panel is helpful to stop mad made thinking. Thanks again! I wonder why you consider possibly to be 'completely wrong' with your idea of usability inconsistencies? Is it the complexity of necessery places and windows which makes you doubt about your experience here? To me there is at least one real bug in the gradient UI: the definitely wrong gradient Swatch color editor: it has not only no use there but even destroys a saved swatch, even not-undoable, once you touch a slider. I assume there is meant to appear the gradient option window (from the menu bar) instead of the color slider window (which may appear in a later step). Fill Tool: Is not it just a gradient tool? From a Fill Tool I'd expect to define not gradients only but even other inserts like photos or any graphics. I might not have noticed all Fill Tools skills yet, please let me know! Else I agree with your impression of being a gradient tool only (- which would make sense for shortcut 'G') By the way, actually, the Fill Tool is not necessary to define gradient colors: You can achieve the gradient color options also with Move/Black arrow or Text Tool selected, simply by clicking the "Fill:" color box in the menu bar and selecting the Gradient section in the popping up window. So, actually, the Fill Tool defines the position of a gradient (direction, lengths, shape) only. -
object style definition
thomaso replied to thomaso's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
@dominik, unfortunatlely I neither can discover a 'Gradient Tool', nor does any tool become active with shortcut 'G'. But I found the gradient definition and its according colors set in the context menu bar of the "Fill Tool". The help-doc does not tell the complete workflow: though it says that 'noise' can be edited in the color panel, I dont know how to save such as swatch. It seems to me the UI offers as savable swatches only 1-color + noise but no gradient (2 or more colors) or gradient + noise. When I choose to save a gradient then it results in a swatch of 1 plain color only – no gradient, no noise. 1) Gradient definition - but not savable?.. > 2) Gradient save option, noise not editable? ............ >> .......... 3) Saved swatch: no gradient, no noise? >> >> In Color panel I find a noise-slider – if the palette 'Gradients' is selected. But there I can't see an ability to define a gradient but single color swatches only (with or without noise). Furthermore: if I touch, just tap on a color slider (even without moving it) in one of the predefined gradients, then the gradient disappears immediately and completly. Last but not least, such a disappearing gradient definition as a not-undoable action, which makes things more complicate. And, because the predefined 'Gradients' is an Application Palette, I seem to have lost this gradient totally. So, since I found the noise-slider but no way to save a gradient w/wo noise, my question converts to: • If there is a 'Gradient Tool': what icon has it? • Where do I save a gradient? And where a gradient + noise? • Isn't it hard to communicate precise when there are 2 color panels, one as Studio panel, the other as sub-panel of the context-menu of the Fill Tool? -
You might try it first with just a few pages, lets say 8. To get 2 sheets (4 pages on each sheet). Some printers (machines) print sheets in reversed order, some don't. That could result in an unwanted order in the output paper stack/pile, which you then manually would have to sort sheet by sheet. Your desired view of the sheet order in the output stack: • on top of the stack: the 2 middle pages of your brochure and, • on the stack's bottom: the Title page + last page. p.s.: As you called it "book" (not booklet or brochure): note that, unlike the comb or glue binding, with staples ... • the total number of pages is limited • when folded, the inner sheets protrude from the stack on the edges parallel to the fold. You need to cut the folded stack to make the pages easy to turn around.

Swatch/Colour Pallette
thomaso replied to DanEv's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Works for me: The according swatch gets a white stroke. In list view the name gets highlighted. -
Yes, it's in the print options > Click on "Range and Scale" and select "Document Layout" from the pulldown menu. In the appearing "Model:" pulldown menu select "Booklet".

>> in the new document set up, the colour is set to RGB, Feel free to save a preset with CMYK - and all new documents will be CMYK. >> confusing to have two Print options in the set up. What "set up"? – When I select "File" > "Print..." then I get my usual – system defined – print options window. With about 15 - 20 options: printer, size, range, scale, ... >> Print options should default to cmyk. Are you talking about sth related to Affinity Publisher? As far I know there is no color space selection in "Print...". – Would you mind to show a screenshot? Good point. The color palette should know and show colors in document's color space by default. – What do you mean with "in the other options"?

Placed Images
thomaso replied to Peter Rodbourn's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
What is the "place images panel"? Are you talking about a.) your computers file selection window once you clicked the "Place Image Tool" which you canceled to select another tool? Or do you mean b.) AFPub's place cursor (not panel) which follows after you had made your selection in that window and which you interrupt by selecting another tool? My workflow with the place tool for more than 1 image would be to place & scale them – and do other work later. Or to decide while place action that sth else is more important now. Then I'd be glad that the – now unimportant – images do not hang around in RAM without knowing if they ever will become wanted and used.- 6 replies

I apply an object style to a text frame. To get rid of it, I disable all layer effects* – all gone except for a grainy gradient, which also appears in the circled color and swatches previews, with HSL sliders in color palette. This structure appears to be resolution-independent: when I zoom in it is more detailed. – Great! When I now in the color pane move a slider, or switch from HSL to CMYK, both the texture and the gradient disappear, leaving an average color. No gradient, no structure. – Where is this structure defined? – Can I access the grainy structure seperately? * is there a shorter way to remove an object style than unselecting its layer-effects one by one?

Can not open crashed file
thomaso replied to fluffy sheep's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Any reason for not even local snapshots? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204015 – "Your Time Machine backup disk might not always be available, so Time Machine also stores some of its backups on your Mac. These backups are called local snapshots. (...) Time Machine saves one snapshot of your startup disk approximately every hour, and keeps it for 24 hours." -
Sorry, my language problem. I meant "paste" in some way from "add", "paste", "integrate" ... (it's more commonly "paste" into German usage), of course, including the file path information. No link without linked location. However, I noticed several times, that a linked file became marked in the Manager at a later moment (other day for instance) as embedded. So, if I reset it to linked in the manager, it happens to become switched back to embedded occasionally. I could not recognize a rule or system in this yet.

Can not open crashed file
thomaso replied to fluffy sheep's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I can not open your .afpub: both versions 174 and 192 crash immediately. (p.s .: on double-click your .afpub tries to open here in v.174, not 192) Work around: have it in local snapshot timemachine backup? -
It's a preference: select "Prefer linked" either in the options menu of either "New Document" or "Document Setup". Unfortunately "Prefer Linked" appears to get ignored occasionally, so it might happen that suddenly a pasted file is shown as embedded it the Resource Manager. It even occurs that a reset in the Manager back to linked becomes switched again by the app later [ somehow devilish, in the dark, when you don't look ... ]

Rename Master Page?
thomaso replied to wyenphoto's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I agree, the needed pause between two taps is not intuitive. (non-rentina mac, v.192) Also I usually try - if clicks don't work - to enter the name text box by using the enter key. (like for file names in macOS finder) Additionally it might help to have an entry "Rename..." in the ctrl-click context menu. (or/and have the name in spread properties) ... compare swatch renaming ... -

Text Ruler: text cursor marker
thomaso replied to thomaso's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
>> if it is displaying outside of the ruler, I would expect that to be a bug. @fde101, - what about inside but with offset? Do you get similar results - or does it work for you, within the ruler only? -
What is the purpose of the cursor marker in a text ruler? – At first I thought it would inform me about the horizontal distance of the text cursor to the left edge of the text frame. Meanwhile it seems to have something else in mind. But what? Where it works charming for tabs & indent positions, the text cursor marker confuses me: I'd expect it just to mirror my text cursor vertically into the ruler. Instead it does something I need help for understanding. I noticed only that both the font size and the frame width do influence this marker's position – but in which way? Could someone explain please, what the cursor marker does mark in the following examples? The distance of the markers one to the other remains the same but with an offset: > The markers offset can become massive, both to the right or left of the frame/ruler: Influence of frame width: – Or is it simply a bug? 170192 text ruler cursor marker.afpub

There is a default text style "Box" (Base > Body) which creates a box with Stroke and Fill (Paragraph panel > Decorations). Very smart! This default "Box" shows a black stroke whereas in Decoration options it seems to have NONE color assigned. – How does it work? Also I'd like to understand more about the 3 possible ways to set No Stroke: • Color None (different to above;) • Width None • Width 0 Is there anything I should know about to avoid later issues? Or do they just the same thing as they appear to do?

min hight of palettes in 1.7.0.192
thomaso replied to thomaso's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
>> Try using Timed Screen for including stuff that disappears. Nope. Doesn't take the cursor, too. (Instead I could choose 1 of 7 predefined cursors.) – Have you tried it? QuickTime captures a cursor but not AFPub's original: QT does not show AFPub's double arrow, instead a downwards arrow only, on the total way. Can you in v.192 reduce the height of the character panel further than shown in my picture above? Bad compromise but a video with the original cursors: min hight character panel-2.mp4 -
Find and Replace Issues
thomaso replied to Seneca's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
>> 1. You can't tab from Find field to Replace with field. To me a tapped tab key guides to and highlights the pulldown menu icon next to the find text box. Its first entry tells the key for tab in find: \t >> 2. The Replace All button (...) I might misunderstand you, this appears to work for me: I select one of the found entries and click "Replace", then, without any step between I click "Replace All" and it does what expected. So if I want to find and replace something else I am glad I must enter the find button again – to avoid a "Replace All" now would do any change to elements in the previous result list. -
PDF-export alert - revisited
thomaso replied to kai2's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
Can you achieve successful export as PDF/X when you convert the text(s) into curved before? -
A search for "Yes, we scan" is looking for "Yes" only. (as in the previous version 1.7.0.174). "Comma, coma, come on!" does a search only for "comma". Still refuses the search from and including a comma glyph ... Whereas a search for "," lonely, does find any comma. Also ",," or ",,," etc. gets found fine.

recent text styles in new frames
thomaso posted a topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I'd like to create a new, virgin text frame without any previous setting, except the minimum definition of font, size, default line space. – Nothing else. It appears, at least sometimes, not to be possible. How can I get rid of, for instance, indents? Is it me who must reset? If yes, can it be done with 1 click? Start here: A new text frame comes with unexpected and unwanted intends/tabs ... Try the attached .afpub ... 170192 no style nostyle nostyle.afpub
