subtractive vs. additive

I yearn for a functioning color space lock since early betas. I see myself locked in the opinion this lock does nothing yet than to remind. Whomever.
k-only
cmyk
hsl
rgb
lab
In physics and optics it's not that one can switch harmless between those areas. Even though it might look appealing. A wave is not a pixel but every pixel has a wave.
Black is beautiful. And bright. But as long one can not detect whether its value is between 0, 100 , 127, -128 or 255 ... on 1 tint level, or on 2 or 3 or 4 ... how could one guess a colors' open end, without a lock?

I just duplicated the items... So I don't understand how the setting could be different. If you duplicate the last one, then the new duplicated item will have backgground latered and the previous will be OK; Weird, ins't it ?
Do you get any change – either with copies or any "last object" – on page view within AfPub already – or only after export in a PDF?
I can't see that change here if I copy your last object in your .afpub twice, neither within AfPub nor in this PDF:

test ombre _ot & copied last object twice.pdf
But I see that the shadow appears brighter from top to bottom per object.
That reminds me to an issue with k-only that ended up in a bug with different color spaces/ color profiles between an .afpub and a placed .afdesign resource. -
and, BigStef, please use a font which I will have for sure. "Helvetica Neue LT Std" might be a bit unnecessary complex by its name alone to be compatible
, or convert it to curves. – or simply just one shape shall show a shadow sure.
-
Hm. – How do you see my shadow black definitions in my .afpub?
"tenacity"? (had to look up in the dictionary) I'd rather say I try to prevent to get mad by AfPublisher's insane color & swatches handling: with K-only shadows it seems one needs to save a swatch in an extra document palette to make sure for that specific K-only to get moved with the document. How sick!
So, create a document palette, then there a 100 K swatch and assign that to your 3 objects and send it again.
Or compare my .afpub + screenshots with your view on and export from it ... -
@ BigStef, you have assigned 4-c black for all three objects:

Since the image wasn't embedded I placed a rectangle. As PDF/X-3 it looks like this with K set to off:

"Multiply" and the balack was just added to the background...
Works the same in AfPub, but there it "just" needs specific (old) PDF version for export. <– THAT is the bug.

I assume different settings for "the last". – Can you upload your document?

No, not at all. What makes you think so?

Old Bruce, it's okay. I am aware of all what you said but it doesn't change things. A K-only shadow does work under 2 conditions: 1.) Multiply and 2.) PDF/X-1a or -3.
Yes, in my last shadow screenshot above the black and the shadow is missing because it was unchecked in Acrobat to show what happens underneath. -
No such "every last object" rule for me
,
I always get the same results depending on my settings only: Shadow in K-only needs multiply and PDF/X1a or X-3. – Here with K unselected:
Maybe my test .afpub will help for your tests: v408 shadow 1-6.afpub / v408 shadow 1-6.pdf
p.s: "only the last item has ..." :: I got confused occasionally by the effects options window UI, needed to double check my settings because they don't get all visible on page but on export only. Especially black shadow color is tricky to detect because to assign the color one needs to open a pop-up color panel which in its swatches section makes it not quite easy to distinguish similar swatches because of their fixed tiny size, the missing global and spot markers and the lack of names ...

@Jon P, I just noticed (haven't tried before) the same crash occurrence in AfDesigner, also with a new, empty document:
File: New > Save > Save As... > Replace > Crash
I can open this new .afdesign in AfDesigner and – still without any content in the file – repeat the crash with Save As > Replace.Affinity Designer_2019-06-27-195117_mbp1.crash
Ohne Titel.afdesign -
Yes, a shadow with K only is still an issue in AfPub.
But it appears to work for me with X/1-a and X-3.
Though it is not overprinting, at least it doesn't change the content underneath:

why don't you ask the ones who use it what features are vital......
It's simply not that simple to respect all desires as "vital" in one application at once.
It can be even hard to implement one single feature resulting of market research...:

not sure I can crop it without losing anything.
How would I crop it correctly?
"correctly cropping" could mean: use the crop tool / (or, if in AfPublisher, use an image frame with "lock child" activated)
"crop without losing anything" could mean: stretch the image in one direction to achieve the wanted aspect ratio. (and give the impression/imagination only that nothing is lost)

Tricky indeed. Because Affinity seems to treat all Black as RGB – even imported objects with K only – you apparently need to export as PDF/X-1a to really get K-only, with the disadvantage of rasterizing vector layers which have a color mode effect or adjustment assigned.
The workaround requests to split black and color objects to be able to handle them different, since the colored layers sit between black layers. The goal is, finally to place the colored layer (contains brown only) on top of the rest (k-only) with color mode multiply.
I see mainly two ways to go:
A. Via PDF/X-1a, rasterized:
1. Select all colored objects (brown) > group them > move them as top layer > set them to invisble
2.* Export as PDF/X-1a * (see below)
3. Import it
4. Set the colored layers to visible > color mode multiply
5. Export all together as PDF/X-3 or 1aB. Keeping vectors, no rasterizing:
__ Black-only:
1. Create a color swatch with 0 0 0 100 K.
2. Select all TEXT objects > group them on top > assign the 100 K fill > set them to invisible for step 3
3. Select ALL objects –> deselect those which have NO black stroke assigned (the 5 browns + some whites + the thick gray stroke)
4. Assign the K-only swatch as stroke color
__ Color (brown):
5. Clean up the white filled and the colored (brown) shapes with the geometry tool to have brown objects not covered with white objects
6. Select all colored objects > group them
7. Select the thick grey stroke (background) and convert it to a shape/curve.
8. Subtract a copy of the colored objects with geometry tool from this grey shape
9. Set the layer of colored objects to color mode "Multiply"
10. ExportAttached a result sample for the way A., with 1 fault:
I haven't done step A.1., therefore the brown objects can not be set to "multiply" but to "darken" only, so they show these grayish strokes on them.
K-only then color_ot_comp X3.pdf* EDIT: Oh, in A. I forgot between 1 and 2 to assign either Black and White adjustment before export as X/1-a – or simply do export as grayscale with B&W profile !!
-
You can avoid that (unlogical) knock-out (not overprinting) of Black if you use blend mode "Multiply" and export as PDF/X1a or X-3.
What is "product" mode? -
I assume your print shop does not want any marks but only the pages with bleed. Perhaps it can be a functional workaround to completely give up Affinities bleed feature for now and to calculate it in the document page size instead. As you have started already:
On 6/21/2019 at 1:08 AM, deannak said:(2) So... I tried subtracting the bleed size and giving it a document of 5.875 x 9", since it's adding the extra 0.125" bleed anyway. Now I get the correct page dimensions, but the inside bleed area still gets filled with bleed from color images.
Unfortunately, since there are no "global" layers in AfPublisher yet, you can not simply place a white strip on a master page over everything. But you can use it, and, as a workaround, move this master page layer on each relevant spread to the top level position.
-
No, not active. Even then it would be strange that the 90 pages mother document shrinks smaller than its 3 pages child.
-
Honestly I still do not understand the goal in practice and am curious to see.
Reminds me of this different thread, where + inner bleed for facing pages was requested:
However, I think if inner bleed = 0 is general possible to layout than it should be able to export with this setting, too.
That it works when I print instead of exporting appears to me definitely strange (to avoid the ugly word buggy). -
In a 90 pages document, 35 MB, I deleted all pages except 3. There are only 6 rectangles and 3 text frames left. No content added.
I did "Save As..." with a new name but the file size remains quite the same: shrinks from 35 to 33 MB.Any idea how to fix this page-reduced .afpub's file size?
Even more strange: I did a Save As to the 90 pages .afpub and it shrunk to 31 MB. – Whereas the page-reduced, nearly empty .afpub refuses to shrink below 33 MB with any more "Save As...".
-
Just a note: With the text cursor you can hover over the frame edges to get a double-arrow cursor. That enables you to move the text frame without leaving the text tool.
-
If you want to have all colors moved to K only then you can assign a "Black and White" adjustment. (keeps contrast)
If you want to eliminate/ignore CMY but have only K left then you can use the button "K only" in the tool bar. (reduces contrast) -
Definitely not practical here but maybe any later moment: the checkbox "No break" in Character panel.
With interesting position if centered or right aligned. And text selection/correction is hard to handle if it's in another column.

If this flexibility results in faults, for instance ...
... different CMYK values in "Swatches Panel" versus "Color Panel" for the predefined HSL swatches of the palette "Colors"
... different color spaces & values for the predefined swatches of the palette "Greys" in "Swatches Panel" versus "Color Panel": K-only versus 4-c
... different vivid color appearance between an object's CMYK fill versus the same as swatch in "Swatches Panel"
... output/export of K-only as 4-c
... converting K-only into 4-c when handling different color profiles between document and resource
then I really rather prefer bit less flexibility.
And more usability.
