1. The key is, to place no kind of transparency on the text but using any vector shape as mask instead. A picture frame works as mask and cuts off the area around its image inside. A picture frame with rounded corners cuts off the transparency in your logo.png and limits the rectangular shape by its rounded vector shape. This way no transparency of the .png is placed on the text but cut off by the masking frame. The shadow within your .tif is not that easy but works in this case because the shadow of the circled image does not touch the text. To avoid transparency here you separate the 'coin' and its shadow by a mask (as you did already) for the image but ... ... limit the mask shape to the 'coin' circle and ... add the shadow by an object underneath. Therefore you create ... a second circle in size of the 'coin' and ... limit its upper edge with a rectangular mask, so it does not touch the text and ... apply the shadow to this new object: sample text under graphics _ot.afpub
2. Oh, I thought jpg compression was the difference between yours and Werners test, because he wrote: >> Works fine for me, I only had "Allow JPEG Compression" deactivated << So since Werner and me got the S shape as expected I don't see a need for you to test again, thanks. I am rather interested how patrick87 came to the very bad result in the pdf screenshot in the 1st post. Possibly a linked but missing resource? Or a rasterized object before export + export in low resolution? ...
3. On my macBook keyboard the < is just 1 character key without shift (placed between shift and y) whereas > is "shift <": ... I guess there is no such 1 standard for keyboard labels, especially not for the characters with modifier keys besides shift. For instance Layer > Arrange > Move to front is named in the menu as: shift command ] whereas I have to type shift option command 6 Even this can be wrong, look at this strange Austrian keyboard labels https://www.dsi-keyboards.com/shop/accessories/language-labels/a-languages/austrian-german-keyboard-labels/ Last but not least: did you experience yet what this Affinity shortcut option does if selected?:
4. @mac_heibu, your AfPub result looks different to my test. –> Same "S", 400 pt, Arial bold + image inside exported as PDF/X-3 plus with JPG-quality 10% only: The S-edges aren't blurry, jaggy or influenced by jpg compression in 900% PDF view: v408_2 letter S & image inside X-3 _jpg-10.pdf
5. I have doubts there is a bug on export resolution of 3d and emboss effects. As far I read you did not tell us what resolutions and what zoom factors you show in your screenshots above. The effects 3D and Emboss export to me in a PDF/X-3 as expected. Try it with the attached PDF: even in 400% zoom the PDF still looks much less jaggy than your screenshot. (whereas 400% zoom on screen corresponds about to a resolution of 300 dpi in print (4x 72 dpi = 288 dpi)). It looks blurry (not jaggy) of cause because both effects create soft edges in purpose. v408_2 effect resolution X-3.pdf
6. I experience on a Mac lost panels about once a week, depending on the amount of switching between apps or personas. It seems to be caused by these factors: – using two monitors [– using macOS Spaces (~ different "desktops" for various apps)] [– switching Affinity "Personas"] [– using "Separate Mode"] Only the "two monitors" needs to be true to confuse panel settings, the 3 others seem to make it "just" happen more often or to make it worse. Some of the disappeared panels seem to be outside of the screens area and can called back on screen by toggling them on/off: then I see them jumping in from the right edge. When it happens on Persona switch then it happens only when I come back to the initial persona but not when I went to the other persona before. When I use "Separate Mode" even the Main Toolbar gets lost. Unfortunately it moves below the edge of the lower of the two screens and can not get back by toggling on/off – but I can make it appear using "Customize Toolbar...": it jumps up and I need to alter a setting to make it stay at its place after closing its options window. Then I can move it back to its position on the upper, external, monitor. When using "Separate Mode" any new opened document does not appear at its large free space on the external monitor but always behind all panels on the smaller laptop screen below (which has the system menu bar). Then most often "Toogle UI" does not react and I need to manually move the panels aside to get access to the document window to move it at its position on the other monitor. If I have already a document opened on the 2nd screen and open another document then "Merge All Windows" makes the existing window jump to the newly opened and makes both hidden behind the panels (instead moving the new to the existing). Unfortunately there is no ability yet to save window and panel positions. When I close the app in cases of such confusions it reopens with the confused appearance, so the auto-save of window settings does not help in such cases. That makes me think their definitely is a bug in window and panel management – at least when using two monitors.
7. In the panel "Table Formats" the UI appears a bit weird: – The option "Show Names" is useless because the names are covered by the icons. – With selected "Show Names" the icons seem to become vertically stretched and take more vertically space this way. – In large size the icons seem slightly to overlap. ... ... ...
8. There are two types of text frames: those created with Frame Text Tool and those with Artistic Text Tool. I noticed for use with text frame tool I can preselect colors and font weight but not font face or size. A preselected font face appears to work only for artistic text tool objects – whereas in table cells I can't use the artistic text tool. To make a font style used for future text frames or table cells I need to define it once in an object and choose "Synchronize Defaults...". This way the style gets used until you change the Defaults or use "Revert Defaults" to go back to the saved version of defaults.
9. Instead of a circle you may use of cause any shape as a vector mask or clipping path, even the form of a person. Yes, there are fundamental differences between various PDF versions. On of them is the support of transparency, another for instance are specific color spaces.
10. @ Jens, the kind of coincidental recognition slightly confuses me, because earlier you wrote, if YOU curve the text than the PDF got a bit smaller: Tried that too, in my case the PDF was 0,2 MB smaller. The fact that in your trial the PDF file size did NOT increase when YOU CURVED its text would imho mean that your large PDF also has curved text. One day later you reacted positive to another hint that curved text might be a reason for the large PDF file size. As if the reason was obvious and known already, before you uploaded the two pdfs yesterday. Possibly it is an issue only of specific PDF option settings (which, indeed are not finally fixed yet in AfPub) or a specific combination which makes the export fail this way by curving text unwanted. What do you get today if you export as PDF version 1.7. - ? (as you did in December for your successfully smaller PDF .)
11. It works for me with 5-8 only if I choose "Book" instead of "Booklet". (which now let me understand what makes the difference: a book bound with thread stitching is made of several booklets so to say)
12. Your layer "Background" appears to be kaput. 1. I can not select the object in main window (but the unlocked layer without response on page view) 2. It is a group, it can get ungrouped but seems to contain no shape, just a fill. 2. It has a Fill color assigned which is named to be White (no color) but looks blueish. Just kick that layer off and drag a new rectangle with the wanted fill color.
13. Double-click on the graphic or its layer > go to its new opened window (named "Embedded") > Menu "File" > "Document Setup..." > "Colour" ... Actually it should not be necessary to use 1 color space only if Affinity would handle color spaces correctly.
14. Reminds me of this ancient clip, a merge of Apple's "Switch" campaign + text posted at Adobe forum ID 2.x in early 21st-century. ellen_id2_snd_sor3.mp4 "http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?50@@.1de5a9de/0 #1-3 55/220/50 -- Since installing Jaguar, I experienced some issues with InDesign 2.01. After using ID for an hour or so, the cursor always remains a black arrow, no matter what tool is selected, or even if a file is being placed. Also, the Undo option is grayed out. The only way to get this back to normal is quit InDesign. I do this about 40 times a day now. None of this happened when working in 10.1.5. I never realized how many times I hit Apple-Zett, until this started happening. This is ID2 on Jaguar. I'm da un-do King! - Does anyone else have this problems?"
15. Might different PDF version presets create the confusion?: In default PDF/X-3 preset the export option "include layers" is off and greyed-out: PDF print preset (pdf 1.7): PDF/X-3 preset: @JSR, another subject I run into with your file: Although you haven't mentioned yet: the red and blue shapes might not export with colors as expected. embedded: red 10 / 100 / 100 / 0 blue 100 / 0 / 0 / 0 exported: red 2 / 95 / 83 / 5 blue 93 / 0 / 1 / 0 I assume it is related to different color spaces of embedded (US web coated v2) versus final .afdesign (ECI coated v2 300%). In my opinion this is a bug in color management of Affinity.
16. Color sliders in Swatches Panel do pop-up whenever you select either right-click > "Edit Fill..." or simply double-click on a swatch icon. Their color space remains the same – regardless of document and swatch color space – until you manually change it. Here's another sample of the issue of different slider value versions between Swatches versus Colour Panel: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/89971-swatches-vs-color-panel-–-different-results-1-is-wrong/
17. The file's "mother"-.afpub had once for a short test many weeks ago "Save History..." activated. After this test the document got saved several times, both with "Save" and "Save As...". On the day, when pages got deleted and saved as a different .afpub, the history had not been active.
18. Another way to get rid of unwanted style properties is using the button "Revert defaults" in main tool bar first. Depending what you have defined there as Default it clears the unexpected, frame properties included.
19. Indeed strange. If I open several files step by step than their tabs are, of cause, arranged in the order of my open action. But if I select 3 files (jpgs, each ca. 50 KB) in macOS finder and drag them onto the AfPub app icon then their tab order is neither by name, nor by save date nor by size but varies with several trials with the same files.
20. Furthermore: CMYK values differ between Swatches Panel sliders versus Colour Panel sliders: Slider values in the Colour Panel depend on the documents color space and result in different output on PDF export – whereas their values in Swatches Panel sliders remain identical and not altered or adapted with different documents color spaces. That behavior makes it difficult to know what color gets used indeed – especially if swatches get mixed with colors set in the Colour Panel only but without using them as swatches. For instance: 1) Default palette "Colours" in Swatches Panel: HSL 106 / 90 / 50 CMYK 73 / 0 / 95 / 0 2) "Colours Panel" and PDF export: 2a) Document color space: iso coated v2 .icc: CMYK 82 / 0 / 100 / 0 2b) Document color space: euroscale coated: CMYK 100 / 0 / 100 / 0 –> differences for cyan: 73 > 82 > 100
21. In case you want to export from AfPub as a grayscale PDF: You can do it by simply select the according greyscale color space and profile export options.
22. Indeed, Stephen_H, that makes it more weird that swatches aren't copied together with objects. (...as it does by the way for text frames and their saved text styles) Furthermore: if I want to assign such a "Global Color" by using the Color Picker Tool, then the color look gets assigned but not its global property. Also when I select "Add Color to Swatch" then only the look becomes a swatch but its global property is ignored and lost again.
23. @Jon, (to avoid space-wasting), this .afpub is already in this thread (with no reaction of stokerg): https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/91257-publisher-slow-saves/&do=findComment&comment=486518 https://forum.affinity.serif.com/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=98572
24. When I copy an object which has a swatch assigned into a different .afpub document then I do miss its swatch in the other document and need to generate it there once more. That is especially disturbing for global swatches, because I am not able to make them appear in an application palette. And it becomes more disturbing if I copy/paste more than one object, for instance an illustration like a diagram, a map or a technical drawing where every color represents a specific meaning. Then it is useless time consuming that I need to regenerate the swatches in every document using these objects.
25. Not to me: I am able to alter the values of a predefined swatch but it appears not simultaneously and therefore unexpected and a bit confusing: 1. A color which I change in the Swatches Panel does not simultaneously change neither in the Colours Panel nor in a selected object while dragging the sliders in the Swatches Panel but only after I closed the sliders pop-up window in Swatches Panel. 2. The name of the swatch does not change.
