JPEG quality issues?
thomaso replied to nitro912gr's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
As far I know in V2 the default setting for JPG quality in PDF export presets was changed from 98 to 85%. (which does not mean a change in the JPG export algorithm for 85%) A comparison with 100% is not really helpful. Can you upload a ZIP containing two JPG files exported with bilinear 85% before & after the assumed change? Note, since your screenshots show PDF: if you save images after their export from Affinity in a PDF then they may get recompressed and their quality may get reduced. By the way, I also get (expected) subtle artefacts around text in V1 with 85%: -
Does this mean that your thread is not about rasterizing during export but rather about the Affinity document before an export? ... I haven't tried @NotMyFault's workflow but if you don't use PDF I wonder why the various available non-destructive methods for blurring don't work for … as long you keep them non-destructive (e.g. as separate layer or layer effect)? When does this become rasterized or lose editability in your Affinity workflow?
-
Do I misunderstand your result or @languidcorpse's desire ? – To me both your PDF examples appear to get rasterized, for instance the vector version: Whereas to me a soft edged / feathered shape behind text appears to be possible without rasterization with a gradient and a colour with 0% opacity (optionally + blend mode multiply): v1105 blurred NO raster.afpub v1105 blurred NO raster x-4.pdf

1: click the button: (a recent V2 version has an option in the Transform Panel for permanent reset of a rotated bounding box back to un-rotated) 2: Use its Context Toolbar options for numerical setting – or select a shape Tool to access the red handles for dragging: (difference: ring starts with hole) 3: Press the space key on your keyboard (or select the View/Pan/Hand Tool). To fully hide and "diadsle (…) this layer at all" uncheck it in the Layers Panel. 4: More Basics.

Instead of using the AD scale feature mentioned in the video above you could create the document size in the required dimension. But note, the PDF file format has a limit of 5 metres / 200 inches maximum. Therefore it is useful to create the document in scale with an accordingly increased document resolution. A document size in scale 1:10 for layout creation is easy to handle, then the exported PDF will get printed with 1000% (not 100%) to achieve the wanted size. Accordingly the resolution gets scaled, too: For a print with e.g. 200 dpi the document resolution gets set to 2000 dpi … then a print in 1000% would reduce the final print resolution to the wanted 200 dpi. For instance, if the printed vinyl sheet should have a lengths of 5 metres you create a document with 0,5 metres = 50 cm and set all dimensions in the layout accordingly, a car of 4 metres would be placed as photo in the layout with 40 cm … etc. Also you need to add size in the layout for the curved parts of the car because those will not be visible in a pure side/front/top view photo or in manufacturers dimension drawings. If you want to wrap the car (not apply adhesive foil) it can be useful to choose a stretchable fabric, this will reduce the need for a layout with perfectly precise dimensions. (waterproof required?)

I probably did not understand fully what you mean It is less a question of practical use but rather my curiosity to understand what causes drop caps to get moved to the right with a reduced leading. While without drop caps all lines overlap with a small leading, for drop caps it seems there is a threshold that prevents them from overlapping and moves them instead. For instance below: 72% leading overlaps drop caps – 71% moves them: … or with different fonts and the initial setup of v/h-sized drop cap chars: In comparison, a Baseline Shift applied to drop caps causes a vertical move as expected -> the resulting gap below appears more logical: -
global colors and palettes
thomaso replied to stefan_'s topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Yes, as @Hangman mentioned before: If the object 'delivering' the colour would be a linked resource then all instances of it in all documents may get updated to display the modified colour. Nevertheless, the documents using this resource might not update automatically but may need to get opened to get a modified resource updated. In Affinity a linked resource updates only the top hierarchy of the linked resource, to get resources on more levels updated it requires to update them individually by opening these documents. For instance if layout A and B use C as colour resource and B would be a resource of A then it would need to update C in B + B in A to make all instances of C appear updated in A. -
Hi @Gully Foyle, welcome to the Affinity Forums! What app and kind of store items do you want to install – and what indicates the failing installations to you? It shouldn't matter where on your drive you save the downloaded items, but it does matter where you install them. Assets are installed via the Assets Panel, brushes via the Brushes Panel (you can install both vector and pixel brushes in any persona with a Brushes Panel, but after installation they will only appear in their associated personas). Alternatively to download store items before installing them you can optionally use the "My Account" feature for auto-installation from inside the app. https://affinity.help/designer2/English.lproj/pages/GetStarted/registerAndSync.html Also, if you install a V2 app and run it for the first time while V1 is still installed, the V2 app should offer to inherit custom settings from V1 and content that you installed in V1. Alternatively, you may trigger the “migration prompt” at a later time, as shown by Carl123:

make global swatch default
thomaso replied to dandyse's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Thank you! and sorry that I did not notice the related, already existing info in this thread above. – Indeed, I must have used this option (I have two .propcol files in ~/Library/Application Support/Affinity Publisher/DefaultPalette/) and then forgotten it. It appears that the various possible "default palettes" (one for each colour space) may refer to the same palette containing global & spot colours if wanted … while palettes anyway don't require to be separated by colour spaces but may contain swatches of all spaces, gradients included. So, apart from the fact that such a custom "Default Palette" appears for future documents only, it is a way to get a palette of global & spot colours available as document palette for every new document. It seems a later update of changes done to a 'Default Palette' is possible simply by reassigning the palette as default via the menu once again to make it appear accordingly in all related documents. Although this doesn't enable swatches that work globally application-wide but at least it enables us to achieve a permanent, default document palette for all future documents, e.g. for easier access to certain corporate colours of a project or client. Also this may reduce a limitation of objects stored in the Assets Panel which appear to be stored with global/spot colours but without transferring their swatches if placed in a document. Unfortunately, even the existence of an asset spot colour as swatch in a palette doesn't highlight this swatch as being used by an asset until object + swatch get reconnected. -
make global swatch default
thomaso replied to dandyse's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Global Colours are document specific and cannot be added to an Application Palette. If I create in APub V1 a new document from the Affinity presets in "New…" (I don't use 'template' documents yet) then the new document opens to me with a document palette 'by default'. I don't know how I did achieve this as I also don't know why only new RGB documents (preset "Print" or "Photo") open with a palette (named "global") that contains spot colours, while new CMYK documents (preset "Press Ready") open with a palette (named "1_CMYK") without any global or spot colour. global palette permanent.m4v I assume this default document palettes result from tests/experiments I did months or years ago with several palette ex-/imports with the goals to try to import a custom spot colour palette as application palette (it did import but with failing/misleading swatch properties) and also to sort my default palettes in the menu, which let me rename > export > delete > re-import all palettes. [ As far I remember not the palette name but rather the order of import / creation defines the palette order within the menu. – I just tried to reproduce / create another 'global' default document palette but can't get it to work with simple export + import and also don't know if a second would be possible at all. ] I can't tell what finally caused the appearance of this document palettes in new documents. It appears the swatches marked as 'global' in this 'default' palette do indeed work 'global' within a document as usual (means locally global, not globally global). Also its spot colours seem to export correctly in an X-4 PDF, their overprint setting included. So it appears that default 'document' palettes with 'global' swatches are technically possible already in Affinity V1 without the use of template documents while "just" an accordingly clear interface seems to be missing. -
What is the point of leading override?
thomaso replied to mogsie's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Only very few of all text style properties are displayed in the Context Toolbar, a large majority is not shown there but in the panels or the 'Edit Text Style' window only, and some of them can even get influenced also in the Text Frame panel (for instance "Indent" vs. "Insets" / "Baseline Shift" vs. "Vertical Position" / "Baseline Grid" vs. "Baseline Grid"). What may seem confusing is on the other hand a useful flexibility that allows us to combine certain settings with others, while allowing us to influence/achieve a specific hierarchy for certain settings with desired dependencies between styles or style properties. Actually, for many designs it is possible to use "Leading Override" only and ignore "paragraph leading" without running into visual issues. Its consequence is not necessarily a "horrible look" (while that can also happen with many accidental settings and without the use of "Leading Override"). Nevertheless a preferred, proper use of paragraph leading with an only selective, specific use of character options like "Leading Override" or "Baseline Shift" gives more flexibility and reliability, not only in the Context Toolbar's info. For style creation it may be easier to use the two panels (char. / par.) only since they seem to allow the best visual overview with their various collapsible sub-sections whereas style properties in the "Edit Text Style" dialog window (via the Text Style panel) may be harder to control and give less overview. This window is more useful to edit just a certain property of a saved style or to create a new style based on another, existing saved style. -
What is the point of leading override?
thomaso replied to mogsie's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
It gets applied to characters, not lines ... similar to text wrap, drop shadow, bleed size etc. which get applied to other objects than they affect. -

What is the point of leading override?
thomaso replied to mogsie's topic in Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Its use for specific situations. One of the most simple is a character style inside a paragraph that varies in font size, for instance to visually emphasize certain words like product or company names or other keywords. While the paragraph leading is a paragraph property the leading override is a character property. Accordingly this two leading options are in different interface areas on purpose. The Affinity interface may need a specific cursor position within a text to get the style properties at that position displayed in the interface. If you select an object that contains various values for a certain property then Affinity can't show them all at a time. Text style deviations get indicated by a '+' symbol in the Context Toolbar and the Text Styles Panel. For instance: the orange character style has a font size of 18 pt while the paragraph is 12 pt with a leading of 120% = 14,4 pt. Note that the larger characters do auto-cause a larger leading in this case if/while/although leading override is NOT activated (= set to "Auto" = its value is displayed in round brackets): If for that larger, orange characters the leading override gets activated = changed from "Auto" to the value of the paragraph leading (= 14,4 pt) then the leading override does maintain the leading for the entire paragraph and the deviating setting is indicated in the UI by a value with NO round brackets and in the Text Styles Panel. You should avoid using the leading override … unless you want to use it on purpose for specific situations. As mentioned already, all this character style options in "Position and Transform" should be used/modified selectively only for certain reasons. It may help to collapse this panel section via the triangle to its left to prevent you from accidental changes: -

What/where did you try? Did you choose to add a network printer by specifying its IP address? This option wants you first to type a name for your printer, then it will allow you to choose a specific printer driver file from your disk. >> Add a network printer by specifying its IP address – (…) use: Display the appropriate software for the printer. If you don’t see software for your printer, choose Select Software, then select your printer in the Printer Software list. If the Printer Software list doesn’t include your printer, try downloading and installing the printer software (also called a printer driver) from the printer manufacturer. You can also try choosing generic postscript or PCL printer software from the pop-up menu depending on your type of printer. << https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/mh14004/mac

If in V1 a character style which is saved in the Text Style panel gets a property changed while it is applied for drop caps in text frame's paragraphs then it gets its instances in various text frames updated only if the paragraph style is also a saved style in the Text Styles panel. Is this the expected behaviour for an assigned Drop Caps style? ... and the same in V2? -

Not sure if its great (or if I understand you correctly). It appears to vary with small leading. For instance top: 80%, bottom: 70%. Apart from the fact that such a low leading is rather rarely used (especially with drop caps): Do you have an idea what exactly triggers the right shift/offset of the drop caps when overlapping in the bottom example? It seems also above with leading 80% the drop caps + body are partially overlapping but just a little less. -

Sorry I didn't notice the special desire in my previous post. – It appears to work and for regular use with upscaling the DropCap character style by its horizontal + vertical scaling value as wanted. This will scale the initial character accordingly, regardless of the font size of the paragraph style … and without the need for additional special characters. -
Your product keys appear to refer to the purchased Windows versions. If you did not purchase AD V1 / APh V1 for Mac you don't have product keys for the downloaded Mac versions. Since you downloaded the Trial versions this downloads work independently of the existence of product keys and as trials for a limited period only. @Dan C, is an option to download V1 Trial versions the expected behaviour in the Serif Store nowadays … although V1 non-Trail can not get purchased any more?
