  1. A small update to my original question. I now received the diagonal dimensions... I'm now trying to recreate the shape, but I'm still stumbling in Designer. Is there a way to snap to any place on a circle ? I'll try to embed a video. I've first drawn the base line (horizontal), then I've drawn a vertical line, and I've positioned a cricle that represents my first diagonal. Moved the rotation point on the vertical line, and now I'm trying to rotate the vertical so it snaps to the diagonal... but nothing is snapping. I've tried a few different settings in the snap tool, and would have thought that "snap to object geometry" would be perfect for this... but my circle is not snapping at all... The diagonals are 3027,4 and 3142,7 Sorry to bark on with this, but I'm trying to get a better understanding of how Designer works... designersnapcircle.mov
  2. That's a bit scary... it is actually a Stonehenge exhibition that I'm working on... The "technical" drawings I received where off by 4mm to the dimensions they displayed, and I'm assured that the dimensions are correct, so I took the drawing that was sent to me and adjusted for the 4mm difference. I'm pretty confident everything will turn out right, it's just not the way I like to work... I'd rather be exact, hence why I would have liked to recreate the shape in Designer...
  3. Well, that's the problem... the lightboxes are being built as we speak in Italy and will be shipped directly to the US, and I am in Belgium where I have a local printer that will print the fabric. So it's a global effort Not to mention the deadlines. I'm already a week late....
  4. Hi gdenby, I appreciate the effort, and I agree that it is an odd question to ask. I've already settled on the notion that this is something that a design illustration app should not be required to do. Posting this question here was more out of frustration that I wasn't even able to easily measure and verify the existing drawing in the first place (drawing rectangles and rotating them to get a dimension = not very elegant). And my next mission was to try and recreate the shape... and the rest is what you see in this thread. fwiw : A = 1815,7mm B = 2458,3mm C = 1909,2mm D = 2461,9mm For my problem, I have solved it by making the design for the fabric a few mm smaller on each side, so that I am sure there is enough tension when stretching and inserting the fabric into the lightboxes.
  5. Confusing it is. In my language we also speak of Trapezium. I mentioned trapezoid because that is the name that is used inside Designer, and because it sounds a bit cooler (I'm also a fan of sci-fi movies and such... :-) Anyway, I did try the suggestions John has offered, but the problem still remains when trying fit all the sides and corners together. There is no problem making sides of the correct length, but rotating each side until all 4 corners are correct is impossible without a diagonal. Not to mention that is fiddly... I do think it could be done in software though, to have a dialog box, or an expanded transform tool where you can type in lengths of all sides and Designer (or a plugin) computes the resulting shape. "Artificial Intelligence" sort of speak, as is the buzzword these days...
  6. Yes indeed, I have 4 lengths. Nothing more. I had thought about circles, but I'd at least need one diagonal, which I don't have. I think what I'm trying to do is impossible without more data. In practice what is happening, I am given a technical drawing of a lightbox for which I need to design the fabric that goes in front. Upon measuring (with the fiddly rectangles and rotation acrobatics in designer, please serif give us an elegant way to measure stuff...) I have noticed that the technical drawing is not accurate. I'm told that the dimensions that are displayed on the drawing are exact though, so I'm trying to recreate the shape, but without at least one diagonal I think I can't...
  7. I'm not sure if irregular trapezoid is the correct english term, but in any case, I am desperatly trying to create a shape that has 4 sides, of which none are the same length and no side is parallel. I know the exact length of each side, but I can't seem to create the shape in Designer. I'm currently fiddling with drawing rectangles as measurement tools, but this is impossible to get correct. (does a measure tool exist, I know it has been requested by many users, but I can't seem to find any means of measuring aside from drawing rectangles ?). I can't create diagonal lines with exact lengths. I can create horizontal or vertical lines and use the transform tool for exact lengths, but since I don't know the required rotation, I'm at a loss. It would be great if exact dimensions where displayed when draging nodes.... If anybody has any tips how I would create this in Designer ? I'm not using 1.7 currently, does 1.7 have anything that could help ?
  8. I find myself with multiple PSD documents, each over 100 layers, that I need to export every layer to jpg files. The export persona seems like the ideal solution. However, creating slices (with the button "create slice") makes the slice as big as the layer actually is, even the bits that are clipped by the canvas. i.e. a layer is often larger than the canvas. But I need to respect the canvas framing... If there would be a simple option to create slices, not only auto-sized, but optionally canvas-sized, this would make my day. Alternatively, if there would exist a destructive crop action (= delete all the pixels that are clipped by the canvas), this would also achieve the same result. As it is now, I need to spend a whole day exporting every layer by hand....while this could be done in under a minute if any of the above would exist. If it does exist, please be kind and point me to the right workflow. My search came up empty.
  9. I also need overprint stroke. My printer needs this to cut shapes after my file is printed. The stroke determines the shape of the final print, but it does not work when overprint stroke is not selected in the pdf....
  10. Many thanks for this, I just tried it and this is perfect !!! But it would still be nice if the crop tool was enhanced a little for one off images... but indeed, for many layers, your solution is perfect.
  11. I'd like to have this for both designer and photo. Currently I have a document with lots of layers, I need to export each layer as a seperate cropped object. The export persona is too cumbersome for this, but the slice tool does almost work exactly as I'd like the crop tool to work. Ideally, when selecting the crop tool, there would be an extra button in the toolbar "bounding box" that automatically sizes the crop to the bounding box of the selected object on screen. Even more elegant would be an extra pixel offset, so that when cropping to the bounding box, and offset of a few pixels could be set to leave a little extra space around the object. Such an option would greatly enhance my workflow. As it is now, I need to go through hundreds of objects and manually size the crop each... and... every.. time... which is mighty time consuming.
  12. My Panoramas are also flipped after stitching. I'm using a Leica Q, and I'm positive that Affinity Photo is misinterpreting the exif info. Affinity Photo also misinterprets my orientation when I open the single raw files by itself. I have already mentioned this a few times. It's easy to rotate afterwards, but it would be nice to have correct rotation from the start.
  13. I often need to work with documents that have an unhealthy amount of layers. A fast way to search a certain layer by it's name would really help. Now I need to review the complete layer list over and over again, sometimes missing the layer, starting over etc... This is actually the only feature I miss from Photoshop. I know there is a feature where you can click objects and have the layer selected, but that does not help me because most layers I need to find are not visible.
  14. Hi MEB, I'm uploading an image right now. The camera is a Leica Q. When I load a portrait file from my Fuji or Nikon, they appear correctly, so this is indeed probably only an exif issue.
  15. I'm sure I've seen this mentioned before, but I just can't find it... so I'm reporting it again. When I open a RAW file that was taken in portrait mode, it opens as a landscape photo inside the develop module. This still happens with this beta. Sorry if this is duplicate, but the find didn't bring up this issue.
  16. I'm in the same boat. Still using CS6, only Indesign. Photoshop and Illustrator have been thrashed. I was looking forward to the Publisher beta, but alas. About the focus to iOS, I hope they can prove me wrong, I really do, but I can't think of using any kind of iPad for serious work. Even if it has "Pro" printed on the back. How do I connect a Thunderbolt Raid to an iPad ? I have 32 TB of data split between 4 Raid systems. How would I ever access that data and use it with an iPad ? Even if Serif can pull off a kick-ass application on iOS, they would still be severely crippled by the consumer oriented filesystem. If it's purely a marketing effort, to get themselves in the spotlight, I agree, this makes sense.
  17. Hi MEB, is there a reason why Publisher has been pushed back by a year ? It has always been hinted that a beta would be released by the end of 2015 (not the end of 2016) and a final release in the first half of 2016 (not 2017). I'm just curious as Publisher is the one app I am desperatly waiting for.
  18. Another small problem I am creating a document and seem to have problems with a font, however, in the app store version (1.3.5) the font renders correctly and does not show a problem. In beta 1.3.5.11 I see a question mark in front of the font, and the font won't render In app store 1.3.5 there is no question mark in front of the front and the font renders correctly. I have also tried other applications to see if the font is corrupt, but this problem is only in the latest beta.
  19. Probably a small bug... I am creating an ad to send to the printer and upon PDF export I go into the "More" settings. I have chosen all my options and created a preset. When I click ok to go out of the "More" settings, I see that the preset field on top of the Export dialog is still blank. My preset isn't listed either. Only when I am in the "More" page, I see my preset. Designer also just crashed when I exported my PDF... not sure why, I was typing this post and Designer was in the background, idle. (ps : I just wanted to add that this release has effectively thrown both Indesign and Acrobat into my thrash, many, MANY thanks for that :-)
  20. Hi MEB, I have posted this before as a feature request and as a bug, but file extensions are not working, no matter what the preference is set at. I searched the forum and it seems other people have reported this as well. Since you, or the devs, are not seeing this behaviour, something must be different with our systems, and it would be great if this got sorted before Affinity Photo was released. I just tested with Photo RC1, and the behaviour is still the same. I have unchecked 'always hide extension', so clearly I want to see my extensions, but not in 'save as...' and not in 'export' do I ever get to see extensions. Please let me know what to try next to get this to work.
  21. I found this thread when searching for printing options, and I want to add my vote for more robust printing features. I do lot's of large format printing on a HP z3100 44" printer, and I have currently finished a job entirely in Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo, yet I find myself incapable of printing it. I'm now exporting everything to tiff & pdf to open it in other applications just to print it. The standard OS X print dialog is sufficient for pages, numbers, office type applications, but it really falls short for any designer related print work. For years I have used Photoshop, Lightroom and Acrobat (for vector work) to print as they are the gold standard. All the info requested above is right on the mark, so no need for me to repeat.
  22. Hi TonyB, I'd love to, but have no idea how. As I said, the files I usually work with are much bigger than the one I sent you (see screenshot). Do you have a fast FTP, or other cloud service where I can upload 5GB files ? (wetransfer is limited to 2GB)
  23. Hi TonyB, thanks for looking into this. I did some further troubleshooting. I went in, and deleted my layers one by one, and each time did an export, just to see if there was something wrong with those layers. The export behaved the same way each time... so it seems nothing is wrong with the artwork on these layers. I finally managed to get something out of Designer with the export persona. I'm not really sure what I did, but exporting the "pre-defined" page slice as a jpg resulted in a complete jpg. But with the export persona, I could not save a CMYK jpg. So I finally went into photoshop (sigh) and converted the rgb file to cmyk. So there is a difference between the persona export and the file menu export. I also noticed that jpg export has no progress bar, where the other filetypes do. FWIW, I mostly work with files much bigger than this. The current design is mostly vector, but often there is a lot of bitmap work involved. My photoshop psb files are gigantic and slow, but never do I have funky output.
