Patchwork got a reaction from stitchadoodle in WIP - Design for a Quilt.
    Hello all!

Since I've only just yesterday downloaded the Affinity Designer trial, and just this morning joined the forum, I figured I'd go ahead and just make this an introduction as well as showing my first work in progress using this program.   :)

I cut my teeth on vector art with That Other Software version 8, just by fiddling through what amounted to a Dummies guide to it.  I realized I loved doing line work using vector art and the pen tool because it could become so perfect and beautiful with practice!  My career was in the commercial arts industry, so I was lucky to have the chance to incorporate vector design into my work on a near daily basis.  Now I'm just a hobbyist who sought out this program to be able to create patterns for quilting.  Using a vector program is perfect for that, since you need to design quilts with your background shapes blocked out first, and then build on top of them, whether with stitching, notions or applique.

This image is part of a very large quilt I am designing.  It's an image of my dad, and me as a little girl, standing in front of the Baha'i House in the Chicago area, which we had visited once together.  The image I'm posting here is what I managed to get done today.  As much as I'm dying to add gradients and get fancy with it as though it were an illustration, I have to keep in mind that I'm going to need to make sure the shapes are uncluttered and easy to see and separate, so that I can eventually print out each piece as a blueprint to build by hand later.  Since I won't be relying on line art, I have to make sure each shape makes a nice silhouette that'll be a quick and easy read (working on that!).  Best I can hope for for some line definition will be some fat stitching in another color here and there, and I've managed to begin adding some of that to this image before stopping for the night.

I'm having a little trouble adjusting to some of the rules of the pen tool thus far, but otherwise things have been pretty smooth sailing!  I'm open to learning these new things, so I'm happy to continue on getting used to how the program works.  I expect I'll definitely be buying a copy once my trial runs out.  Hope you like it so far!  There's still much tweaking and building to be done on it.

Ronnie, thank you!!  These are great!  I'm using them right now, and they work like a charm!  :)

Oh yeah I believe you, this program just feels right, and ought to give a good punch to the soft underbelly of the reigning (not for much longer, I hope!) tyrant some of us have been slaves to for far too long.  I'm so glad a program that is able to stand up to it is finally available for Mac!  Thanks again for taking the time to create and upload these brushes!!  It's so light on my somewhat older laptop, too, which is great.

***I also don't work for Affinity Designer or represent it in any way - Just so happy and relieved to find a program that's better than what I've had access to thus far!

Awww, say it ain't so, MEB!!!  Most of my way of working with vector drawings is to build line art from shapes and then fill them in!  I am fiercely devoted to promoting Affinity Designer, but having to draw colored shapes behind the line work takes so much time, and it would be so convenient if you had something similar to the live paint bucket!  I spent the afternoon drawing this fan art thing, and want to have it ready for Halloween, but oh man, the work ahead of me where drawing the color shapes comes in!!!...I think it might be wine o'clock (if not WHINE o'clock!)!   ;)

I really hope you can come up with a way to do this some day soon!  Still and all - I persevere!   :)

I would kill to have this feature right now.

I'm working on a heavy load for the next 3 weeks, with an art director who insists on changing up colors constantly.  It's agonizing and wastes so much time to have to go in by hand and pick each shape to change the colors on, especially on highly detailed, multi-character sheets.

This, along with a paint bucket for closed shapes would make projects go by so much more quickly!

I hope you might be able to add these features soon!!

Reset the application (hold Ctrl while starting) and see if that fixes it.

I'm afraid that's not going to happen this year. However, the current Customer Beta does support global/linked colours, which should help, especially if you are able to create your characters using linked colours in the first place. The Customer Beta is available from here.

    Hi Patchwork,

If you're able to just send the file to support@seriflabs.com I'm sure we can look at it and tell you how to achieve what you're looking for, then delete the file again afterwards :)  It's really difficult from the screenshots to imagine what problems you're facing - it's hard to visualise how everything interacts without actually trying it...

    Thanks,
    Matt

You must select the grey circle (the wheel) and the white shape and do a subtract boolean operation. If you created the outline of the inner circle of the wheel with a black circle, you will also have to select it and a duplicate of the white shape and perform a subtract boolean operation. Without the file to check however, the steps i outlined above may not give the result you're expecting.

So IMO an i7 is not a must have - though I have them...and I´ve bought a used MBP so I could afford the best specs

His issue is not just the app to run. That happens fine on his current old machine. His problem is to run fine when job gets intensive. So i7 it should be for him ;)

I'd be interested in purchasing your old MBP if you don't already have plans for it. I need a good backup laptop and I have no issues running any affinity apps on my older 2008 MBP with 4gigs of memory and a ssd drive.

Apart from i7, i5 I'd wait for the next iteration of Intel processors which will arrive in the next monts.

There will probably also be an 21inch 4K iMac.

I'm using mid 2012 (Retina) MacBook Pro with 16gb and 750 gb flash drive.  Its fast!

When at home this is hooked up to Apple's 27" thunderbolt retina screen.

No performance issues at all. I just got Affinity Photo too!

How about a Mac mini with a third-party monitor that is better than an Apple one but for a fraction of the price? Should be sufficient for the Affinity applications.

Well I will make it reallyyyy eassyyy for you :)

Just get the most expensive config you can find. That one will work best with affinity apps and more ;)

If budget is a concern however then anything with an I7 + SSD will do fine.

You'll always get beach balls st some time.
But the apps sre very effective so it's also to say that you'll probably will get less beach balls than with any other software.

So it just depends on your budget.

I'd just advice you to go for 16GB RAM (you can also change this yourself after buying an iMac).
And I'd choose a SSD or fusion drive. As a photographer I need more space so I choosed a fusion drive.

Today is the day!  I will be buying this fantastic program once I can get out to the conbini and hoard up some iTunes cards!  :D
I introduced myself months ago, but haven't been around for a while.  I'm back, and I have not abandoned you, Affinity Designer developers!  Looking forward to jumping back into the fray within just a few hours now!  Got lots of ideas, and now I can finally follow through on them.

Oh, so there IS an intro thread!  :)

I kind of introduced myself on the Show Your Work thread, so I'll just make this short.  I worked in animation and fashion logo and design in Los Angeles for many years, but now I'm just a crafter and hobbyist living in Japan.  I'm also an Adobe defector.  Don't like the idea of having to rent their software at all, so I'm actively looking for ways to never have to use them again.  Started using Adobe software at Illustrator 7 and Photoshop 4.  For pixels nowadays, I've been using Clip Studio Paint until I find something I like better.  Tried using Inkscape a few times and hated it, and I found out about this program through doing a frustrated search on best vector illustration programs for Mac.  I'm currently using the trial version of the program to design a quilt, but look forward to eventually buying the whole thing!

Please don't stop supporting older Macs!  I'm currently running on a 2009 MacBookPro, and don't know when I'll be able to upgrade.

Really loving the program so far!

There's isn't a specify key for that. Pressing space (panning) without moving the mouse/trackpad may help for now as it hides the controls.
