I pre-ordered today! Thanks so much for the work. I hope the last issues are ironed out with the last few betas and am very much looking forward to using it to replace indesign!

YES, Thank you and the team SO MUCH for the amazing work on this!! I am so excited for the release, and waffling on whether I want the app store version or a better discount which clearly speaks to the value of your software that both are invaluable regardless of the beta appreciation discount.
Additionally, as a long time self publisher that may not be your typical "Pro User" that is pumping out daily publications I sincerely want to thank you for the work here. The "consumer" desktop pub apps out there are not really viable for much beyond brochures, etc, and my reliance on InDesign was sorely in need of a feasible non subscription replacement. You responded very quickly to early concerns around margins, bleed, etc etc at the beginning of the beta, making Affinity Publisher suitable for my needs quite some time ago...and now it has evolved to be an even bigger powerhouse of functionality over the course of the beta.
The great work you and your team have done is nothing short of amazing. I will be buying this day one on the app store or pre-ordering through the affinity store once I can quit being indecisive. Really looking forward to the launch, as well as the continued future of Publisher in terms of updates and an iPad app!
    thank you again!!

Incredible work … and price! Is pre-ordered and I will dare it to create a 88 page programme with Publisher.
    Thank you very much!

Multi-line composing is a nice to have, for increased productivity, but it‘s hardly a deal-breaker. It‘s perfectly possible to manually finesse Publisher‘s text setting as it is now (I even got it to do a nice job of ‘cogent‘ range left, although it was a bit laborious). I’m sure, in time, Affinity will address this if there is enough interest. Anchored tables and graphics would seem to be much more of a priority at this stage.

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the incorporation into Designer of some of the Publisher developments — particularly the typographic enhancements (like hanging punctuation) and the Publisher bleed enhancements. I love the continuity between these two applications, something that InDesign and Illustrator have never had. You‘re doing a great job, guys!

There is no reason why one can‘t create individual chapter files in Publisher and then merge them together as PDFs (even Preview will let you do this). Indesign does automatic pagination across book files, but it‘s perfectly possible to use Section Manager in Publisher to manually start the pagination at the right page in each chapter. It‘s a bit more fiddly, but perfectly do-able.

I know you've only been out a couple of hours with the BETA, but where's the coffee making ability? I need this straight away. When is it coming? Today, tomorrow, next week. This is very important to me. Tell me quickly. Time is of the essence.
When coffee making version is released, there's more features I'd like to see (in no particular order):
Cleaning Ironing Self drive AI Virtual Reality etc Thank you!

jamessouttar reacted to MichaelG in Affinity Publisher is not a copy of InDesign - no massive fail!
I also think that calling Publisher a "massive fail" at this point is being both unfair and unrealistic. I don't know where Serif is pitching the Affinity suite, and whether they intend to rival Adobe products eventually. But even if that is the goal, Rome wasn't built in a day.
I think when we look at the Affinity suite overall, and Publisher in particular, we should remember that:
Adobe Illustrator first shipped in 1988. Therefore at the time of writing it has had three decades of development effort with a big engineering team and a big budget. Photoshop first shipped in 1990, so again almost three decades of development, and probably an even bigger budget. And they have Thomas Knoll! InDesign shipped in 2000, so we have 18 years of development on this product. All these products have a huge user community, and they have been providing feedback for decades.
So are the Adobe products more refined and more capable? Of course they are, and it has taken Adobe 20 or 30 years to get there. I have worked in software development (also for decades) and I understand how long these things take. Hats off to Serif for even starting this project. Its always easier not to.
What we are talking about with Affinity Publisher is a beta of a V1 product. So yes, it is going to have bugs and shortcomings compared to a product that has been shipping for 18 years. Even if the development team want to eventually build something to rival InDesign or Quark Xpress, that isn't going to happen with V1, or V2, or probably not V3. If they tried to do that it would never ship anything, and Serif wouldn't sell anything and they would be out of business. This is a work in progress, as is all software. Nothing is ever finished.
The same applies with Affinity Photo and Designer. They are "finished" products (i.e. they are shipping as V1.*). But to expect them to be a feature for feature matchup for their Adobe counterparts at this stage just isn't going to happen. I for one would love to see an "Image Trace" feature in Affinity Designer to match AI, and also better "Content Aware" technologies in Affinity Photo to match PS. One day perhaps, but give them time. With any software product from any manufacturer, V1 is always about "time to market". You have to establish a revenue stream to fund further development. They are trying to build a suite of products. I'm sure they know we need a file browser to stand up to Adobe Bridge, and a RAW processor to match Lightroom. But one step at a time.
It has taken InDesign 18 years to get where it is today, and Publisher will also mature over time I'm sure. For what its worth from my first look at Publisher I am encouraged. But its a beta, and that's why we are all here, to contribute to the development effort. Yes I have posted some items and made comparisons with InDesign. but that's because I'm used to that product. I don't expect a feature for feature matchup on day one.
    Thanks,
    Mike.

jamessouttar reacted to h_d in Soft Returns
    Hi @jamessouttar
I think you're getting this because Affinity's default shortcut for a soft return on a Mac is ctrl-return, not shift-return:

Typing shift-return gives me an ordinary paragraph end, rather than just a line end (aka 'soft return').
But you can change this in Preferences:

    Cheers,

A big well done to the team! Publisher is a really superb piece of work, with features way in advance of what I imagined you would be able to deliver in a first release (I remember the launch version of InDesign, and how far it was from Quark Xpress — Publisher, on the other hand, seems almost no distance away from InDesign). And I love the way you’ve implemented some of the features, too, with the panache we‘ve come to expect from Affinity.

I can imagine some pretty long faces in San Jose this morning. Just please don‘t let Adobe buy you out because you’re killing their revenue stream!
