I am not very fond of vectors, but had to try it out to test Designer, that will (probably) be one of my main design programs from now on. Still, I will keep to bitmaps most of the time. Here is my very first, simple, but still, all vector drawn, illustration.

    Hi,
Just an idea, but would it make sense for staff to create a sticky thread, which basically acts as a list of all resources shared by members?
The list could display each contributing member's name, followed by the list of their resources, or alternatively, listed by type of resource (Macros / Brushes) etc.

This would prevent having to scroll down through potentially hundreds of separate threads.

The users could still post their specific threads here, but the top thread could be made sticky - listing them all.
All the users / creators would need to do would be to request that their resource gets added to the list.

If each member who thinks this is a good idea "likes" this post, it will then be easier for staff to see if the community likes this idea or not (without having to post lots of separate +1 posts.)
    Just an idea :)

    Thanks.

I'd like to provide a little Christmas present to the community, some textures to use in Affinity Designer.

I think I've spent a little time over 23 years creating seamless tiling textures. I gave them away when I was a host on a previous website, I thought this wonderful program and crowd might like them, too. I'd discovered early on that this is the way to get a bitmap fill inside a shape, and AD doesn't come with an assortment.

I've never sold a collection commercially, I'm not sure if I need to...this is just a fun hobby for me, to get a texture to seamlessly tile, and to make the texture unique. I have some wood and rusty metal textures but heck, you can find these for free just about everywhere! :)

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/opcma06qu19kunc/Textures.zip?dl=0

Let me know if posting this media is welcome or not. If it's a hit, I will post another texture pack after the Holidays. I have to design my Christmas card for inkjet printing now, no rest for the weary!

    My Best,

    Hi all,

This is my first post here.
I work in the motion graphics industry creating frames for commercials, film and tv. I use 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Blender3d, the Adobe suite and lately I've added Affinity.
I've been enjoying Affinity Designer since the beta release, which I've been happy to purchase right after it became available.
Since I also like compositing and photography a lot, I've started playing with Affinity Photo as well.
I wanted to say thanks for these new programs. They are both very well designed and packed already with a lot of features and capable tools. Considered they are relatively new, I'm confident I can expect even more exciting improvement in the future.
I have a personal wish list which I will post in the appropriate section.
For now, I wanted to share some of the early works I did with both Designer and Photo.

    Hope you will enjoy it.

    Best,
    Piero

This time,  I got a very beautiful Mandarin Duck female,
she too is alone, without her mate, and playing hard to

Apparently landed some hours before, she was trying
to hide under anything that offered shelter. In this case,
she was staying too close to the cache for me to get a
good horizontal, flat angle to shoot her.

doeboy reacted to paolo.limoncelli in DAUB LiquidInk Tools and Macros
    Hi Folks!

Here I am with a freebie.
This little project starts from the need to have a tool that mimics ink tension and viscosity.
In order to do this, and make it easy to use in AffinityPhoto I needed macros, and finally these are there!
You need AP 1.5.x in order to make it work!

    Download the package here

    How this combo works

The technique relies on Adjustment Curves and some special tools designed to keep anything non destructive.
Tools are simple stupid brushes that together with custom ramps deliver a viscosity effect on crossing lines, resulting in a credible feathering effect.
This happens only if used together with the layer stack generated by included macros.

To use them import both Macros (from Library Studio) and Tools available in the package, create a new document and click one of the effects (Ink and Wet Ink) form the Library Studio.
AP will create a layer stack composed of the adjustment, a fill layer (needed to make this adjustment work) and a pixel layer which is where you want to paint.

These tools are designed to work best for black inking.
If you want you can play with other colours too, just be aware of the clipped results you will obtain.
You can always re-colour your layer with further adjustments.

    Hope you'll enjoy!

After a few trials and errors, I have the 3rd proof back from the printers. Ohhh My Strawberry Monkey started a little while back as single comic strips but felt it wasn't the right direction. So its turned into a Children's book (under 5's) it's aimed at pre-schoolers.

There is so much more to the story and I'm sure I'll tell it one day. I wrote and put the book together in Affinity Designer and yes I'm looking forward to publisher, which no doubt would've helped but it worked.

Anyway, the next step is to send a copy to a few publishers and I'm also considering self-publishing.

There will also be a few copies available, so you lucky people get to experience the first, (hopefully) in a series of many.

So if you've got young kids and would like a copy leave a comment...Thinking of you Matt P and Chris B...

(Is this also the first Children's book to come out of Designer?)

I have been following the workbook tutorial for The Whittler - not completed, there are other demands on my time - but I've enjoyed going through the processes, especially using the vector and raster brushes to create texture on the tree. I completed the robot with simple linear gradients for now, the rest can follow another day. This is my interim take on The Whittler and, whilst it is capable of greater finesse in the future, I am happy with it at this stage.

    Status: Beta Release
    Purpose: Fixes, improvements
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Photo
    Mac App Store: Not Submitted
    Download: 1.5 Beta 11 Here

This is a beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity in which you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity Photo 1.5 cannot be opened in Photo 1.4 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.5 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.4 version.

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

It's also worth noting that this beta is completely file-format compatible with the recently released Affinity Designer 1.5.3 in the Mac App Store - although the above disclaimer still applies!

    Improvements & Fixes

    - New preferences options (under Colour) for handling of OpenEXR (separate alpha, post-divide alpha, perturb zero alpha).
    - Layered OpenEXR files were coming in upside down (layer-wise). Fixed.
    - OpenEXR import should default to a transparent background.
    - Fixed big problems when trying to use any brush-based tool on more than one layer at once.
    - Fixed clone tool hiding the source marker under while dragging.
    - Information panel now shows alpha values.
    - Fixed issues when importing TIFF with malformed DPI tag.
    - Improved X3F focus-pixel removal for more modern cameras.
    - General Tone Mapping stability improvements.
    - Respect tone curve preference when doing HDR Merge, Focus Merge.
    - Develop now properly respects user-chosen profile defaults.
    - Focus and HDR merge now respects user-chosen profile defaults.
    - Fixed further crash issues with the Font dropdown.
    - Improvements to numerous filter which use Gaussian samplers.
    - Fixed more issues with badly formed TIFF being loaded as RAW (sigh).
    - Fixed importing of PSD gradient map adjustments.
    - Alt-Click on the “Add mask” button in the layers panel to add an empty mask.
    - Disabled buttons in Macro panel when no document is loaded.
    - Fixed LZW decompression bugs when importing PDF.
    - Fixed Lighting filter in CMYK.
    - Fixed spurious history items when using freehand selection tool.
    - Fixed magnetic selection bugs.
    - Fixed redraw issues with freehand selection tool.
    - Fixed weird 32bit bounding issues with Gaussian samplers.
    - Improved panorama alignment.
    - Numerous PSD import / export improvements.
    - Gradient tool now works on 32bit masks.
    - Show bad equations in red when using Equations filter (incomplete).
    - Avoid crashes when “Resize Pixel Art Document” is used on massive documents.
    - Improved macro panel icons.
    - Ctrl-Alt drag in brush tools should be limited to 4096, not 1024.
    - Fixed issues where Live Filter panel would not reflect opacity, blend mode correctly.
    - The “red button” should never auto-commit filters.
    - Fixed more white scroll bar bugs in macOS Sierra.
    - OpenEXR can now be exported from non-32bit documents.
    - Fixed terrible “Save with History” problems when user has deleted from a layer using a pixel selection (sorry!).
    - Fixed crash in Apply Image when using equations in LAB format.
    - Macro recorder can now record “Resize Document”.
    - Numerous minor cosmetic improvements.
    - Numerous other small stability improvements.

    - Improved localisations.
    - Improved help.

Unfortunately, the “Link Layers” feature has missed the cut - as has the “Pause Macro” feature. Apologies for this - we will try to get them into a beta as soon as possible after Photo 1.5 has shipped.

Photo will go to RC at the start of next week. We are still working on a number of bugs / improvements until then.

Thanks again for taking the time to use this beta!

doeboy reacted to evtonic3 in Affinity Brushes - A Good explanation
I am struggling with the just being able to ink in vector with Designer. I have viewed all available videos here and on YouTube. And its still clear as mud. Although I enjoy the raster brushes in pixel persona, I am just after good vector inking that I can expand the strokes at the end of my work. Here are my issues with the app:

    1. I don't think it should be called a vector brush unless the strokes made with it will be true vector and therefore can be expanded. Using the vector brush in Draw persona and choosing a textured image brush from the Texture category should allow you to expand the stroke but it does not, why? Because this is really a png file that a "vector" brush is used to draw that stroke. This brush that creates these sorts of image based strokes should be called an Image or Pixel stroke brush. A differentiation in these two types of brushed would clear confusion rather than just having a one brush fits all types of brushes styles.

    2. The Vector Brush tool and the Pencil tool share too many characteristics when it comes to what each tool can create and what makes it different than the other. The way it is now I can draw the same stroke with either the pencil tool or the vector brush tool and apply a basic, textured, or image brush and either one can have pressure applied so what's the difference?

    3. The only way I can create a predefined tapered basic vector stroke and not have to apply the stroke style after the line has been drawn is with the mouse only. I cannot use my tablet to create this same stroke with my stylus. To reference what I am referring to open Autodesk Graphic, their brushes keep their taper as they are drawn automatically, or you can choose pressure to create your own. I like the auto taper strokes like they have, would like to be able to this in AD.

    4. Where do I begin my inking process, all the tools seem to be here, but when you try to draw, the tools do not respond initially the way we expect them to unless you turn something on or off.

    5. There are really no in-depth tutorial discussing the possibilities in the painting tools, I have found 2 in Designer's tutorials.

    6. Why can't we create our own taper brushes with its profile pressure settings be saved locally inside the edit brushes window? Would be great to create a taper brush drag and drop into the brush library and DONE. SAVED and READY to go- no more dealing with the pressure profile graph.

I know  I am missing some things and it may sound like I'm rambling about this but as I said, I just want to ink in vector without many setting to have to adjust. Point #6 would solve probably most of my issues, especially when just I want to draw and go.
