jonfuller1004 got a reaction from Ruby78 in Grids and guides 960 and 1200
Hi all I design websites frequently and use bootstrap as my framework for coding. I use a 12 column layout for website and was wondering if there was a way to create grids that work for each art board like I can in photoshop yet or has this still not happened. I notice there is a guide creator however it is not very easy to use to make this sort of grid with gutters and margins etc. ?

Hopefully this is a simple fix.
Whenever I draw using the vector brush (only one tested so far and pencil) using the iMac Magic Mouse the lines are smooth as expected but when I draw with the Wacom they are clearly not smooth why

Ok so today I got my Wacom Tablet, loving it !

thought I would try sketching on Affinity.

I sketched using the pencil tool, with pressure etc.

however when I try to fill certain areas, because the lines are all sketches it does not fill the gap.

I tried combining the relevant areas, so combining all the lines that make up the hair etc. however  I am not having much luck.

any one got any tutorials or hints ?

Yes, you can place vector shapes behind the line work for colouring and use Layer clipping (dragging a vector object over another in the Layers panel) to help shading specific areas inside the parent shape.

    Hi Serif team,

I am currently in a middle of a transition from Sketch to Affinity Design. As much as I like Sketch, AD is quite superior and feels like a real proffesional tool. I mostly design apps and websites therefore my needs comes from UI design. Still there are some things I lack in Affinity Design and prevents me from using it as a main design tool.

    1) Instant measuring distances - in Sketch I can always select any object, hold ALT and hover over any object and I instantly get distances from those objects in pixels. It also works for distances between layers, guides and borders. It works like magic and I really have trouble designing without it as it’s very addictive once you start using it. I know I can draw rectangles but it’s annoing compared to that. Please consider it.

    2) duplicating objects with options - there is no easy way to rotate copies of an object in Affinity Designer. Say I have to put 50 copies of a rectangle with rounded edgest around a circle to create a tyre. Or a custom cog I can’t create with the shape preset. Or just simple "create 50 copies of this within selected area".

    3) Snapping to full pixels - Snapping to half pixels is usually useless for me in UI design (it results in blurry icons on mobile devices), I need to force snapping to full pixels.

    4) Mirrored direction handles – couldn’t find any way to move the direction handles of a nod in a mirrored way. Maybe I am missing something or is this option missing?

    5) Eyedropper tool behavior - Whn using eyedropper tool first I have to drag it and once I am done I have to tap the small circle with the selected color to apply it. Why this unnecessary step? In Sketch I can instantly use the color when releasing the cursor. This behavior only slows me down.

    6) Object style presets and smart objects - self-explainetory, it makes designing a UI with repeating elements a breeze. Any plans for that?

    7) App for previews – you probably need to implement artboards first but it would be nice to preview designs instantly on iOS and/or Android devices. At least you can integrate Skala preview? Sketch app is killer for that.

Thank you for considering all this. Besides that AD is perfect app for design and looking forward to use it more. Sketch has so many bugs, limitations and it’s very slow compared to Affinity Designer.

    Mike

Patchwork this is stunning and now I completley understand the need for the Raster brushes that you wanted, I have not yet had time to try them, but my use would be stiches on buttons, headers and logos for web design. I really love what you have done here and look forward to seeing more of your work!

    Hello all!

Since I've only just yesterday downloaded the Affinity Designer trial, and just this morning joined the forum, I figured I'd go ahead and just make this an introduction as well as showing my first work in progress using this program.   :)

I cut my teeth on vector art with That Other Software version 8, just by fiddling through what amounted to a Dummies guide to it.  I realized I loved doing line work using vector art and the pen tool because it could become so perfect and beautiful with practice!  My career was in the commercial arts industry, so I was lucky to have the chance to incorporate vector design into my work on a near daily basis.  Now I'm just a hobbyist who sought out this program to be able to create patterns for quilting.  Using a vector program is perfect for that, since you need to design quilts with your background shapes blocked out first, and then build on top of them, whether with stitching, notions or applique.

This image is part of a very large quilt I am designing.  It's an image of my dad, and me as a little girl, standing in front of the Baha'i House in the Chicago area, which we had visited once together.  The image I'm posting here is what I managed to get done today.  As much as I'm dying to add gradients and get fancy with it as though it were an illustration, I have to keep in mind that I'm going to need to make sure the shapes are uncluttered and easy to see and separate, so that I can eventually print out each piece as a blueprint to build by hand later.  Since I won't be relying on line art, I have to make sure each shape makes a nice silhouette that'll be a quick and easy read (working on that!).  Best I can hope for for some line definition will be some fat stitching in another color here and there, and I've managed to begin adding some of that to this image before stopping for the night.

I'm having a little trouble adjusting to some of the rules of the pen tool thus far, but otherwise things have been pretty smooth sailing!  I'm open to learning these new things, so I'm happy to continue on getting used to how the program works.  I expect I'll definitely be buying a copy once my trial runs out.  Hope you like it so far!  There's still much tweaking and building to be done on it.

Yeah I am with you Patchwork something like this is going to persuade me either way, I am hoping to get the programme for xmas as i needed an idea to give the missus; I am also on the trial and find the programe really great except a few features which I feel it needs (mainly this) and would like a rough timeline before we purchase.

can we do what you can with in illustrator, using shape and pen tool to do a vector design then drag this into the brush pallet or click create new brush or something similar?
