Brush Selection in Layers Mask

in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)

I am following the exposure merging video, but when I get to the mask selection part, my paint brush dialog doesn;t have the hardness adjustment or realtime preview. In fact when I go to paint the mask to reveal the underlying image, nothing is happening. Thank you
