Petar Petrenko got a reaction from Dave Harris in ADwin: text should flow around an object
Corel is trying to be all-in-one app, but Affinity is one-by-one. So, this feature is more logical for Publisher than for Designer.

Magic Wand can be precize only if there is big difference between neighboor colors. Otherwise, you will have to make additional refinements to get what you want.

Petar Petrenko got a reaction from Wiredframe in Locking guides?
Is there an option in AD to lock guides? I can not find any option in menus even in palettes. Am I missing something?
If not, can it be considered as feature request and solved with a guides layer?

    Hi Petar,
you are not allone. I tried your file. I added again a new layer and inserted several diverse simple elements (rectangle, circle, text). Each is automatical inserted into the locked layer.
This is probably a major bug.

    Hi Petar_MK, Kobu,
    Thanks for the report.
Issue logged/passed to the development team.

Excluding the feathering brush (which is time saving, but not so organic in this example) you could handle this technique right now using pressure profiles, keeping all in pure vectors.

I think the vector Lino-cut brushes in this TutsPlus tutorial look wonderful: http://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/create-a-set-of-art-brushes-you-can-use-to-make-a-linocut-style-illustration--cms-21964

I can't wait to try this tut using Affinity Designer, the minute after it's possible to make custom vector brushes.

    Hi theste,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums.
The brushes are still in development. Not all features are implemented yet. Just give us some time and we will get there :)

I agree with Hokusai. The pasteboard is essential in my opinion. I store many things on the pasteboard including printing instructions and notes to myself. And it should be separated from the  canvas by some line of demarcation in the event you want to have a white background. The Clip to Canvas feature would be nice to have with the pasteboard (to make all of the pasteboard items invisible). It doesn't work for me in its current incarnation though. It can make items to disappear, but only because it sets their fill to None. It also tends to be greyed out in the View > View Mode menu, so maybe I have something else going on...

I would also like to have a way to designate non-printing objects. I use this capability frequently in Illustrator. For instance to show where the window is on an envelope I am designing. I want to see the window on the canvas while designing, but not have it print when the file goes to a printer.

Great job with Affinity Designer so far. Looking forward to continued improvements.

Finding Adobe very arrogant, especially to its loyal customers, I jumped to Serif and delighted to discover Affinity Designer which is really Cool.

This might sound so petty, but for me would make a huge difference: visible clipboard. When you push an item off the main screen, you can no longer see it. Can you make the clipboard visible.

Also we have many 'actions' saved for photoshop, could you code to make them compatible for Affinity photo?
    thanks

I would like to see in Affinity Designer the possibility to mix text and graphic elements such as polygons in the same text box. See an example in this attachment applied to a text surrounding a circle.

    Hi guys,

I have recently switched my whole research group from using AI to using Affinity Designer. However, the thing that every single user heavily complained about, and that really limits the utility of AffinityDesigner for us, is the lack of an option to select a key or reference object that stays put during alignment and distribution operations.

This is very crucial for the preparation of scientific data plots where one really cannot have the data points shifting around when aligning them to their labels. It would also be very helpful for preparing multi-paneled figure etc.

Also, while at it, a 'select same color/stroke/fill/...' feature would be great, and the eyedropper tool could use some attention (eg. for text and vector objects)

Please make these available, and I will promise, that there will be a landslide of scientists moving away from their current overpriced rental software to using Affinity Designer

    Thanks

    Lars

I'm always awed by the narrow-minded replys that I keep getting with my ideas

But fortunately I'm not the only one finding that this idea can be very handy.

Other solution would be adding a polyline tool like the one Corel Draw has. But working simply as Petar_MK described would be enough.

    Thanks

Yes, it would be very nice to have LIVE flood fill tool, to fill the area where 2 (or more) objects intersect and automatically refill the area if one object is repositioned.

    I intentionally left it off.

I felt that if one wanted variable opacity in paint that blend modes would suffice or they could just use the layer opacity setting. I think that would be more useful than setting it per color (for painting explicitly).

The pencil tool is for drawing. Period. And you should be able to constrain it to straight horizontal or vertical lines.

Petar Petrenko got a reaction from Bauke in Suggestion about Publisher: Send behind Master Page objects
QuarkXPress and InDesign have different approach to Master Page Objects. QXP allow you to edit/delete them on working pages as regular objects, while you can not do it in ID because they are locked (you must first unlock them with CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + L only on selected pages).

So, how it is connected with the title of the topic?

When you like to color the background and try to "send to back" the colored rectangle on working page you can do it in QXP without any problems -- the Master Page Objects are vissible, and you can't see them in ID. So, if you plan to do it ID way (which I don't preffer), then please add a 5th option "Send behind Master Page Objects" in Arrange menu.

I find this thread an interesting question. According to the documents (I'm not a Mac owner so I haven't seen much of Affinity apps yet) there one common file format, one shared undo history, and different "personas" that look a lot like you could do some operations of the other discipline. Apparently there must be a lot of shared code in the program to be able to do all that. Why not just make one application out of it? But I'll have to see how it looks when all parts are available.

Related question: I've asked myself the same about office suites. You have limited text formatting in spreadsheet apps, and limited table support in word processors. Why not combine Word, Excel and PowerPoint (or their equivalents in your favourite office suite) into one single program called "Office" or so? Would make many tasks easier. Since Office 2010+ have the concept of context-sensitive ribbons (previously probably toolbars), comparable to context-sensitive toolbars in AD, all functionality should be there when it applies but not overload the UI any other time. Many buttons could easily be shared, too.

I think it would have been great if affinity designer and photo were one application, as this would bring in all the features you want in a graphic design and image manipulation software.
