Petar Petrenko reacted to DavidMac in Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.5 - RC1)
My congratulations to all of you and your team! I have never, ever seen a software developed so much in co-operation with it's users. The result speaks for itself!
Would there were more software developers think and act the way you do.
Well done ......... :) :) :)

Hey guys, what's going on here? In 100+ posts on this topic you are talking about some discount. How big discount do you expect -- 5$, 10$...? Maybe you even want Serif to pay to you and give you free serial? Shame on you. Are you short 10$ to the end of the month? Give me your bank account I'll pay to you.
Instead of being grateful you have such a wonderful software for no money you are yelling here like old women.
If you are angry, just forget Serif and stay with Adobe. They like somebody like you.

Petar Petrenko reacted to R C-R in [Designer/Win] Some explanation about PDF handling
But the artboards are neither aligned edge to edge nor in a 6 row by 1 column layout, so as Matt said, the dialog shows the document's size, the width of which spans the left edge of page 1 to the right edge of page 4. Likewise, the height spans from the top of the first row to the bottom of the second one.
The artboard size can be seen in the Transform panel when it is selected with the Move tool active, the same as for any other item in the Layer's panel.
Likewise, each image's size & dpi can be seen at the top left of the Context toolbar when it is selected with the Move tool active.

Sorry, things have just been crazy busy since the release of Designer on Windows and we're struggling to respond to everyone...
Yes, I don't see why we couldn't tell the user what type of image they have placed :) The landscape/portrait orientation issue is more difficult - we'd need to see the original PDF in order to find out what's happening. Perhaps there's a tag we're not reading that doesn't get set by other applications, but InDesign is setting it? (It's actually quite interesting that the PDF thinks it is 6 portrait pages - rather than one landscape page... are you certain that what's in the PDF is what you think it is?)

Designer, and other Affinity apps, will become a killer software when they start to draw automatically what is in our mind. We will have to wait until version 2.0!

But they are totally confused.
Instead of colaborating, their teams compete each other. How else you can explain that same feature(s) works in three different ways into PS, AI and ID?

The crazy thing is we actually really did want to make sure our long standing Serif customers – as well as those people who helped us so much with the beta period – got a special deal. And that is what we did both with a discount and £50 of free extras.
The problem was as well as working on the app, we have also been developing a new store system and database (hence the requirement for setting up a new account, etc.) We were hoping to have some form of voucher functionality or similar in before launch, but unfortunately we ran out of time. Fundamentally right now we have no way to offer different customers different deals.
We did only include mention of some of the bonuses (the brush packs) in the Serif customer and beta customer email (you’ll see it was never mentioned on our blog post or any press we received). But yes it’s true that anyone who does buy at the moment does in fact end up being able to get them and so gets the same deal.
We felt ok with that as we knew while everyone would in effect get the same deal, the vast majority of people ordering in the first week would be those customers we wanted to give the special offer to. Better that then not giving any offer, or an offer not as good, so we ran with that decision.
As it has happened I can tell you that 86% of customers who have ordered so so far are either customers who were part of the beta test programme or customers who previously owned a latest version Plus range product. So yes it could be said that 14% of customers have ended up with a better deal than they would have done if we could have in some way locked the offer down to only Plus range and beta customers.
Clearly we should have been more open about this, but at the same time I don't think it makes us the devil as we have genuinely tried to do the best thing we can and give a fantastic offer.
We have got an incredibly fantastic team of people here, and we’re a small company. Some comments seem to suggest the belief is we are some big corporation. The part of the company involved in development, testing, documentation, marketing, graphic design and web development is 38 people in total. That’s it – and we’re (including me) all sat in the same room in a unit in Wilford Industrial estate in Nottingham. Adobe probably have 5,000 employees fulfilling the same functions.
We do just genuinely want to write fantastic apps, and have as many people using them as we can by offering them for a reasonable price. You will not find a team anywhere who are as committed, as focused, who takes so much pride in their work as what we have here. For many of us this is an all consuming, huge part of our lives and over recent months the hours which have been going into this (as well as our Mac updates, progress with iPad, etc.) has been phenomenal. I say this to explain why perhaps at times we can get a bit defensive, because we literally put everything we’ve got into it.
Anyway, please take this as as apology that I realise we have got our communication wrong and also to put the blame for that entirely on me as it was me, after all, who wrote the email. I’ll make sure we sort out some additional freebies or something similar to give exclusively to our latest version Plus range users in the future once we have a way to do it.
Thanks,
Ash

Petar Petrenko reacted to BONES in Feedback From a Xara User
I'm not sure if you care at all but I thought you might like some feedback from a long time user of Xara Designer Pro, who also uses Adobe CC eight hours a day at work. To be fair, I have not spent a lot of time with Affinity Designer but a few things are immediately apparent to me.
The UI is very Adobe-like and I just can't see that as a good thing. Some things are just too fiddly. e.g. Creating a transparency gradient. There is plenty of room in the context toolbar to show all the options but you have chosen to hide it all in a tiny dialog window that drops-down. Sure, it feels familiar but in an "oh, no!" kind of way. Same with fill and stroke options.
Too many tools with restricted functionality. If I want to create a complex shape, I need to use the pen or pencil tool to create the shape but if I want to fine-tune it, I need to change to the node tool. In Xara I can just select the Node tool and do it all.
Saving colours either doesn't work or is much harder than it needs to be. I created a dark blue-grey and wanted to save it for later re-use. The help says there is an "Add Color To Swatch" option in the drop-down but there is not. I tried some of the other options but it always just saved a black swatch. I like the option to save transparency with a colour, though, it could be very handy, as could the palette export feature.
UI re-draws aren't very smooth. I put a 3D effect on a shape and then moved it around and rescaled it. I could see the re-draws happening, where Xara moves much more detailed objects around on screen completely smoothly.
There are a lot of things I think Affinity Designer does really well. The way grouped objects get put into a single layer is clean and intuitive. I also like having transfer/blending modes available for all layers and layer effects seem instantly familiar although, again, I'm not sure it's a better option than separate toolbar buttons like you get in Xara. Overall, Affinity Designer feels a lot more fiddly than I am used to. With a few UI tweaks and greater functionality within tools it could be really good. Obviously it comes nowhere near close to Xara's very mature featureset but for a version 1.0 product, it is quite promising. For the moment, though, I won't be buying it, I'm afraid, even with the very generous offer we've been given.

Petar Petrenko reacted to Mark Ingram in Does Affinity Designer final release have tools that were not in the beta?
The final RC that was available on Friday is the edition that ships today.
We will shortly be offering a customer only beta (i.e. you will need a valid product key to install it) where we will be testing out the latest fixes and new features before they are released.

Every new good implemented import filter means one app less to use, more room on the HD and more computer speed. :)

I'll just add a quick mention here that CDR import is entirely doable - it has been done many times before so I'm sure we can add it (we worked out Freehand import - broadly - and that hasn't been attempted many times, after all!) it's just a case of waiting for the time when that addition will be of most benefit to our customers, vs some other functionality that they may benefit from as we only have limited development resources.

Yeah, but Inkscape opens CDR files up to version X4, even CMX ones. Maybe they have a deal with Corel? :)

It would be fantastic if we can change line atributes (color, width, opacity...) from segment to segment. :)
