Petar Petrenko reacted to awhite in [APh] TIF compression
I noticed Photo uses LZW compression for TIF files and there is no option to choose a compression type. That's fine for 8bit images, but for 16bit images a LZW compressed file is larger than the same file with no compression, so it would be better to use ZIP or no compression for 16bit images.
And one more detail, It would be great if I could select to use *.TIF extension instead of *.TIFF in the save/export dialog, all other programs I use produce TIF and it's a little annoying for me to delete the "f" from the file extension every time.

It would be very nice if the Affinity team decides to include some of the VivaDesigner features. Some of them are extremely nice abd usefull.

Yes, I totally agree with you. IDML is used to convert all new InDesign file formats to the previous versions. So, if implemented, all InDesign documents would be easilly converted into Publisher.

Petar Petrenko reacted to VIPStephan in When is Affinity Designer going to get ruler origin adjustments?
It’s not there yet but will come eventually. See, the thing is that everybody can’t believe that “their” much needed and oft-used feature isn’t implemented yet – but that’s a thousand different “most important” features and the developers can’t do everything at once. But I, on the other hand, can’t believe that this is a feature that would hold anyone back from abandoning Adobe; in the meantime you could use guides as “waypoints” to remember where your zero point and other relevant points are on the rulers.

Just adding my 50c regarding the wait for Publisher. I do not mind if it takes more time than we hope, but please do take care of the quality of its key feature: text setting. The only good enough algorithms I know of are in LaTeX and InDesign. I have been using InDesign for years, setting book pages that indeed look good. I take heavy use even of typographic fine-tuning. With a decent amount of work one can achieve a lot with InDesign. I confirm I as many others I am not interested in polluting Publisher functionality by stuff from Photo or Designer, I just need it to be really good at dealing with very long and complex texts, placing bitmaps/grpahics prepared in Photo and Designer, and - this is also crucial - prooducing high quality PDFXs.
Also, some way of importing InDesign files without completely screwing their contents will be needed. I am certainly not the only one who keeps an archive of a large number of layouts that may need to get reused in future.
And yes I am aching to get away from Adobe as so many other users. Now I stick with CS6, hoping it will survive for some more time before an OS update renders it unusable. I hope and pray Affinity Publisher will have matured enough by then. (But rest assured: I am going to purchase Publisher the moment it becomes available).

Hi,
there is no beta since December 3. Are we waiting for something special, or...? :)

Petar Petrenko reacted to Haluke in Photo and Designer: Seamless tiles and infinite canvas
+1 for seamless texture editing in AP and AD. (Vector tiling would be cool, too.)
The affine filter sort of does the job, but going back and forth, retiling/resetting the offset and
rescaling/checking how it tiles is really cumbersome. Try making a high resolution tree bark texture tileable.
While a nice outcome is perfectly achievable, much of the effort goes into fiddling with the affine filter.
Krita's approach reminds me of the live filters we have.
Here is how it's "supposed to" work in Krita. Unfortunately, the mac version just doesn't work properly.

Petar Petrenko reacted to anon1 in [AP] Few suggestions...
> ability to modify selection frame size with handles ( like in PS). Or maybe it's already in and I didn't find it ? It's really convenient to adjust large selection area precisely at a pixel scale.
At least this one is possible
Press Q to enter quick mask mode and then activate the move tool
Cheers

Petar Petrenko reacted to Marianna in Affinity ico
Just a tiny small UX thing - could affinity apps icons (on windows toolbar) have a first letter in them (P for Photo, D for Designer)? I find it realy confusing which icon is for which app.
Thanks for great work

Petar Petrenko reacted to Stephen_H in PPI, not DPI , and numerical entries
I also feel strongly about the PPI vs DPI issue. I don't understand why you chose Dots over Pixels. AD & AP define image sizes in Pixels, not Dots, so why jump to dots when using an abbreviation.
It feels a bit lazy to use DPI just because it's more commonly used that the correct term PPI. These are professional tools and should use the correct, professional terminologies. Leave the common-place "slang" for consumer products.
I took a 5 day PhotoShop course 10 years ago, and the first day was dedicated just to basic terminologies like resolution, size, dimension etc. We couldn't learn the app unless we understood the basic principles and I find today's graduates don't know them and make terrible mistakes preparing files for printing, and interchanging DPI and PPI just causes confusion, handicapping them further. We don't call rectangles blocks, or strokes lines… or pixels dots. Ever seen a "16 megaDOT" digital camera and you don't get a phrase more "consumer-ish" than that.
If DPI is used for describing the resolution of a monitor… well, that's a bit of a debatable term because the diodes that represent pixels are roundish (kind of pill-shaped) and since DPI is a hardware term, then it's not wrong. 3 diodes (RGB) create an optical illusion we perceive as a pixel. I'll really put my head on the block here and say: there are no physical pixels on a screen.
For the uninitiated who would like to know...
PPI: Pixels per inch (resolution of raster files - images)
DPI: Dots per inch (resolution of hardware devices like printers & scanners)
LPI: Lines per inch (the number of rows of printed dots of ink per inch on paper)
If PPI is low, you get pixelation
If DPI is low, you get banding
If LPI is low, you see the ink dots on the paper
Pixelation can be fixed by reducing the LPI
Banding can be fixed by reducing the LPI
LPI can be increased by printing onto a paper that produces less bleed / dot gain.
… Yes, I know I'm an anal dooshbag on this topic.
(and to anyone who read right to the end, thank you for humoring me)

Petar Petrenko reacted to Aammppaa in [FORUM] We need separate sections for AP and AD
Instead of splitting the forums is there a mod to the forum software that would enforce tagging of posts from a list of existing options.
Users would have to select application and OS, before the post could be created?
Searches could then be filtered using the tags to limit results.

Petar Petrenko reacted to Richard S. in [FORUM] We need separate sections for AP and AD
It may be worth having a general chit chat forum also, otherwise some members may only ever visit the forum for the app they own.
Having a general chit chat forum makes a really great sense of community.

Petar Petrenko reacted to disturbed13 in Affinity Designer Workbook
i would love to see a Affinity Photo Workbook to accompany this one, and maybe even an Publisher book when it becomes available
lets face it
your products are just amaxing (yes i spelled that right) and they should have equally amaxing books - like the workbook - to accompany them on any creators table

Petar Petrenko reacted to tporett in JPEG 2000
I agree that JPEG 2000 needs to be supported and offer the lossless function. I have saved a lot of space using it in Photoshop and look forward to exporting in Affinity Photo.

Petar Petrenko got a reaction from Alex_M in JPEG 2000
Hi,
are there any chances for support of JPEG 2000 format? As you know, this format produces very small losless files and Photo can give it a second chance. It can successfully replace JPG and TIF files and if it is possible to add layers to it, it would be fantastic.

Petar Petrenko reacted to Alfred in Affinity Photo 1.5 has launched!
Welcome to the Affinity Forums, Transrobotism. :)
No. Serif have made it clear that they currently have no plans to add website building capabilities to the Affinity suite. We can use the Affinity apps to create content, of course, but there is no provision for publishing to HTML.

Laso tool:
Drag + RightMouse -- not works
Drag + ALT -- Subtracts (OK)
Drag + CTRL -- Add (not OK, it should move the selection)
Click + SHIFT -- works only if you start the action outside the selection, otherwise it moves the selection.

Petar Petrenko reacted to Bri-Toon in Affinity interface legibility
Oops. I didn't understand what you meant by mutual (I think of it as sharing). I thought maybe you meant semi-exclusive. My mistake.
Yes, that is what I mean. I don't use Twitter either. I just knew about it because it was talked about in another topic. I was afraid that it would look older as light UIs usually do, but the white gradient on the top really comes to life. I do really like it.
Yes, it is now. I am just a very literal person, so some list structures don't always make sense to me. Thank you guys for your patience. I know I can be Captain Oblivious.

Petar Petrenko reacted to Alfred in Affinity interface legibility
Petar's I.1 is what we currently have, which is a combination of your 1-1 and 1-2: some features are shared across the apps, but others are exclusive to one of them. His I.2 is a (mutually exclusive) alternative, where there are no shared features at all.

Petar Petrenko got a reaction from thomasp in [APh] Version 1.6 - suggested additions
1. Before / After preview check box for tools in "Adjustment" panel and in some others (if there)
2. Double click on "Zoom" tool zooms the picture to actual size (CTRL + 8) not to 100% (CTRL + 1)
3. in "File / Export" possibility to choose all needed formats for export with check boxes next to each export format icon and show all options in one window (remove "More...")
4. Join "Open" and "Import"
5. Join "Save", "Save As" and "Export"
6. Remove vertical line used for rotating an object. It can be done on the corners
7. Add handles to "Rectangular" and "Eliptical" marquee tools for precize positioning and resizing.
