Petar Petrenko reacted to AdamW in Affinity Publisher Customer Beta - 1.10.0.1103
Status: Beta
Purpose: Fixes and Improvements
Requirements: Purchased Affinity Publisher
Windows Store: Not Submitted
Download: Download
Auto-update: Not Available
---
We are pleased to announce that Affinity Publisher Customer Beta 1.10.0.1103 is now available as a download from the link above.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
Due to current and anticipated changes to help with performance issues this version is now 1.10.0 and replaces the previous 1.9.4 beta. All previous changes from 1.9.4 have been rolled into this beta.
As such, we strongly recommend that you do not use this beta for real work as data could be lost and the files you save are not guaranteed to open in previous / future versions of Affinity Designer.
---
Fixed crash composing text under certain circumstances
IDML Import - Fixed issue where text could disappear with certain files
PDF Import - Fixed crash for specific file where the importer was creating many nested empty layers unnecessarily
Vector Export - Simplify gradient fills that have been created with many stops that could crash when exporting
Vector Export - Fixed instance where clipped items were being rasterised unnecessarily
Fixed issue where 'Next Style' could fail to work when entering text
Fixed possible crash when auto-flowing text into master based text frames
Character Panel - Kerning and Tracking scroll increments are inconsistent
Character Panel- Baseline field up/down arrows function incorrectly using comma decimals.
Fixed issue where 'Limit zoom to 100%' could fail to apply
Fixed crashes with Japanese IME under certain circumstances

Petar Petrenko got a reaction from Old Bruce in Distance from Top of Page or Top Margin
I was a QXP user several years ago and now, while I'm waiting for Publisher to introduce footnotes, I use ID. I start with:
cleaning the text in ID, convert local character formating with character styles, apply text style to the whole document because more than 90% of it is body text, apply the rest of the styles. Number 2 could be avoided if the A-Team decide not to reset local character formatings with applying local paragraph or paragraph style formatings. It would dramaticaly accelerate my workflow.

Yes, I agree. But all the authors have prof. PhD titles of the Philosophy and Phylology faculties. Most of them are so arogant and hard to work with. They don't give me clean text, because they expect it is my job to correct it.

IMO it is bellow their level on thinking. They simply ignore Quark's or InDesign's 20+ years of hard work and try to reinvent hot water again. Some features must be done as their big brothers did many years ago -- nothing more, nothing less.

Petar Petrenko got a reaction from Mithferion in Word Count
Why? I usually write text in DTP software, not in Word. I hate it.
BTW, character count can be useful to determine the price for the customer. For example, dividing the # of chars (without spaces) with 1800 tells me how typewriter pages* are in total inside document. then I multiple that value with my price, like:
typewriter pages x price = amout the customer has to pay
*) typewriter pages has 1800 chatracters in average. It is supposed that the page contains 28-30 rowa with 60-66 chars per row -- in average 1800 chars. On typewriter machine all the characters are equal size, but in word processor or DTP program the customer may enter smaller sized text to fake the size of a book to pay less for the pre-press.

(18th May 2021) TechRadar has reviewed Affinity Publisher and given it's verdict. https://www.techradar.com/best/adobe-indesign-alternatives
Here's the highlights...
Come on Affinity we don't just want the red features, we need them. (At least if you're seriously interested in publishing).

You can do anything you want just with "Based on" option. There is no need for "Group" styles.

Petar Petrenko got a reaction from oakgt in Can we get more info about Group Text Styles, please?
Hi,
I tried to find out what are group styles but I can't understand them at all.
I opened a "Base" text style which is defined as "Group" and found that it is set to "Minion Pro, Regular, 12 pt" Then I opend a "Body" text style which is based on "Base" group text style and there is only "Font Size" set to 12 pt. If I change The font and it's size in "Base" style, text formated as "Body" changes into the font taken from "Base" style but the size stays the same from "Body".
What I can conclude from this is that "Group" works the same as the style is set with "Based on".
Does "Group" have to work the same as grouping the styles into folders like in InDesign? If so, why it can be defined as text style at all?
EDITED:
I know that you A-Team had something good in mind when adding this option, but it really needs some better explanation to be accepted by users. Until that, I equate it to "Based on" seting.
BTW, it would be nice if you add creating folders for text styles for gouping purposes.
