Hi, you can read first in general how the hunspell based free spell checker and morphological analyzer library is build/works/used, for example here ...
https://github.com/hunspell/hunspell Next you can look where Publisher puts his user specific data/setups etc., one common place on MacOS would probably be for example something like ...

Captions and tablenotes are completelly different terms.
Captions are used to describe the tables, photos, charts, drawings... and tablenotes have the same functionality of the footnotes, but they explain the text which is located in a cell of a table.

Endnotes can be positioned at the end of a section, story or the publication. So they can be named sectionnotes, storynotes or just endnotes if they are at the end of the publication. They are (or, can be) used for bibliography. Footnotes are used to exolain some part of the text on the actual page. Tablenotes are used to explain some text placed within the cells of the table and they are positioned at tne bottom of the table. So, I don't see any reason why these 3 kinds of notes could not exist in same publication.

Thank you for the clarification. I’m afraid it wasn’t obvious to me that your phrase “has to be” was intended to indicate a suggested improvement.

Forgot to say, with different numbering, too. Maybe with some special characters like asterisks, daggers...

Table footnotes too, but with footnote text located just bellow the table, not at the bottom of the page.

Designer has also, at least, two "extra" tools:
Node Tool - can be achieved by double clicking on a curve; Pen and Pencil Tools - can be combined together to work just like in Freehand.

On a Mac you can just hold down the 'e' key and you will be offered a selection and then select the letter using the mouse or the number:

I may be only dreaming but, wouldn't it be amazing if there was a Pre-press persona in publisher that had all the current - save as package and preflight features moved over, and also a fully featured output pane giving you control over seps, spots, screen angles, trapping overprint and knockout and maybe even a paginatior with intelligent creep (type in your stock thickness) Yes I know this is stuff most print service providers will sort in RIP, its just having the option for that extra bit of control and piece of mind.
Also would need a PDF/X output viewer with full seps preview and also be able to generate the pdf and automatically open it and check PDF/x compliance - and let you view the seps - maybe there's a way of adding proof check features so when PDF's are viewed in the freely downloadable + web based check Affinity PDF viewer (which you send links to all your clients), there would be a three stage proof process so you client ticks a box (to sign off for print) the the design house ticks a box, then the print service tick a box which flags once its been successfully ripped as is in the print queue ---------
Sorry just had this really odd dream - I'm off for some readybrek

Maybe it would be nice to have this option in Publisher -- if the size of the word, (in this case superscript) is changed, then the footnote reference size and position in the text, (in this case number 2) to follow the changes proportionally.

Please, add in "Preferences" an option to control the size and position of super- and subscripts and the size of the small caps.

But you need to know where are these folders inside Affinity folder structure for each app.
Beside, you have items that can be installed into one only and some others into more.

Petar Petrenko reacted to Mark Oehlschlager in Request: Replace "Leading Override" with "Leading"
It's not simply a matter of an extra feature in Publisher that doesn't exist in other page layout applications. It's that it a) subverts the established UI standards of character and paragraph panels seen in other major page layout applications, repurposing the standard leading attribute to become a leading override attribute without calling attention to it's new function, causing confusion;  and b) departs from logic of a typesetter thinking in terms of paragraph attributes – face, weight, point size and leading – and not only sets a trap by redefining the leading field in the character panel to become a leading override field, but introduces workflow inefficiencies by forcing the typesetter to flip back and forth between panels to set the basic attributes of a paragraph. Working quickly to build paragraph styles one is accustomed to setting these properties up in a single panel.
Any way, I realize that Affinity have much bigger fish to fry – including a total rethink of the Color Swatch panel, which is a clunky mess. This will likely not change. It seems baked in at this point.

Correct.  I assumed your hypothetical of introducing a larger point size to selected words within a paragraph for emphasis. And in that hypothetical, the leading for the paragraph is set to accommodate that design choice. To apply a local leading override for a selected 14 point word within an 11/13 paragraph would mean forcing that one line in the paragraph to separate the upper half of the paragraph from the lower half. (The application adds leading above.)
I'm not sure why one would want to intentionally separate two halves of a logical block of text (a paragraph) for the sake of emphasizing a word or phrase with a larger point size.

I recommend first to experiment with the various available options (to avoid confusion & wrong convictions). If you don't need an option just ignore it instead of blaming it, otherwise you might find many "redundant" features in Affinity, in particular for those which enable various ways to Rome.
In this sample no leading override is used, the larger leading is auto-generated for the larger text size by the leading option "Default":

Leading is not a character spec. You don't lead one character; you might raise it, but not lead it. People don't set type o n e  c h a r a c h t e r  at a time. Leading is a function of lines of type, therefore it is a paragraph spec normally found in paragraph styles. Affinity screwed up on this.
My next lesson will be on Kerning: What it really means for designers.
