I am very much a Newbie, too and have made my own tutorial in language simple enough for me to understand and will share it with you in hopes that it can help you. It is most likely the same process that Madame but mine is basic for dummies (me, not you).
 
1. Use Selection Brush Tool making sure you have Snap to Edges checked and select White circle at top of Left Panel
2. Draw around what you want to cut and Command C to copy
3. Make New Document and Command V to paste image you copied.
        - Crop down as close to this image as you can and Apply>Save As .AF Photo
4. Choose Open in AP and bring in the Photo you want to add this image that you just cut/saved into and choose "Place">choose your                  saved >AF Photo (your cut image)
5. You can adjust size and move it (V) around to position this image you have brought in
6. When it looks like you want it>Export it

I will soon have Affinity Photo for a year and am really surprised that Serif has not come out with a manual or someone has not written one to sell on the market. I have learned and can do all the basics but still dont understand some of the concepts for photo editing so that I can further my skills.
 
I have seriously considered switching to Photoshop, monthly fee and all because there is so much written info out there on Photoshop.

I got the Mac version back in Dec 2015 and liked it.  I got the iPad version in June 2017 and love it.  Recently I ordered an Apple Lightning to USB adapter.  Yesterday I imported some Raw photos I had taken with my Canon 5d mark iii camera, to my iPad Pro.  I was so pleased at how fast they imported into the ipad’s Photos App and then I opened them into AP.  They came into the AP’s Develop Module and I edited them with my Apple Pencil.  I am very happy with this process.

I am confused.  I have the latest update to AP on my MBP running the latest High Sierra update.  I had turned off the Welcome screen in AP long ago but when I try to turn it back on for these free add on's, I select Help and dont see Welcome anywhere, I searched for Welcome Screen in the Help topics and it says No Results.  Where do I go from here?

I have been using the latest version of AP since the last update with no problems.  Updated my iPad Pro 2017 12.9” to IOS 11, have had no issues with that until I tried to edit pics this morning in AP.  Took photos yesterday with my Canon 5d Mark III camera.  I shoot Raw and pics taken previously have been loading from Photos app into the Develop module of AP.   These latest pics are all loading as JPEGs onto the Photo module BUT are still showing 24-25 mb size.  Am I supposed to do something different now with IIS 11 to get them to load into the Develop module?

Already tried it, not as good, the trouble with the adobe suite of apps is that to apply multiple effects, you have to switch between the apps, with is time consuming and annoying... 
so app you mentioned does indeed work, but is not a fully featured... it's more of a one trick pony....

I had issue with my Raw photos, taken with my Canon 5D Mark III, imported into my MBP's Apple Photos, opening in AP for iPad even after the 1.6.3 update.  All I got was a "Loading from Photos" msg forever.  Asked about it on this forum with no answers. So, I deleted the App reinstalled it, kept trying that w/no success, until 3rd time. Wala, success, a Raw photo loaded and even Develop Persona showed up.  I was one happy camper.  Even tho after editing/exporting/sharing/save image, the jpeg is 31 mb.
Then my 2 week old 12.9" iPad Pro began issues with its backup to iCloud.  As in, it would not.  Apple CS did all they could, ran diagnostics (no issues w/ipp found).  So advised me to Reset/Erase All Settings and setup as a new iPad, initially I had setup this new iPad up with the last backup from iCloud of my previous iPad.   If that didn't work, an Apple Store/Genius Bar visit was required.  So, I was lucky, that procedure is now allowing backup to iCloud to work.  BUT, that of course, caused me to have to download from my Purchased Apps, Affinity Photo for iPad AGAIN.  I am now back to my original issue of raw photos not loading.  I have tried the delete app/reinstall four times now with no success this time.
So, for now, AP for iPad, is shelved.  I will try it again after each update it gets, hoping for use in the future.  The few days I was able to use it, along with my Apple Pencil, I loved it, even more than editing in AP on my MBP.
This post is nothing more than a vent so feel free to ignore it.  So long til later, I hope!

Here's how I got the Clone Tool to work....I found I could not make the selection of an area with my Pencil, I had to use my finger and press harder than usual. Then once I got that area to show up in a preview bubble, I could then use the Pencil to paste where I wanted to clone to (paste). Not a good technical answer, but its what works for me.

There are no foolish questions on forums, especially for someone new.
Yes the pencil had a 100% charge when I was using it.

Did you try "disable Embed Metadata"? I had an earlier question on the same thing, that was suggested and it worked for me.

Thank you very much for stating some of the differences. I have been using the Serif Engine from day 1 and after I got used to shooting raw photos, I set the Tone Curve to take no action, so sticking with that sounds like my best option. I take alot of photos of my black faced dog, so those arnt standard pics. But I will try both engines and compare.

Can someone please give me a step by step to add NIK plugins, Ive downloaded but can not load install.

I'm sure no one is as slow as this newbie but just wanted to say thanks for adding Share>Add to Photos at bottom of File Menu. I think it was added in the latest update but who knows, at my age it could have been there from day one. But it saves me a step from having to do this after exporting photo to Finder.

Not a question but didnt know where else to post. There is a nice article in latest issue of MacFormat magazine on Affinity Photo including how-to's. This is the first of 5 monthly articles. It's a UK based magazine and I am in the US but it is a good mag and very nice info on Affinity.

I was able to cut an object from one photo (one of my dogs) and add it to a photo of the other so they look as iff they are sitting side by side. Original individual photos were taken as portraits and all was the same for both original photos so that part was easy. But all in all, the end result of combined photos into one was very easy. I thank you guys very much for providing the info you did.
 
I used the Selection Tool to select the outline of the dog I wanted. Made a New Document. Copied the selected dog from my starting document and pasted it into the New Document resulting in an image of the outline of the dog. Then opened a photo of the other dog. Pasted the image in the opened photo of dog 2 and voila! a Combined Photo as if my two dogs agreed to pose side by side.  I am just so VERY HAPPY!!! Thanks for the help

Thank you Callum, I did export it but I didn't know if that contained all my edits. Good to know! And thank you, Madame, I like the Merge step, it seems to simplify the process. And you helped me last week by pointing me to the Help Menu under Layers and that was great written info!
