Excluding parts of a picture to merge with a drawing

I need to take a person from a picture and include it on my drawing.
What are the best options for doing this?
I don't need to do image corrections and other photo edition, just need to be able to clean the parts of the image I don't need.
I tried with the marquee tool, and it seams to do the job, but I can't find any good tutorial on this.
