    J3rry,
In both weight and width, variable fonts allow you to control those values beyond the presets, so if you think the bold is to bold and the semibold too thin, you can set the weight somewhere in the middle. But variable fonts allow you to control more things, such as optical sizing, the length of serifs.

Recursive Sans is a great example of what can be done: IT allows you to control weight, slant, "casualness" and "monospaceness"

Yes, and that works if the font you want to change is installed on your system. But does that work for fonts that are missing on your system? There are reports that it doesn't.

Yeah, I know this subject has been addressed a few times... I just did a search.
First, let me say, I've been using AD for a few months now and I think it;s a great piece of software. I come from the Sign industry, and have been using Corel, Illustrator, CAD, and SignLab for over 20 years. I have both a like and dislike for all of them. Every time you think you're going to be set for a bit, your OS updates and you have to shell out thousands for updated software. While AD and AP lack a couple of features here and there, I've found work-arounds, For example, layer warps with blends and transparencies can create some nice mesh gradients.
One feature that I find super important is true vector brushes that can be expanded. I have been using expanded strokes to create backfills, 3d effects, tons of text effects for many years. Expanding strokes, breaking them apart, welding them all save countless hours of hand drawing vectors. The work I do is primarily commercial, such as logos and lettering, so I'm not sure how important this feature would be to the artistic community, but thought I would drop my 2cents.
(I'm embarrassed to say that I've bought way more brush packs than I should have before figuring this out.)
Other than that, keep up the work, this is a great tool you all are putting together.

3rd time in 2 days that I end up here because Affinity Designer lacks the most fundamental tools... absolutely unbelievable.
    I just checked:
Aldus/Adobe Freehand MX (2002): spiral tool present
AI (CS 6): spiral tool is there
Corel Draw 2019: spiral too available
    Rhino CAD: has spiral tool
Inkscape: yup, has a spiral tool

Affinity Designer V1.10.5 (end of 2022): NIX, NADA, NOTHING
Unbelievable. I'm slowly beginning to suspect that AD is optimized for the quick production of flashy eye candy but not for the professional development of user interfaces, diagrams, illustration, technical documentation or how-tos...

There might be some individual variable typefaces that seem gimmicky, but that's a subjective judgement.
I, for one, utterly detest the Arial typeface. I think it's harshly ugly looking, especially when set next to a far more "neutral" sans like Akzidenz Grotesk or Helvetica. That's my subjective judgment on it. My hatred for Arial is extended by all of its horrible over-use. It's the default font in many applications. In the sign industry Arial is perhaps the most misused and abused typeface there is. So many hacks out there just love artificially squeezing and stretching it to force-fit it into a tight space. That makes an already ugly typeface even more ugly. The tyranny of that typeface (and poor quality graphic design in general) helps fuel a growing anti-signs movement in many city governments.
Variable fonts can help fight some of that problem. I have a few "work horse" variable typefaces in my collection that come in very handy when I'm working with very demanding space limitations. A single variable font file with weight and width axes can yield many thousands of possible combinations. The results look far more graceful and professional than taking a stock, static font and artificially distorting it to squish it into a space.

Gimmicky? There are many gimmicky typefaces of every sort, and I suspect some variable fonts will follow the same path. I have noticed that the demos of variable font capabilities often show the gimmick potential of variable fonts.
However, there's nothing inherently gimmicky about variable fonts. I increasingly depend on them for dealing with tight space requirements or adjusting display-sized type, such as headlines, to achieve exactly the right balance of weights and widths. As someone with a self-described conservative outlook (on type and design, I suppose), variable fonts will enable you to fine-tune those classic typefaces to their best advantage for the job at hand.

Another "me too"! Pattern fills are a big part of my workflow and it's highly inconvenient to have to go raster rather than be able to use vector pattern fills. I use pattern fills for noise, texture, geometric patter fills, etc.

You and I (and everyone else) expect that. What we get is the result of some complicated algorithms deciding where and how to place nodes on a newly calculated closed curve. A not trivial programming task.

Check your Start and End nodes for double nodes. Also try toggling them to round nodes and back to square nodes. This is to get rid of any handles on them.

kemie reacted to AndrewC in Need ability to edit Fireworks PNG
I've been using Fireworks since it was Macromedia. In my mind it is the best graphic editing program out there for web developers like me. Simple to use. Intuitive and very functional. I've rarely run into something I couldn't do with it. However, of course, Adobe is dumping it and it doesn't work so well on Mac's High Sierra. It's currently limping and I fear it will become unusable completely very soon.

Ultimately, what I need is the ability to open a PNG from fireworks (LAYERED - NOT FLATTENED) and maintain editablity (text, objects etc) in Affinity Designer. I've downloaded the trial but it doesn't appear to be possible. Converting PNG from Fireworks to Photoshop often doesn't translate well, not to mention the amount of time to go through this process is a bit ridiculous when I have so many files.

Is there any chance that you guys are going to make it possible to open and edit the old files (saving as the afdesign files)? This would be the biggest thing keeping me from pulling the trigger on purchasing the program. The second thing that I would need that Fireworks has is the ability to create hotspots and save out as html. I'm sure I can find some other app for this though, so it's not a deal breaker.

If it helps I can provide a bunch of sample files I have in FW that you can use to test the functionality I'm asking for.

    Hi!
As a feature request, it would be so helpful to be able to break down colour groupings within a single Application Palette or Document Palette. For example, I'd like to group my primary colours on their own at the top, and then create secondary and tertiary groups/rows for tints and shades of the same colours, or secondary colours, etc.
Being able to create an organized hierarchy within a palette rather than having a mass grouping of all saved swatches would be immensely helpful!
    Thanks.

With these simple hatching styles you can hatch your vector objects in Affinity Designer or Affinity Photo. Affinity Publisher Beta seems not working yet (previews looks strange on my machine).

    DOWNLOAD: https://mensch-mesch.com/download/affinity-designer-schraffuren-hatchings/
With the red styles you can easily change the color of the hatching while using an adjusment layer recolor.

To make a font you need a LOT of functionality, not only to draw the characters, but to set encoding, spacing, kerning, etc. I'd much rather Affinity focused on other features and left type design to other apps.

I'm really hoping Affinity updates to allow true 100% vector brushes to be more editable and relevant in future releases. What are currently labeled "vector brushes" are not 100% vector and cannot be expanded as vectors. They have their uses and I appreciate them - but in my line of work, I need to be able to export 100% vector - no raster in the final output.
Right now we can only modify the 100% vector brush to a simple taper on each end - As I have attached to this post, there are many other types of tapers and such I'd love to be able to do with a 100% vector brush.
Going a little further - I'm hoping for a blob-tool that can allow for any shape to be made and used -

kemie reacted to ThirtyFiveThousand in Feature Request: remember Vector Brush sizes
While using vector brushes in Affinity Designer, if I change brushes, I change the brush size as well. I understand that every brush may have been set up with an ideal size by its creator. I even understand that saving the last brush size used for every single brush in the palette may get cumbersome memory wise. I just find it a bit obstructive that if I use Vector Brush A at a size of 9pt, I change to Vector Brush B for a second, just out of curiosity or by accident(!), I select Vector Brush A again, and its size has defaulted to 2.3pt, or some other random number that isn’t where I left it. The feature I’m requesting: either leave the brush size where I left it between brush changes, or save the last size used with each brush, or let me set the default size for each brush under the “More” menu at the bottom of the screen. Even if all the brush sizes ran back to their respective defaults when I close the document, I could live with that. I would just like to be able to touch Pencil to screen and go, rather than have to adjust the Vector Brush Size each and every time I make a minor tool change.
