Occasionally I need to create a bunch of video titles with filenames and content from a CSV file. Several years ago I wrote a java script to do this in Photoshop. With the Photoshop template loaded, it prompts for the CSV file and, for each parsed line of the file, drops content into text layers and saves each new video title as a PSD file with a sequence number. Later those files will be imported into FCPX as a batch, making it a very efficient workflow. If something changes I tweak the CSV file and regenerate the batch.

Is there the equivalent capability in either Photo or Designer? Is there a better way to do it?

    Thanks for insight…

    Thanks in advance!

Just to clarify, my "No, its fine as it is" vote does not actually mean I think things are fine as they are, just that I do not think there is any practical way to make them better.

Uuiop reacted to rubs in [AD] Multiple-page PDFs from the Export persona, how?
    Hi all,

I can't be sure I'm not missing something, but it seems that when exporting a multiple-artboard document via the Export persona I'll always get a single page giant PDF, while when using the Export dialog I always get a mutliple-page document (which is actually what I want). So... can I use the Export persona to get a multiple-page PDF at all?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

What would really hold me over until AP is released would be if the people at Serif could work with Quark so that Affinity files could open up natively in xPress. Being able to import files into a page layout program without first needing to export would be really nice and, I would think, minimal work on your behalf.

Uuiop reacted to jewy48 in SVG Outline and Path Inconsistent on Export
    Hi,

First time post here, because I am experiencing a little problem which I can't seem to solve.

I have a word made in Affinity Photo. I have made that word as an outline with a stroke of 4 points. When I export it as SVG so I can place it on my design in Autodesk Fusion (3D software) I can get the path by setting the stroke to 0 points and I can get the outline by setting the stroke to 4 points. I need both for my design in Fusion.

Now I have tried to make the word again, but the SVGs only seem to import as a path and I can't get the outline under any circumstances. This is with the path in exactly the same Affinity Photo file as the original, just as a new "layer".

Does anybody have an idea if I am missing a setting there?
    Thanks!
    Joachim

Uuiop reacted to R C-R in contacting support
I think you will find that support through the forums is outstanding, quite possibly among if not the best from any commercial software developer. Not only are the staff quick to reply to almost every inquiry, there are many users willing & eager to share what they know about almost any topic you can imagine, including where the Affinity products need work or another app would be a better choice.

If that is not enough, occasionally the developers, the people who actually write the code, will take the time to post replies about technical issues. What other commercial support site offers that?

I think I need some help on the Affinity app.  I use file (template) to add photos to and clip to layers. ( files will have 30-55 layers). I have tried two different templates in .psd format so there are a lot of layers.  For some reason I can see the bottom most layers of the template when I scroll down and hold my finger in place.  However I cannot get them to stay visible to move them up or add photos clipping to them. It is usually about 4 to 5 layers.  What am I doing wrong or not checking in a box to see them?

Uuiop reacted to Techsmechs in Print scaling - only integers?
I have artwork that needs to be correct dimensions when printed. This seems impossible.. tried professional printers and also bought an OKI A3 printer to do the job.
My artwork, which is 500 mm, prints as 501 mm. Now, if only I could set print scaling to 99.8% that would solve my problem. But it seems scaling is restricted to integer values?
Why is that? Any way around it?

Uuiop reacted to R C-R in Lasso tool
If you think about it objectively, "Magic Wand" is about the silliest & least descriptive name possible for a graphics tool. "Lasso" describes the icon but not how the tool works because a lasso is a rope with one free end & a noose at the other. The Pan tool hand icon could refer to anything done with a hand & "pan" has a different meaning in the video world. "Raster" & "rasterize" are terms borrowed from the video industry when CRT images were created using parallel scan lines called rasters. Digitally rasterizing an image actually converts it to a bitmap (a map of pixel values) but "bitmap" can also refer to a one bit deep monochrome image.

We sometimes refer to the pixels in a bitmap/raster image file as if they had a direct, one-to-one correlation to something in the physical world but they don't. We often use ppi & dpi interchangeably but they refer to two very different things. "Color" (or if you prefer "colour") is a property of light but we also think of it as a property of things that do not emit light. We think of both light emitters & non emitters as having a single specific color but that is never really true -- our brains just evaluate the relative strengths of different parts of the spectrum of emitted light we are sensitive to & pick the most dominate part of the spectrum as its color. That varies by individual & even by the physical & psychological state of a given individual. We make an artificial distinction between color & grayscale because our eyes have different kinds of receptors for colors & for intensity. They have different sensitivities & are not evenly distributed on the retina so 'color vision' is most acute at the center of our field of view & much less so elsewhere, but we don't notice that because we move our eyes, head, & body to compensate for that & build a mental image of what we are seeing that changes over time.

So basically, most of the terminology we use is in some way inaccurate, contrived, ambiguous, or silly.

I use a 'suck it and see' approach. If the first inpainting doesn't do what I want, cmd-z reverts and I try from a different direction. After a while it gets much easier to guess what will work successfully. Crude, but effective :)

For the reasons MEB mentioned, I do not think printed manuals would help much. What I think would is publicly accessible online versions of the built-in help files. Since they are already in html format, this would not be overly hard for Serif to do. They would be relatively easy to update as the apps gain new features, & this would cost much less than providing printed manuals, particularly versions for each supported language.

This would leverage the power of 'smart' search engine algorithms like Google or Bing use, which would help when searching for a term or technique users know by a different name & even more when they don't know exactly what to search for. There is no way a manual could include all the terms or references users might be looking for -- some of them are unique to a particular industry or craft, or refer to technologies that have evolved over as much as several centuries & will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.

Apart from that, this would enable forum users to link to specific help topics in posts instead of trying to explain where other users can find them & make it easier to identify any that need to be improved.

Why does it seem that the folks with 1 or 2 posts (brand new users, I presume) are more likely to be the ones telling Serif (and all of us) that their products are crap? Why is it that the same users don't seem to want to read a Help file, ask a civilized question in the Forum, or simply accept that this program is not Photoshop? Why do newbies seem to be more likely to rant in ALL CAPS?

    It gets old, doesn't it?
