  1. Hi! I have several hundred (~500) different SVG files, all square icons with designs on them. I'd like to arrange them all in one big document, with an equal amount of space between them, so that I can print it as a poster. Other than doing it manually and copying/pasting each icon into the "master" document, is there any way I can somehow script it or just open all the SVG files at once and tell Designer "Combine and arrange these"? Also, is it even possible for me to add that many nodes to one document without crashing my computer? I have a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with 16GB RAM.

  2. Hi! I have a shape with several pieces that I want to cut out. I have followed the instructions I found here: https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/119718/why-cant-subtract-complex-form-in-affinity-designer but it doesn't work. Somehow, I got it to work once with a different file but I'm not quite sure how, and now, I'm unable to reproduce that success with a new file. Is this a bug, or am I missing something? I want to cut out the red shape from the white background. When I cut it, it ends up looking like this, instead of the holes being cut out and showing the transparent background:

    What am I doing wrong?

  3. @Hokusai: good news! I took advantage of the 20% off and purchased the full version of Designer, and tried opening my .ai file again; everything loaded! The only thing that's missing, as far as I can tell, is that I had organized things in layers and sub-layers; the sub-layers are missing, so everything is in the top-level layers. Oh well, it's not the end of the world. I'm still pleased! :)

  4. Hi Hokusai!

Unfortunately, my trial has expired so I can't try again, and the last time I tried it was about a month ago, so I don't remember all the details. However, I'm pretty sure I tried the .ai file directly. As for the type suggestion, that's a good idea! I wish I could try another trial, to see if I can import it as a PDF as you suggest (I don't want to start over from scratch). As for the elements being "symbols" in Illustrator, I'm not sure if they were (I'm a novice when it comes to Illustrator), so I'm not sure what a "symbol" would actually be. Basically, I have:

    - SVG elements (each icon on the map is from an SVG, or at least the vast majority are)

    - Basic lines (paths? the coloured lines for each metro line)

    Thanks for your reply!

  5. Hi there! I'd love to purchase a license for Affinity Design, it's obviously much more affordable than Illustrator, and I liked the interface during my trial (which has now expired :( ). However, I have an AI file that Affinity wasn't able to load all the elements from. I'd like to submit this file privately, so that you guys can take a look at it, and hopefully, Affinity can then be "fixed" so that it's able to load this file. Is there a way for me to do that (submit an AI file privately for inspection)?

To have an idea of what the file involves, have a look at this PNG:

    http://mexicometro.org/wp-content/uploads/Mexico-Metro-Map-Updated-version-2015.png

As you can see, it has a lot of complex shapes in it; my problem is that most of the icons weren't loading, and a fair bit of the text, as well (it's a custom font installed on my computer). Most (all?) of the icons are originally SVG elements. The file works perfectly fine in Illustrator, though; that's where I built it originally.

    Thanks!

  6. Hi! I realize this likely seems like a very basic question, but I can't seem to solve it. I want to use the fill tool to fill in several objects with white, that are currently black. Here's the flow I would expect:

    1) Select Fill tool

    2) Select the color I want to fill in the objects (actually, I'd look for an eye dropper tool but I haven't seen one, but since all I want is pure white, the eye-dropper isn't important at the moment)

    3) Click on the object I want to make white

    4) See the object change to white

Instead, what seems to be happening is, at step 3, the White that I had configured changes to Black (the color of the object), so I need to repeat step 2 again. I have many objects to fill, so the extra clicks are somewhat annoying.

What am I missing here? :)

Bonus: Is there an eye-dropper-type tool?
