  1. Hi, I am pretty much a novice on photo editing. I currently have V1 but would like to know in broad terms, why it would be in my interest to invest in V2. Can someone provide in layman's what are the fundamental benefits that I cannot get from V1?
  2. R C-R thanks for taking the time, to point me in the right direction. I will look into the suggested tutorials.
  3. Apologies R C-R but I have not got a clue what "There are several ways to do that, including dragging that panel into its own 'slot' in the Studio or dragging it out into the workspace so it is a free floating one." means. Is there a video tutorial which would let me see how this is done?
  4. Hi Manuela, Thanks for the advice. It seems that you are moving rapidly, out of the Newbie category. I look forward to seeing the screenshot.
  5. Thanks for pointing that out. I have now viewed the Quick Mask video and understand better, the point that you made.
  6. Thanks for the suggestions. You said, For the photo you showed in your post, you can also use adjustment layers with masks to correct the different areas of the photo. Since the exposure of the background looks about right, but the people are dark, I would make a mask that allows the foreground to be adjusted with levels or curves. Or, you can duplicate the layer, mask out the background, and use the Dodge tool on the darker areas. Those are just 2 examples..." I will need to look at the tutorials to see how I can do this, as I am a complete novice, with Affinity. I did look at the video you suggested but that seems to relate to multiple shots of the same subject which can then be merged and adjusted. That does not seem to apply to my one shot example, I posted. However, I have tried the Dodge brush and that seems to have improved the picture somewhat.
  7. I have a number of photos where the subject is underexposed and the background is fine. Is there a way, to isolate an area and adjust that specific area, for exposure etc.,? Should I be using HDR for these situations? I have uploaded an example to identify my problem.
  8. Hi Alex, I think that the penny has dropped somewhat after your explanation of the difference between ticking a layer and 'selecting' one. After all that, my inpainting was not successful anyway. I have a photo of my two grandchildren at a restaurant table and I was trying to remove a rose, which seemed to me to be dominating the photo. It did not work as what surrounded the rose was too complex for the inpainting feature to cope with. Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.
  9. Hi MEB, I am puzzled as the picture shows background ticked and layers unticked, so I assumed that was correct. Managed to find the original version with no layers and the inpainting brush worked, but then I proceeded to adjust the photo again. Then I realised that the pinpointing brush needed to be used again, and once again, it does not work, I have attached the latest layers panel and would be grateful if you could point out, specifically, what I am doing wrong. It is clearly a basic error and I need to get this right if I am going to succeed with this software. Also, could you tell me if there is a simple way of comparing the original photo, to the adjusted one. I am laboriously unpicking layers to get to the original, but would like to see a side by side comparison, if such a feature exists. Thanks for your help.
  10. Hi, I am beginning to think that Affinity is too complex for my level. I do not know what has gone wrong, but I cannot make the Inpainting, Healing brushes etc.,work. I have watch the tutorials, which are brilliant and read the help guidelines, but no matter what I do the brush is not painting visibly over the area to be removed. There are so many features that I wonder whether I have clicked on something that is causing my problem. I have used the pinpointing brush before, but with limited success, however it was significantly more than I have achieved today, which is zilch! I have looked at the tutorial carefully and I notice that some icons towards the top right hand of the screen, seem to be 'greyed' out, whereas they are not in the tutorial. Also, on the right hand side, above the list of layers, the tutorial as a white dot for Opacity but mine is gray. Can someone point me in the right direction, as there is something fundamentally wrong, with what I am doing today. As requested I have tried to upload some of what was on my screen. Also the pinpointing brush was only used on the base layer (I think).
  11. Hi Alexjh I do have some Macphun editing software and it is good, but I guess, is not as comprehensive, as Affinity.
  12. Hi MEB Thanks for that. I am surprised that iPhoto and Aperture have more advanced features than Photos, I wonder what Apples thought process was there! You say,The latest Affinity Photo Beta includes six extensions for Apple Photos: Retouch, Miniaturise, Monochrome, Liquify, Develop and Dehaze which cover part of Affinity Photo functionality. Those will also be available in the next update of the Mac App Store version (before Christmas)." I am not sure what this means. I was hoping that Affinity Photo, would be a total extension, as is Pixelmator, but this sounds to be piecemeal. Am I understanding correctly?
  13. I have recently purchased Affinity and am struggling with the Import / Export process. Because Apple have abandoned Aperture I am using Photos. Does what you have described above concerning Aperture, work the same for Photos. Is there a plan to have Affinity Photo as an extension to Photos, which would be the best solution for me?
  14. Mark W/ Dave Harris Thanks for your replies to my query. Either way it seems that I will not have to wait too long to get an update.
  15. Hi p_mac, Thanks for the tip, but having downloaded from the App Store, I would presumably be compromising myself with Apple, if anything went wrong. When will the beta version be an upgrade, as I may be better to wait for that, or am I being over cautious?
  16. I have just downloaded Affinity Photo for Mac, having looked at a number of tutorials before doing so. Having travelled to China, I have a number of photos that could usefully use the Haze Removal feature. However, that does not appear when I search in the App. I guess that this is because it is still in Beta mode. Any idea, when this feature, will be incorporated into my App, or any suggestions how I can remove Haze, prior to any update. Ironic, that the first thing that I attempt to use, is not available.
  17. Hi Frank, Thanks for taking the time to let me know your respective experiences of Pixelmator and Affinity. You have convinced me that I will be very pleased with Affinity.
  18. Hi JFisher/justwilliam, Thanks for your extremely helpful and supportive comments. If this is the quality of response that you get from this forum, I am going to really enjoy it. It was much appreciated and has persuaded me to download Affinity Photo for Mac, later today.
  19. I am teetering on the edge of buying Affinity Photo for Mac, but wondering whether I will drown in the complexity and have the photographic knowledge to be able to utilise it to my advantage. I am interested in amateur photography and watercolour painting so hopefully I have some artistic bent, which might be useful. However, when it comes to photo editing terminology, I struggle! For example : Sharpen, Unsharpened and High Pass are, I understand, all means of 'sharpening' an image, but what each do, and which is the most appropriate for a given circumstance, is a mystery to me. Is this a novice issue, or is it something that will come to me, through using Affinity? I have used Aperture, Intensify etc but not Photoshop. Would Affinity Photo for Mac, help me or is it too big a jump?
