This issue still persists in AD 1.6 B1 - not a big deal but just looks kind of messy.

    Hi,
I would *really* like to have an option for Designer to default to exporting the selected area, rather than the whole document.
At present every time I want to export an object or selection (which is most of the time), I have to use the dropdown menu to change it to just export the area, and I often forget.

olibclarke got a reaction from MattP in Graphical glitch when resizing text in AD1.6b8
    Hi,
See attached movie - a ghost of the text object to be resized remains during resizing. This only happens with text (not shapes), and only when the text object is resized for the first time - subsequent resize operations do not show the same behaviour. This doesn't happen in earlier betas or the stable release.
I am using Mac OS X 10.12.6, on a 13" MBP retina, early 2015 model.
    Cheers

I do like that idea... I'll have a look...

(we tried to make it remember what the user had last selected a while ago, but it didn't work properly - I can try to fix that properly and it might be the best of all cases)

olibclarke reacted to SaucyWeeTart in Opening files in Designer Beta...
    Hey guys,

I posted about this before a while ago but I feel the need to post again because it's very irritating and I really think it should be given some attention from the dev team.

The issue is the kind of buggy relationship between the MAS/beta versions of your app. As you guys already know, during a beta cycle one might open loads of .afdesign files with it and therefore move the beta into the 'default app' list in OSX. The problem is that after the beta cycle ends and you update the MAS version, all your .afdesign files are still tied to the beta, which with a double click, sends you on a magical journey like this:

    > splash screen with an error message
    > click 'ok'
    > new tab opens in your browser to app store
    > app store then opens up on OSX
    > close window
    > close tab
    > another splash screen with 'failed to open file'
    > click ok
    > beta splash screen then freezes on screen until you right click and manually close it

What's the problem with still being able to use the beta even if it's a version behind the MAS? There must be another way to indicate that you've opened your file up in an outdated beta, other than the process above.

When I was using the Adobe Muse/Muse beta apps they functioned just fine because it was up to you where you opened your files. If you opened them in an outdated beta, fine.

Unless I'm still totally missing the point, I still consider this a problem. And a problem that makes me want to systematically end everyone in the office.

    Thanks for reading that wall,
    Stu W.

I believe the beta has been superseded by the 1.5.5 final release - a final release is another reason for the beta to become obsolete.

olibclarke got a reaction from safran64 in Arrowheads please. . .
@ronniemcbride: Well, it is a pretty basic feature. And if you need a lot of arrows for a diagram, making them one by one and adjusting the size and direction of the arrowheads on a path is kind of annoying. Nobody is using AD just for arrowheads - but they are the one, repetitive part of my workflow that is annoying in AD and easier in pretty much every other program right now. So it would be great to see them added!

Also, there is a huge opportunity for Affinity in the scientific/medical/education communities, precisely for the reason you mention - I don't need anything of great complexity (Illustrator is overkill and AD is much more intuitive to use), but I need a way to easily create clean diagrams combining images, labels, arrows and clean vector graphics to convey ideas, processes, research results etc. AD fills that hole perfectly at a very affordable price.

olibclarke got a reaction from Andrew Tang in wrong cursor appearing in color panel
Purely a cosmetic issue, but have noticed it in the last several betqs so thought I might as well report it - see attached movie. Basically when making a shape, or sometimes selecting an image or other object, then moving the cursor to the color studio panel to alter something, the cursor changes to the "horizontal resize" cursor and stays there while hovering over the studio. Doesn't change anything - the cursor still works - but it looks weird.

On a similar point, quite frequently when closing with multiple unsaved documents, AD will fail to bring the relevant unsaved document into focus - and as the rest of the interface is unresponsive when the save dialog is present, the only way to check the identity of the document to which it is referring is to dismiss the save dialog and manually change to the appropriate tab.

olibclarke got a reaction from Lojza in Cmd-drag duplicating rather than resizing (bug)
This still feels like a bug to me, or at least a kind of clunky UI decision - when hovering over a corner, with Cmd depressed, the cursor shows a resize cursor, but clicking and dragging on the corner handle instead duplicates the object.

At the very least, in this situation the cursor should give feedback as to the expected outcome - there should not be a resize cursor present, if clicking and dragging does not result in the indicated action.

    Cheers

olibclarke got a reaction from hawk in Jumpy studio panels
    Hi,

Minor quibble I guess, but I find particularly in the 1.5betas that when changing between different panels in the studio, the panels change in size and position quite a lot (see attached video, although I'm not sure it demonstrates the issue so well).

To a certain extent I imagine this is unavoidable, but the current behaviour I find quite jarring - I would prefer clicking to change to a panel and then clicking again to expand the panel if necessary,  rather than having AD rearrange the studio automatically.

By the way the 'resize around center'/measurement issue is completely fixed in beta10, thanks for that!

olibclarke reacted to Peregrin in Roughen Curves
I know I've suggested a similar feature, but all this talk of smoothing curves brought this up in my mind; in addition to a tool to smooth a curve, Affinity Designer should also have the opposite.  I am of course referring to Midpoint Displacement, which would allow illustrators to make non-uniform curves more easily than having to draw each node individually.

Being able to smooth curves is indeed important, but as it is, it's really hard to produce a line that doesn't look uniform, and a roughening tool to add pseudorandom midpoint displacement would make illustrating much less time-consuming.

    Hi,

I love all the improvements to snapping in the AD 1.5 beta! Just to be greedy, I would like to put in one further request - would it be possible to add snapping during object rotation?

In particular I am thinking of a scenario where one wants to align two objects in arbitrary orientations, both of which have straight edges. When I am rotating the second object, I would like it to optionally (maybe with shift modifer?) to snap to "key angles" - the angles where one straight edge of object 2 is parallel to a straight edge of object 1. Is this feasible?

    Keep up the good work!!

olibclarke reacted to nonresidentalien in [ADe] Align/distribute to key object: desperately needed for Scientists
    Hi guys,

I have recently switched my whole research group from using AI to using Affinity Designer. However, the thing that every single user heavily complained about, and that really limits the utility of AffinityDesigner for us, is the lack of an option to select a key or reference object that stays put during alignment and distribution operations.

This is very crucial for the preparation of scientific data plots where one really cannot have the data points shifting around when aligning them to their labels. It would also be very helpful for preparing multi-paneled figure etc.

Also, while at it, a 'select same color/stroke/fill/...' feature would be great, and the eyedropper tool could use some attention (eg. for text and vector objects)

Please make these available, and I will promise, that there will be a landslide of scientists moving away from their current overpriced rental software to using Affinity Designer

    Thanks

olibclarke reacted to Matthias in Reseting the rotational info should be permanent
I do like the new Reset Selection Box a lot. I just think resetting the rotational information should be permanent. Using it there is supposedly a reason to reset the rotational information of the element in its present state to zero. I’d argue that more often than not this reason doesn't go away after deselecting the element.

An example: I made a six sided square star which I use as part of a logo. I rotated it to 30 degrees so that it stands on one side. This is it’s final state. However, even if I convert the shape to curves it retains its initial rotational information so that everytime I select it I get a rotated bounding box. I find this distracting.

Now that there is a way to reset the box – why not make it stick?

    Cheers

    Hi,

It would be nice to have a way in Designer to automatically crop whitespace (or transparent/empty space) from the borders of imported images, rather than having to do so manually. Not a high priority I guess, but GIMP does this very well and I have found it a time saver there.

Re 1, somewhat - look up power duplicate, check out video here: http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/articles/how-to-power-duplicate-in-affinity-designer--cms-25010

It works with rotations, scaling and translations, but not mirror operations yet as far as I can tell.

Custom image based brushes are easy to generate, e.g. see links within this thread: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/11553-ad-creating-custom-textured-brushes/

olibclarke got a reaction from Gear maker in Unable to use beta after app store version updates
    Hello,

Now that the app store version has updated itself, the beta will no longer run, claiming that I do not have a purchased version of AD.

I realize that they are effectively the same at this point so it doesn't matter, but it would be convenient if the beta still worked, as otherwise every time the app store version catches up to the beta, one needs to change file associations, import custom brushes etc, and the app store version doesn't maintain the same "recent files" list.

    Cheers,
    Oliver.
