  1. ** 50% off with until 4th April 2016 with this coupon - IntroPromo ** Here's the link - https://www.udemy.com/affinityphoto-solid-foundations/ . Just underneath the box that says take this course, there's a message that says 'redeem a coupon'. Enter 'IntroPromo' in the box that pops up. So far over 4,500 of you have seen my other post about 3 tutorials for beginners - well this course goes much deeper and much further. As well as the 5 stages I spoke about on my YouTube videos (but in much more detail on the new course) I also cover tools and techniques that professionals use. I've been a designer for the best part of 30 years and in that time I've come to realise that there's a good way and a bad way to use the tools in any image editing program. It's this experience I aim to pass on to you. This is a 7.5 hour long, 50+ tutorial Affinity Photo course aimed at beginners. For an overview check this out - https://youtu.be/iSNpq01n3HQ I'm aiming to give you the knowledge and the confidence to make your photos shine. I know what it's like opening up a new and complicated program and wondering what on earth you're supposed to do. I created this course bearing that in mind. I also aimed to cover all the bases a beginner needs. Please note that I did not cover developing Raw files. The reason for that is because most beginners won't be using Raw files, so it didn't seem appropriate to charge for that. Instead I've charged less money for this course and I have the Raw development series in development now for which I'll charge a lower price upon release. So if you end up getting both, you'll end up paying the same amount you would have paid if I'd grouped them both together and charged more.
  2. It's here - https://www.udemy.com/affinityphoto-solid-foundations/ Also, until April 4th you can get the course at half price if you enter this coupon code - IntroPromo . Go to the page and just under the Take This Course box there's a 'redeem a coupon' link. Enter the code into there. I'll put a new thread up on the forum as an official announcement, but for now, if you are reading this, I hope the course serves you well.
  3. Hi everybody. Just a quick update. I've submitted the course I've been working on to www.udemy.com for approval. All being well it will be up for sale very soon. It contains just over 50 lectures and 7.5 hours of content. But if you see it before I get the chance to put a promotion code in place please hang off buying it just yet. I want to be sure you can take advantage of the 50% off the price introductory offer. I'll make an announcement on this thread and start a new one with a more appropriate title and give details then. So thanks for all the support and kind words; it has made a difference...
  4. I'm recording a series of tutorials that I'm aiming to put online at www.udemy.com and part of the course will be about layer blend modes. I'm fine with the layer blend modes that appear in Photoshop but I'm having trouble finding hard information about the ones that are special to Affinity Photo, namely the Average, Negation, Reflect, Glow, Contrast Negative, Erase modes that appear at the bottom of the list. I can take a guess as to what they do, and I have the idea that some of them may be intended to work more with brushes and/or adjustment layers than as straight pixel layers. But to do them justice I'd really like to hear about what they actually do and what they could be used for from someone who knows.
  5. ... aaand another taster video is now online! This time I'm using the clone tool and demonstrating good practices with it, as well as some pitfalls along the way. Here it is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYJuQPNGgPs . As usual, any comments or suggestions are welcome.
  6. Hi everyone, I thought I'd give a quick update on the course progress because I'm getting quite a few people asking when it will be ready. I'm aiming for a mid/late March release, although if it goes beyond that it's because I want to take enough time to get it right. I will make announcements on this forum when it's ready. But thank you very much for your interest; it's very encouraging.
  7. Hi; I've just added another taster video here: https://youtu.be/cmCVsquDBVk about creating sepia, selenium and cyanotype effects for your pictures. It will be available until Monday 28th February and then will be added to the upcoming video series to be made available at www.udemy.com. All comments welcomed.
  8. Hi, I've just released a preview video for the forthcoming tutorial series that I plan on publishing over at www.udemy.com. It's the first part of the rotating tutorials and here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WvtwM6iLOY&feature=youtu.be . So any comments at all are welcome.
  9. Thanks GeeJay. Funny things about what you said - over the years I've often been asked what software to get for blah etc. My reply has usually been along the lines of 1. How stable is it? 2. How good are it's core functions? 3. Howt many tutorials are there for it?
  10. Hi PhotoNewbie. Yes, I'll be posting here, along with anywhere I can think of where Affinity Photo users hang out. But I'll post & update on this thread or start just one more thread with an appropriate title since I don't like it on other forums for other software when people start all manner of new threads to spam their product.
  11. Hi RNKLN. No; it's not general accepted practice, just a practice I advocate with reasons that work more often than not. For example, setting the dark and light sometimes results in colors being more intense as they get darker, so I prefer to do this before color balance work. In the past when I've advocated this approach I'll also mention when color balancing that it can also change the brightness so going back and tweaking the light and dark might be a good idea. Or that you should rotate before you crop because doing so afterwards will mean you'll just have to crop again and lose more of your picture than you intended. I know that if I suggest a way of doing things there will be another point of view - if nothing else because no one approach fits every photo. But if I'm teaching a course for beginners, one of the worst feelings is to encounter a large program like Affinity Photo with no idea about what to do first. There are other approaches like fixing the biggest problem first, then the next biggest & so on but that's a more advanced approach which I'd suggest further down the learning route.
  12. Thank you to all of you who replied. It is always a pleasure to get positive feedback. DonatoF - very good points and while I've just done the overview video for the Solid Foundations series I think I'll go back & mention the splash screen. So thanks for the suggestion. Yes; it is a large undertaking so at the moment I'm leaning towards the idea of multiple smaller courses that concentrate on specifics. So a foundations course which is what I'm working on at the moment. Then a raw processing course - not everyone uses raw but those that do deserve a fuller explanation. Maybe a toolbox course covering things like artistic effects, high & low key effects & so on. There's also scope for more advanced topics like beauty techniques, restoring old photos using multiple layer masks & so on. Let's face it; there's no shortage of topics with what is already a pretty rich feature set. Breaking things up into smaller courses at a lower price point means people can get what they want rather than having to fork out good money on a course they only need part of. It also means that, with feedback, I can be more responsive to people's needs.
  13. Hi everyone, I've just put three tutorials on YouTube aimed at complete beginners, although slightly more experienced users of Affinity can get something out of the third one. So here they are: https://youtu.be/mYwjdx9FJRA- Affinity Photo Tutorial for Beginners - 101 - don't panic! https://youtu.be/_sbuSNiiZWc- Affinity Photo Tutorial for Beginners - 102 - What is a Layer? https://youtu.be/aWx4X-Nes-s- Affinity Photo Beginners 103 - 5 Essential Photo Editing Steps If they are of some use to you then it's all good. Cheers, Simon Foster
