Hi skiphunt,
Do the following:
- in Plug- Search Folders, set the path to /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC 2015/Plug-ins (yo may need to adapt the path depending on the version of Photoshop you have installed);
- Then click Authorise Global and again Authorise in the new dialog that will open;
- tick Allow Unknown plug-ins to be used;
- press Close and restart Affinity Photo.

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
This is by design. Affinity Photo doesn't overwrite PSD's to avoid damaging original files due to features we do not support or are poorly documented on PSD's spec.
Currently the best option is to use the TIFF format. Soon we will add support for layered TIFF's too.

This sounds like potentially a connection issue or Apple are having some trouble on their end, give it some time and try the update again.

I had this trouble. It took me three or four attempts each at upgrading Designer and Photo. Even then it was a far from smooth trouble free process. But all good now.
