Bit Dissapointed reacted to Joe S. in How to use the new pixel grid & move/duplicate tool?
I could have sworn that I saw both icons on the What's New page. However, I have ADHD so my brain might have made it up 🤷🏽‍♂️
I have yet to find a single app with desktop & iPad versions where they nailed the UI for touch but Affinity has done a great job. Clip Studio Paint impressively ported their entire desktop app to iPad but ridiculously kept the same interface with some touch modifier options - and then added a dumbed down touch only interface for sketching this year.
What I'm finding out about the Affinity apps is that they are MUCH more touch enabled than I thought. I watched half of a youtube vid on Designer touch gestures this morning and came away shocked that there's much more there than I thought or had tried. I really need to go through the entire manual to get a better handle of what's possible.
That being said, I hope the Move Data Entry improvements come to the iPad eventually to maintain feature parity. Being creative on the go is such a boon, despite the distinct advantages of the desktop.

    @loukash
Thanks for your input, but these solutions require more steps than I think should be necessary.
My post is about discussing, how we could skip there extra steps and having things to happen more automatically.

I disagree. It isn't bad in its current state, but I still think Affinity's settings is rather oversimplified. I prefer to have more control, rather than "fewer things to be bothered with". However, at this point this is an individual preference. This is why some people prefer iPhones and some prefer Android.

You're certainly not the only one. I've been about to request something similar many, many times. In my work, it's also incredibly rare that the copy needs to be inserted above the original.
For the same reason I miss a "Paste Behind" keyboard shortcut so I don't have to use the Move Back One shortcut every time I copy paste something.
I think the Layer -> Insertion option should apply to copies and duplicates as well. And possibly that this setting is remembered between sessions.

I make things appear like real things - and use FX for what I assume they were invented for, because they mimic every single real-life characteristic alone or in combination. As far as I know, they originated in Photoshop or similar programs. At least that's where I first used them. Most of the objects need at bit of FX to not look like dull flat vector graphics.
Anyway, most of all I simply need the program to present me with the settings I use the most, not to force me to use extra steps all day long.

Um… is there anything wrong with Layer → Arrange → Move To Front / Back…?

When cloning multiple selected items in Layer hierarchy, the copy will simply duplicate above each item individually.
What I would prefer is that the items would keep their order and wouldn't mix with the other "group", so I can for example duplicate a UI button with text and icon on it in the same order.
    Setup:

    How it works now:

    What I would prefer:

    Current workarounds:
A: Right after cloning press CTRL+G to group them, then release them from the group and delete the empty group.
B: Drag them with the mouse somewhere and then back. Can't always do it right above though.

I believe this could be more intuitive. I know I can also solve it by putting everything in Groups, but sometimes I don't want to have nested groups everywhere.
I can also imagine that this could become problematic if the cloning layers have other layers between them...
Perhaps there could be a new shortcut, that would "smash" all selected layers to the upmost/downmost (<- is that a word?) layer? Maybe users would use it even in different cases!

Please, add an toggle somewhere, so that hitting CTRL+J (duplicate layer) or copy/paste would create copy BELOW the original layer in hierarchy, not above.
I usually work my UI design from top to the bottom.

Thanks for considering! I believe I am not the only one
(please do not post obvious workarounds like shortcuts etc. I am using those currently. I actually use them every single time, because I 99% of time want to clone downwards)

I spend a huge amount of time over the year and even over a working day changing defaults in the FX window. The assumption of the user interface is obviously that this is functionality only used occasionally by the customer, but the opposite can very much be the case.
For example, I change the Bevel & Emboss type from Pillow to Inner every time I use it. Thousands of times over time. This makes using Designer on the iPad a particular pain in the arse.
Could it be possible for this dialogue to have a menu with options such as Set as default and Reset to defeaults (in a suitable place on the iPad as well).
Then you could perhaps also save Scale with object as default. 🙂
I know about workarounds, styles etc. but am looking for a non-workaround based solution.
    Thank you for this. 🙂

These decisions shouldn't be made by lead developers. They should be made by people responsible for workflows and the entire user interface (one type of specialist) and implemented by other specialists. If lead developers are making these decisions, Serif is not working in a professional and up-to-date manner. Then they are decades behind on that particular point.
There may be architectural reasons why something desired cannot be implemented or must be done later.  But it's specialised professions and roles (!!!!) that ensure these things in product development. Software or not.
But, sorry, I've been a customer since 2007, I've seen these things overlooked, lost in updates, inconsistent and then fixed later via user feedback. And it can happen on iPadOS alone, where Serif needs a reminder before it's included there as well.
And very often it seems that it's not included because the idea hasn't been thought through, the workflow hasn't been thought through and tested. This has permeated my impression since 2007 based on my direct experience with the company, their development and updates and the products as such. And through comparison with other products and their development and user interface.
Ensuring these things in product development is essential from the start, as processes and roles become critical ingredients as you get further into the product's life, with complexity and dependencies steadily increasing. The user interface is often the first casualty.

There is more to his work than algorithms, also add a great creative mind, skills and a mix of methods. Combining methods and figuring out which and when is the hardest part but also where one learns a lot. I don't think Hayley covered this part - her work was just a mechanical proof of concept, not the work of an artist.
The effect could be created in many programs, content-aware fill/inpaitning will make the least part of it a bit easier.

Yes, a double click will make it a floating 2-column toolbox, which I think is the default config in "floating mode".

This worked, thank you! I was able to add this and other tools I was unaware I have been missing out on.
I have never before configured my toolbox. Developers, It would make sense for a toolbox with default settings to update to the current default configuration with each new version of the software.

Yes, it is possible to create this effect with Affinity Photo.
As with Adopay Photoscrap, there is also motion blur in Affinity Photo.

Bit Dissapointed reacted to MikeTO in Unofficial PDF Manual - Expert Guide to Affinity Publisher
New version! I have uploaded a new version of this unofficial Publisher manual to the first post of this thread. In addition to being updated for the changes in Publisher 2.3, this version covers character and paragraph formatting, text styles, and all the other text-related features. It is 120 pages longer than the original version.
Although it's written for Publisher, most of the text features are the same for Designer or Photo so you may find it useful for the other Affinity applications, too.
    Cheers

Just a quick unscientific example of how the paragraph composer in InDesign CC 2021 helps with its even most basic default settings. The document was quickly created in InDesign without any tweaks - just default settings. Then saved as IDML and opened in Publisher 1.9, beta 452.
First row InDesign Second row Publisher, default settings, as is Third row Publisher with "prevent widowed first lines" ticked 1. Notice the tightly composed and well balanced boxes of text (inDesign) 2. Notice the widowed first line in second box (Publisher) 3. Notice the sudden white blank area in box one bottom part - entire lines moved - no balancing of content performed (It looks horrible) (Publisher) You can waste half your life tweaking, fixing and "debugging" layout in simple or buggy software. I retired PagePlus and skipped Publisher for some minor documents made in a professional context (I used PagePlus just to try some other programs and add spice to my work life). Ten years later I just haven't got time for unnecessary tweaking or software shortcomings. Publisher is not a candidate for my work until it actively helps me.
Deadline close, knee deep in minor issues like 2. and 3..... no thank you. Never again.
So before Serif makes their own paragraph composer engine - I'll pass on Publisher. But I cannot imagine they won't. I would be delighted to participate in the work if I was them. It is not just adding buttons and straightforward to understand features to the product. Trying to add aesthetics, balance, automatic solving of classic minor issues and "layout wisdom" to software sounds more interesting than much I have tried and heard of for a long time.
And... it can really really be seen when it works. Pages just look... natural. Pleasing.

I was hoping V2 of Publisher would provide an equivalent of the Adobe Paragraph Composer found in Indesign, so that I could switch to Publisher for layout and typesetting. Unfortunately it does not. I find the feature saves a huge amount of time in typesetting long works of justified text, books in my case--very little manual tweaking needed. The extra cost of the annual subscription for Indesign is far out-weighed by the extra efficiency afforded by the paragraph composer.

I recommend lifting the criticality on this bug and bumping it.
Currently I am working on an extremely complex design so I use all the tricks I can to reduce the load on my mac. Setting view quality to nearest neighbour helps but I have to alter the preference every time I start Affinity which is incredibly annoying.
I can also disable FX of course - but that is too drastic a measure for many tasks.

OK, I better spend some time elaborating on the image. 🙂 It was generated for the occasion by AI. I should have added some context but felt I had already wasted too much of my life screening the thread and I had some private life to live and also work to do, so I chose the JPG. The "Bored, I am leaving" was not for anto but the automatically triggered responses from a group of people not related to Serif.
I very much value feedback from @anto and other frustrated customers.
I'm completely indifferent and actually downright repulsed by generic and guaranteed responses and comments from - well, who the hell are they? It's rhetorical polyfilla. The whole thing is a complete waste of time and life. And unfortunately also for customers like anto who come here in frustration.
I can easily empathise with your argument, mood and list of issues, I've been following Serif's choices and opt-outs for over a decade and I'm resigned to all of this. I have really had a breakthrough in my creativity in spite of everything in the last year, but have given up on anything other than submitting improvement requests on an ongoing basis - inspired by others. Serif has read it all hundreds of times, and I don't think one or fifty more posts will change anything in the company after decades in the industry. They develop as usual, making the same mistakes I've seen since 2007. It's sad enough - but what's worse is that they don't fully realise the potential inherent in the concept behind the three programs.
If you're creative and passionate, possibilities are everywhere, and there's nothing more foolish than wasting time on futile deeds in that scenario. My time is best invested in creating and spending my time in the real world. I've found a niche for Affinity, but I haven't found a place in my life for forum-filla.
    I wish you a day of creativity. 🧑‍🎨 🎨
