Bit Dissapointed reacted to TrentL in Affinity Designer Adding 1 Pixel in Slice Export
Yes, I understand that it can be fixed, but the fact that it has to be fixed is puzzling. Every person who ever uses 2+ artboards and the Export Persona is going to have this problem the first time and they likely won't even notice it at first. The only reason I noticed it is because I have been burned many times with stock graphics from asset libraries that have a hairline seam down the side, so I always do a spot-check of my exports.
I personally don't know why fractional pixels are even needed. It seems like an incredibly niche use-case that causes more problems than it solves.

Bit Dissapointed reacted to bobbybosler in Enable transparency tool to affect child objects in Designer mode
See this topic. I had assumed that the fact that the transparency tool didn't apply to shape-masked objects was a bug, but apparently it's how designer works. I think it is somewhat counter-intuitive that the transparency tool does not affect the contents of a shape mask. I would like to suggest that it does.
I guess InDesign allows for such a thing, and it would be great to have that ability in Designer (without having to use pixel masks). I would make numerous workflows much more efficient and would make maintenance easier as well.

Bit Dissapointed got a reaction from Grow Genius in Why is "Preferences" called "Settings" - or is it ?
Semantically, there is a difference between the two terms, but it's all mixed up when both types of settings are mixed, and the highest instance to be listened to is the guidelines for the current operating system.
Historically, these terms have been thrown into software by different companies and by engineers, so it would be nice if terms for functionality stabilised around true, real-world semantics. But as I said, it's all a mix of this and that in the settings in Affinity and many applications, so it can end up in endless discussions. Good thing Apple has chosen.

Bit Dissapointed reacted to _Th in ALT F4 Closes Panels. It Should Only Close the App.
Application?
All (Designer/Photo/Publisher)
Latest Version?
Yes (2.3.0.2165)
Reproducible?
Yes
Happen for New Document?
Yes
OS?
Windows 11 (23H2) 10.0.22631, 11th Gen i7, 16GB RAM
Hardware Acceleration?
On
What Happens?
If the last thing you've 'touched' is any detached/floating panel, the default Windows keyboard shortcut to close a program, ALT F4, closes the panel instead.
What's Expected?
ALT-F4 should *only* close the program, never a panel or just a document.
To Reproduce?
Create new document. Have at least one panel detached/floating. Click on that panel. Type ALT + F4
Unusual Hardware?
None
Work Before?
I believe this existed in v1.x
Recent Changes?
None

I mistakenly posted this originally under Feedback. I see that as the post author, I can hide that. Not sure if that's preferred or not. (Not trying to double post an issue. Rather, posting here as a bug report as suggested.)

Bit Dissapointed reacted to debraspicher in ALT F4 Closes Palettes—Should Only Close the App
And there's a shortcut for accessing those so that helps... they do try to help us where they can with keyboarding options...
This is certainly not default behavior for Windows. Ctrl + F4 would be expected to close a window, whereas Alt + F4 would close the program. Ctrl + F4 would be better suited for closing a tab/window, not a panel, I would think semantically...

You're making a bell ring. I often link to other items and I've experienced strange things, but have been too busy to go in-depth and look for a pattern.
But it sounds very familiar. Also on the iPad Pro.

Bit Dissapointed got a reaction from debraspicher in Opacity doesn't work if an outline has been added.
I use the Outline FX very rarely, but I have a feeling it needs an annual check-up. I've often seen it work very unusually with other effects, so I instinctively don't use it, and only on its own, and I wouldn't be surprised if outline also works awkwardly with transparency.
I haven't bothered to report bugs or anything else on it here, there has been so much else.

Bit Dissapointed got a reaction from debraspicher in One year later and still no changes to the frustrating UI...
Rubbish. Read it again. Serif still doesn't get it. They are looking for a developer with UI skills? Let's just refresh the facts:
I have no idea why Serif so stubbornly avoids modern software development, but the result of this stubbornness is something customers complain about again and again and again, and we all pay the price.
The person will be responsible for programming elements of the user interface and should have experience in this area - but a usability specialist is not being advertised for.
You will get... more of the same. It's clearly stated in that job posting.

Hopefully it will make it into 2.4 since it did not make into 2.3 because of the shorter beta cycles.

Bit Dissapointed got a reaction from tzvi20 in Feature Request: Opacity option for Move/Duplicate Dialog
I can easily imagine that there is a demand for this, but now I think it would be best if Serif gets it all organised in a real blend tool, which I also imagine is their actual plan.

I would also really appreciate an iPhone Version - like Vectonator or Logoist which work as well on iPhone. Sure it makes no sense to have all features but a compatible and reduced version for some quick workflows would be awesome!

Bit Dissapointed reacted to Critical0G in Affinity Designer Node Tool icon redesign rethink iOS specifically (as you can simply hover on desktop & Mac)
Hi there
I’m not sure if this is just me or not although I have an issue working with nodes. I wouldn’t really call this a bug more like a UI issue.
i work with nodes a lot as I like to draw vector art however a lot of my time is taken up trying to remember which icon is close, break, split etc.
so after i select a node and I want to split it for example, I’ll usually have to perform undo a few times before I hit the correct icon, I know it tells you after the fact although the amount of nodes in a drawing seriously affects my performance time and I could get everything done a lot quicker if the icons had a clue, said the names on them instead of icons that are very similar or maybe just initials like C, B & S blended in at the beginning of the icon graphic?
i have a TBI (frontal lobe brain injury), and unfortunately I cannot learn the icons or the order as I just forget each time making me tap what I think is split to get a close then two finger tap to undo then I might even get close again and finally usually after quite a few attempts for one node I’ve wasted so much time when I could be drawing. I estimate a drawing that takes me 4 hours would probably take me 2/3.
it would be great if you could consider this and add alternative icons under accessibility or do something like I mentioned above, as it drives me even more insane.
thanks
Shane

Bit Dissapointed reacted to Critical0G in Affinity Designer Node Tool icon redesign rethink iOS specifically (as you can simply hover on desktop & Mac)
That’s correct it is for the iPad version so I can’t adjust that setting as it doesn’t exist although it would do no good anyway as I would still have to tap an icon to get the tooltip to show and yes including text labels would be good but as you say this would make the toolbar longer I would be happy with the first letter of each tool in uppercase as a background to the tool with a low opacity then the icon over this that would be an easy update and it could also be added in settings general or accessibility would probably be more appropriate then a button for show background node initials or something. And yes I could use the tooltip button but again this is time wasting, hopefully something can be done about it, it’s very frustrating especially when I’m on a roll…
thanks anyway…
Affinity (Serif), what do you say is this an option that could be included? I used to develop for Apple until IAP and tracking took over the store then I pulled my apps as the changes from the early days were too much for me to deal with. I would never have dreamed of charging people twice not to mention track their every movement although thankfully Apple have now done something about the tracking but they still bump apps with IAP as they make more money from their 30%, I had a one time payment for my main app which was on the store from 2011 till 2018, anyways what I mean to say is that it would take maybe an hour or so to edit the icons and minutes to implement and it would be very much appreciated.
I can even do the icons for you if you like then when someone presses that hey help me out a bit here button in settings all you’d have to do is code to swap the icons out with the ones with a big initial as the background with an if or a case statement along with a few booleans and bosh done…
Kinda like this (needs a few adjustments although as stated only took about an hour and I’ve got brain damage ;)…

Bit Dissapointed reacted to garrettm30 in Locating missing resource sometimes fails to relocate all instances
When I open a file that has a missing resource, and that missing resource is placed multiple times, if I select the option to relocate the resource, it fixes some of the instances but not all.
I have prepared a pair of demonstration files used in the recipe and video below:
Relink Problem.zip
Recipe
Open replace-linked-problem.aftemplate that I provided. At the “Missing Resource(s)” notice, click Yes. Select the provided renamed_file.afpub and click Open. Wait a moment for preflight to update, then consult the preflight errors. Result: There are several errors of missing resources, but the exact number is different each time. The same file was placed 9 times. Some of the instances of the linked file are fine, while some instances of the same file are still missing.
Demonstration
relinking-problem.mp4 Environment
This was tested on a 2019 27″ iMac, 3.7 GHz 6-core i5, 24 GB RAM, macOS Ventura 13.6.
Publisher 2.3.0 was used in the demo video, though I know the issue dates back at least as far as 2.1.1. I have an automated workflow that this has affected that used to work properly, but it started to have this issue continuously sometime in the earlier versions of Affinity 2.

Does not memorize last folder you saved an image to.
After restart you have to dig through your folders again.
Every other tool memorize the last used folders in the combo box in the save/open file dialog.
Raw development cannot be easily stopped for exit.
You have to exit raw developement first and afterwards to confirm again. This is annyoing.
You cannot save raw development progress.
In raw development, only simple gradient layers. No radial or ellipse.
GUI is slow.
It is really slow and not always responsive.
Sometime I have to choose my pen 3 times till it really gets selected. And window, canvas refresh... all is slow.
Using GTX1050, having 16GB RAM on a i7 Intel 4x 2.2 GHz machine.
Slices tool. No (magnet) alignment of slices available.
No color/luminance range selection. Only poor color picking with tolerance. Does not work most of the times.

Bit Dissapointed reacted to Jowday in What I really hate on Affinity Photo
Sigh. A new low. Believe it or not, some people actually learn and produce without living their life on a forum.
I used Adobe for decades without a single post on the Adobe forums. But I did read a lot. And followed tutorials. I never had to post anything. Plenty of knowledge out there and plenty of features in Adobe CC. I believe @Nikon Shooter did the same.
But why are you questioning him and his honesty, Internet Judge Alain P. ? I often see many users here as member of a semi-religious cult rather than a user base of creatives. Question the product and the usual responses pop up. Some users here could use auto replies posted by first generation chat bot tech. Would probably save them for several hours a week. The replies doesn't help Serif or the product development by the way.

Bit Dissapointed reacted to lacerto in One year later and still no changes to the frustrating UI...
When I recently cleaned my MacBook Air and clean-installed Ventura, then upgraded to Sonoma, I noticed that when using Apple Magic Mouse (which effectively also hides mouse buttons, and enables "secondary" button only by a non-default user choice), auto-exposing scroll bars on mouse-over event does not work!
Fortunately they still offer "always on" option for having these oh so highly disturbing (very narrow and dimmed) UI elements visible as part of the (still visible) window contours!
On the other hand, that tendency seems to be balanced by offering title bars that are a kind of a UI joke. There is so much crammed activity on modern app title bars (especially on Windows), that there is barely room for the title itself, or grabbing and moving the window (some apps allow doing that by a way of grabbing a control that exists there, some by grabbing a random narrow empty spots that exist between these controls)...
Both these tendencies (excessive minimalism and excessive clutter) cause usability issues, but at the same time, also appear to be work of UI "specialists" whose job it is to develop UI, rethink and improve the "user experience", and they seem to have the final word.
Yes yes: grumpy old guys complaining because of bad eyesight and shaky hands not willing to learn any new things 🙂

Hi, guys,
It's been a year and some updates along the way but still no changes to the UI. No one at Affinity apparently listens...
I don't know how about you but I am used to work in the light UI. I bought the Suite 2 basically the day it went live. And in the past year I only used it like five times. I still cannot get over the horrible interface changes. OK, I could probably live with ugly and childish icons. I could probably (but most likely not) get over the New Document window and Export window with its totally useless first page preview which takes ages to generate.
But the absolute lack of decent contrast and the incomprehensible change from nice blue accents towards dark shades of grey makes the light interface unusable for me. I don't want to use the dark one (which is still better in the old versions) so for now I will stick to Version 1 for as long as I can.
Check the screenshots - how am I supposed to read the names of the layers when they're nearly invisible, for example?
I just thought this UI mess would be addressed during the last year...

@Bit Arts I absolutely agree with all you just said.
This is the real world situation where you often simply don't have other choice.
It can totally be done elegantly

Bit Dissapointed got a reaction from Rudolphus in Show HEX value next to EVERY color picker?
I need that and a little more.
It's an oversimplification of reality to say that hex values are mostly for web graphics. Like it or not, it has also become a colour exchange format that I encounter just as often as RGB. In addition, there are many palette generators (e.g. create palette from jpg) and other places where you only get hex. So that's what you have.
So I often find myself in the scenario where I get a colour value in a non-optional format, very often HEX and RGB, sometimes CMYK, values I copy from a PDF or the web and need to paste into Designer. And then apply them from there. So there are other scenarios than those where you have to use, for example, exact CMYK colour values.
I have often missed a functionality where you can enter or paste a colour value in hex, rgb or cmyk, which in the worst case must be approximated by Designer - Serif should feel free to notify and warn me that the entered/pasted value is approximated in the selected colour space by Designer and may differ from what is desired. It can be done elegantly.
It's a need I have in ALL colour selectors and swatches too, and regardless of whether I use HSL, wheel or anything else. Now that Serif has parsers for math in input fields and also supports regular expression in search and replace, it's time to support color codes in such functionality as well. But it can be done in several ways.
I also think it should be basic functionality for all of us who work with programs and data from a world much bigger than Affinity. Beyond that, it's just a functionality that is gentlemanly and value-adding.
