I love what the Affinity Publisher has done with Decorations Paragraph Attribute. I didn't expect this to be in the initial beta release.
Experimenting with this a little I realised that the fill attribute is somehow coupled to the stroke attributes. If I change the position of the stroke the fill moves with it.
I would suggest to decouple the fill from the stroke so that the  stroke lines can be moved without affecting the dimensions of the fill.
If that were possible there are enormous design possibilities there.
Imagine you have a dark fill with a light stroke inside the fill or 2 horizontal lines at the top or below the text but inside the fill.
Combine the stroke attributes with the pressure attributes, the mind boggles with possibilities.

Apologies if this was started already as a suggestion.
I think that Export Persona should be very useful in Publisher. Imagine trying to negotiate various PDF export options.
Being able to PDF only certain pages or exporting pages in other formats would really be great.
I know that we have Export command but Export Persona would act as some sort of Presets for a variety of exporting options.
This should be a low-hanging fruit for the dev. team as most of the functionality already exists in Export Persona in Designer and Photo.

In playing around in recreating a template I currently use in InDesign, I noticed there's no option to set up Text Styles to align the text towards/away from the spine. This would be a hugely helpful for setting layout for large multi-page documents!

In the Paragraph Styles panel under Paragraph/Spacing you can set the Alignment to the following:
Left Center Right Justify Last Line Left Justify Last Line Center Justify Last Line Right Justify All It would be nice to see the following:
Away from Spine Toward Spine It is needed (for me) in instances where i am working with headers/footers primarily, and for other layouts when putting together books for art exhibitions etc.

InDesign has the ability to add character-level styles to strings/patterns in paragraph styles, which is an extremely powerful and time-saving function. I would love to see this implemented in Publisher.
    Beta looks great so far!

    Thank you.
The wait is finally over and we can start testing it and asking for additional features.
However, I am extremely happy and surprised that a lot of stuff like the Table of Contents and Baselines Grid are part of the initial beta release. This bodes well for the future.

We just have to wait and see for Affinity Publisher to experiment with the way it handles styles.
But I couldn't agree more with Petar that ID styles are rather sweet.

    Hi,
very positively surprised of the new Forum look and the additional info. Finally, there is some info about Publisher and here are my requests regarding it:
    1. Master pages must have the same funcionality like those one in Quark. It means that you can select, edit, move, delete... them on the workout pages. If you don't want some of them to be editable, movable... it can be done on master page(s).
    2. Paragraph and Character styles should work the same way like in InDesign. Characters attributes are part of the Paragraph Styles and can be, also, defined in Character Styles. Why is this so much important?
If you have some words in a paragraph with local formating (bold, italic...) and you ALT click on a paragraph style, these local formating will be lost. If you create a character style with style "Bold" and all other attributes are left as "------" or "None", then whenever you change the font in paragraph style, the text formated with this character style will take the same font and ALT click on a paragraph style won't change it.. If you create a character style with font "Myriad Pro" and style "Bold" and all other attributes are left as "------" or "None", then whenever you change the font in paragraph style, the text formated with this character style will always be Myriad Pro Bold and ALT click on a paragraph style won't change it. Quark's Paragraph and Character styles are very confusing to work with.

Yes, this has been asked for a numbers of times already but it's always good to hear it again. In other words we need it. QuarkXpress 2018 will add JavaScript for cross platform scripting.
This is great news for QuarkXpress users.

    Hi Danile Gibert,
It unrealistic to expect all that from the word go. I also use inDesign for my work and I need all those features to be effective in what I do.
I would also add automation. To be honest I don't expect Affinity Publisher to be ready for that kind of work any time soon - 5 years from now or more.

What I would love to see though is for the developers to release an early Alpha release for us to start testing it and giving the developers an early feedback about features that work and features that can be improved upon. I don't care if it crashes every 5 mins or so. I think that would be super cool.

Seneca got a reaction from HDoowop in Is there a way to convert this illustrator template into an affinity designer template
    Hello HDoowop,
Yes you can if you have Adobe Illustrator on your computer.

Just open the file in Illustrator.
Then select all by pressing Command + A (Control A windows).
    Switch to Affinity Designer.
Then do  File -> New From Clipboard.
    And there you have it.

    Hello Yogi9409,
Unfortunately, you are wrong. This SerifPlus line was actually not profitable at all. That's why the decision was made to start a new product Affinity.
If you search these forums a bit you will find that (by their own admission) the new line is at 10 times as much profitable and that was even before they decided to develop the Affinity Products for windows.

Another reason to not develop the SerifPlus line any longer was a very old code-base, meaning, too much effort would have to be spent to modernise it, so better start from scratch. And so the decision was made to start afresh.

Everybody is a bit impatient regarding the Publisher but there is nothing we can do except wait.

I'm not sure what you mean.

We don't need a dumbed down version of inDesign. We need a Desktop Publishing application that beats inDesign.
While inDesign may be daunting to you it's geared towards a professional market and we need a professional application to do that.

There is nothing near in the market at the moment that rivals inDesign for its depth etc., when it comes to professional publishing.
That's why we need Publisher to rival that and not something that dumbs it down.

Apple Macintosh + Adobe Laser Writer + Aldus PageMaker were the pillars of the Desktop Publishing Revolution.

This is how I started my love affair with the digital publishing all those years ago and I will always cherish these products and memories.
As far as I am concerned they were great. We can criticise them all we want but they were seminal in this category.

Let's hope that Affinity Publisher can push the envelope further, standing on the shoulders of the giants such as Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXpress, inDesign and give the tools the modern digital publishing industry needs today.

Hopefully we won't have to wait for it for too long now.  :P
