I don't think I agree with your assessment here. I much prefer the way inDesign handles the Master Page objects. To me it's much more logical. By the way to detach an object from the Maser page layout in inDesign Command+Shift + click on the area where the object is located and that objects will be detached from the Master and placed on the page you are in. Simple and intuitive as far as I am concerned. QuarkXPress pollutes the pages with objects from the Master Pages and is very messy. Regards

Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 4)
Seneca replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
Thank you for the latest 1.5 beta 4. 1. I find Media Browser quite useful but it's extremely underpowered. I have a number of files in EPS format. These files are not listed when selecting the folder these files are in through the media browser. I also have a lot of files in SVG format. These files are visible when selecting the folder they are in but the thumbnail representation is not drawn. Only the greyed out icons with a name is visible which is better than above. Files in jpg format are visible and their icons and names are displayed correctly. 2. Also when I drag an SVG file from the media browser onto the page and then click EDIT DOCUMENT button the application crashes. That's in the latest 1.5 beta 4. The button might need to be greyed out to avoid that from happening. 3. Will Affinity Designer ever be able to open .ps files? Being a vector based program I think it's a shame that it cannot do it at the moment. Best regards -

Minor issues concerning the Text Styles. I don't want to pester you with the issues I reported earlier but 1. Heirachical has not been renamed to Hierarchical (I assume that's the intent) 2. Create Style menu to possibly to be renamed to Create Object Style There is a minor thingy with Import Styles… options. It offers to import styles from EPS, PDF and possibly other file formats. I suspect the only file format that it knows how to deal with is .afdesign THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE -
Affinity Designer 1.5 sneak peek: Constraints and Symbols
Seneca replied to MEB's topic in News and Information
I'm not sure what you mean. We don't need a dumbed down version of inDesign. We need a Desktop Publishing application that beats inDesign. While inDesign may be daunting to you it's geared towards a professional market and we need a professional application to do that. There is nothing near in the market at the moment that rivals inDesign for its depth etc., when it comes to professional publishing. That's why we need Publisher to rival that and not something that dumbs it down. -
Hopefully soon. Long overdue, me thinks.

Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 1)
Seneca replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
Absolutely, I was just trying to think of a situation in which it could be used. As a general rule I prefer to keep them separate but I'm sure there will be times when this will be useful. I actually think that it might be very useful to display the Base name in the menus as a main entry and all styles derived from this as subenus. So for example one could create a Base style named Headings and this could be an entry in the menu and Heading 1, Heading 2, etc could be displayed in a submenu because they are derived from Headings which is a base style. A simple tick box next to the Base style whether it should be displayed in the menus would be perfect. Another idea that came to my mind and that comes from CSS is to have collapsable spaces. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about here. Just a thought. Again, thanks for taking time to respond to my queries, very appreciated. I really want the styles in Affinity Designer to be top class, in fact the best in its class. Regards -
Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 1)

I really think this is a very good idea. I found myself re-defining Character Styles a number of occasions just because I changed a fond and Bold, Italic, etc wouldn't hold true anymore. Thanks -

Thank you for such an exhaustive answer, I'm struggling to understand the rationale behind it though. Why would anyone want to apply a paragraph style to a character? Paragraph styles affect the appearance of the whole paragraph, so if you apply Heading 1, you will only apply bold and size, and possibly colour to the selected letters. The other characteristics like centre text are left arbitrarily out of the equation. This might be very confusing. If in the future you want to add search and replace character/paragraph styles from one style to another this may prove problematic too. I hope I am wrong here. I like the fact that we can create Base styles. This may be extremely useful for grouping of styles as you suggest or it may prove very useful for importing CSS styles (if that facility is provided) to the project. I refer to this as "contextual styles" because for example a style may have a number of Heading 1's depending where in style hierarchy it is in. It would be great if you could briefly describe "Figures" in the Text Styles. Thanks, -

Would you care to explain what the Group in the Edit Text Style Dialog mean? Also what's does the Show in both panels check box mean? At this stage we have 2 types of Styles: Text Styles and Styles for objects. This may be confusing to fresh starters. I was confused myself when I selected a word and right mouse clicked on it then got a pop-up menu with Define Style available. Maybe this should be dimmed as it's not applicable to text. This goes for the Edit menu too. -
Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 1)
Seneca replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
Thanks for Paragraph and Character Styles. First a bug. It happens when you want to update the Paragraph Style. Right-mouse click on the name of the style to get a pop-up menu to "Update Style from Paragraph. The same crash happens when you access the same menu from the menu next to the name of the style and ask to Update the style. There word Heirechical is misspelled on the Pop-up menu at the right of the Text Styles palette. It's great to have such a feature rich styles as the initial release. However, I think it would be great if you could also add: 1. Styles for a ruler above and ruler below. 2. Nested Styles 3. Grep Styles I know you might want to include these 3 in the Affinity Publisher but it would be great to have them here as well. I feel we should also have Show invisible Characters. This feature is invaluable for me when scanning text for double spaces, etc. I'm not sure how the developers feel about adding Object Style to the mix. This is it for now. I'm sure I will have more to say when I play with the Styles a bit more. And of course a big thank you for this release. -

Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.4.2 - RC1)

MattP wrote: Is this such a frequent problem that it can't be worked around (i.e. by just making the artboard in the first place?) I think this is a bit of an edge case. I suggest we just wait for 1.5 beta and do the necessary nitty gritty there. Best regards -
Development Status - Where is Affinity 1.5 Beta?
Seneca replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
Hello CartoonMike, I think the community has given a lot of a lot of consideration and patience over the last 4-5 months. -
A batch processing facility can be useful in applications like Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer but for Affinity Publisher we really need proper scripting system (see inDesign) to automate our workflows. Also, a proper plug-in architecture is a must too. So in other words, if Publisher is to become a "professional" tool these things are a must. If you are unsure what we are talking about here please search for terms like scripting/automation/plug-ins in this forum to realise what people here have been asking for. Regards

Same here!

hifred, You should expect that. This is a mac forum and not a mixed one. I'm sure once the windows betas start to appear and there will be more mac-windows posts, things will change. So far this has been a Mac only forum. Chill. PS: Your example of 3D software proves nothing. I remember the time when all apps were written for Mac only as the windows was till a joke to use. ;) ;)

Guys, Nobody is criticising Serif. Diller expressed his disappointment at the lack of progress in regards to the Publisher. He is not bashing the developers, or anything like that. He realised that for professional work he still needs adobe and he'd rather stay there for another while (hopefully, I'm not putting my words into his mouth). I only hope that he comes back when the platform matures. Peace. :) :) :)
