Affinity Publisher
Seneca replied to Yogi9409's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Apple Macintosh + Adobe Laser Writer + Aldus PageMaker were the pillars of the Desktop Publishing Revolution. This is how I started my love affair with the digital publishing all those years ago and I will always cherish these products and memories. As far as I am concerned they were great. We can criticise them all we want but they were seminal in this category. Let's hope that Affinity Publisher can push the envelope further, standing on the shoulders of the giants such as Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXpress, inDesign and give the tools the modern digital publishing industry needs today. Hopefully we won't have to wait for it for too long now. :P -

Affinity Publisher
Seneca replied to Yogi9409's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Ups, I meant to say VivaDesigner. I have subscribed to their newsletter on their website and so far didn't get anything. I'm not complaining about it. I'm just narrating my experience. Regards -
Affinity Publisher
Seneca replied to Yogi9409's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
Same here. Never heard of VivaPublisher before Oval mentioned it on this forum. Even iCalamus escaped my attention in spite of me being in the publishing business for donkeys years. I have subscribed to their (VivaPublisher) newsletter, asked for more information about its Scripting engine, which pricked my ears when I read about it, and guess what, never heard from them since. So, they either don't care or have a very small team and cannot cope. But I concur with what Petar is saying. I hope that the Affinity team is willing to test all these programs and make their own stamp on all these features when working on the Publisher. Regards -
[PUBLISHER] Some new suggestions
Seneca replied to Petar Petrenko's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
That's true, but: 1. Once the Mac alpha/beta version is out of the door, the windows version is going to be that much closer too. 2. Any features/suggestions requested by users like you, that will make it into the mac version, will also make their way in the windows version later on too. Anyway you look at it it's a win win situation for mac and windows users (although I can appreciate your frustration regarding the time lapse between the mac and window versions). :o -
[PUBLISHER] Some new suggestions
Seneca replied to Petar Petrenko's topic in Older Feedback & Suggestion Posts
Let's get the Publisher out in the open this side of Christmas first, in alpha or pre beta versions, I don't really care. Then we can have any meaningful forum-talks about the must-have features or whatever else takes our fancy. -
Affinity Publisher
Seneca replied to Yogi9409's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on Desktop Questions (macOS and Windows)
I think Dave's post quoted above is quite clear and It's not what I wanted to hear unfortunately. Those of us who use inDesign professionally, will have to continue doing so for the foreseeable future and in my case it will most probably be the only DTP software I will have used till my retirement. It will be down to the next generation of DTP professionals to pick up the challenge of getting the Affinity Designer to become the inDesign challenger. I will of course try all the beta releases as they become available but will not expect much initially. Regards -
Well, I have never had a problem downloading Affinity betas, be it Designer or Photo. So, I tend to believe that you may have some issues with your internet provider. It's also possible that you have hit a busy time downloading the software, meaning that a lot of downloads have been requested at the same time. Regards

Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 11)
Seneca replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
We need Publisher ASAP, thanks. :) -
>> Depending on how you want to count things, there are at most 8 devs working on OS X at present (6 contributing to Affinity up-to 1.5, 2 working on future things), 4 working on Windows and 1 running and improving our regression testing suite. So we have at most 13 devs at this point. <<< So, who is working on the Publisher. This is the software I'm most interested in. Regards :)

Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 10)
Seneca replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
On Constraints, I've been using constraints to implement my own arrows before the development team implements native arrows support in the application. What I'm missing right now the fact that I can't lock the vertical or horizontal resizing of the Constraints Group. In the case of arrows I want to make sure that the constraints group is not resizable vertically only horizontally. At other times I want to make sure that I can only resize the group vertically not horizontally. I'm not sure what the 3 icons do at the bottom right corner of the Constraints Panel. Does anyone out there know what they are for? Best regards -
Well, Andy Somerfield said this in another thread: "Macros are one of the prerequisites for scripting - and scripting certainly will be exposed in Designer in the future." So there you have it. Regards :D
-
1. I think macros are fine and they can do a lot to automate certain processes. 2. But we definitely need scripting to push the automation envelope further. That goes particularly for Designer and later Publisher. 3. I also hope that Affinity is planning to expose their APIs so that we can write Plug-ins to go much further (to infinity affinity and beyond!!! :)). Regards

Sorry, I wasn't doing it right. I got it now. -
Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 8)
Seneca replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
This drives me nuts. I cannot reproduce any of that. ---make circles, make a symbol based on it do you mean circles (plural) or just one circle. ---move + enlarge and then power dublicate Done --- if you then move one circle (you have to decollapse the symbol and select one of the circles itself, not the symbol, all circles move in relative increments to their size Nope if I sub-select a circle only that circle moves. What do you mean by decollapse? -

Thanks for the next beta. Leading appears to be still broken unfortunately. :) I mean, the manual leading is still broken. If one defines a Style that works. Regards -
What's coming in Affinity Photo 1.5

Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 5)
Seneca replied to MattP's topic in [ARCHIVE] Designer beta on macOS threads
Slides on steroids! I don't recall seeing so many options in the Slices Tab before, especially when you click on the triangle left to the name. Have they been there before or is it a new addition to Beta 1.5 release? JSON? Wow. That would merit a good video tutorial from the Affinity Team. :) Regards -
Hello Ken, You are wrong. Each object is placed on a separate layer. They are all layers!!! If you create a new layer before you start drawing AD creates a grouped layer. So when you then draw something new on a page it simply adds that new object to the grouped layer but even then each object is placed in its own layer within the grouped layer. Regards
-
Hello Ken, You misunderstood my post. Consider this: 1. Launch the program. The program starts out without any layers. 2. Select a rectangle tool. Draw a rectangle on a page/canvas. As soon as you do that the program will automatically create a new layer for you and your new rectangle is placed on that layer. 3. Select a triangle tool. Draw a triangle on a page. The program has created another layer and the triangle was placed on a second layer. 4. Select text tool. Type some text and a third layer with the text has been created for you. So you have used 3 tools and the program has automatically created 3 independent layers for you. What I said in my previous post was that the program will take care of the layers for you. So there is no need of having an empty layer at start up. Correct me if I'm wrong but I suspect you are not aware of how Affinity Designer works.
-
Because it makes more sense not to have it until you start drawing and the program will create one for you automatically.
-
Sorry, but I'm not sure whether I understand your problem. I much prefer the way the beta works now. The program starts out without any layers because there is nothing drawn yet. As soon as you start using the program each tool will automatically create a new layer. So no need to create an empty layer. If later you want to organise your layers in a different way or merge them you are free to do so using either Grouping, or merging, etc. Regards
