I was hoping that we would be able to save them out as presets like Grids and Axis Manager. Maybe later.
-
Thank you. I assumed that they would be instant but didn't realise that I needed to check Show Column Guides. Thank you.

I'm puzzled. How do you work with new Guides Manager. I'm unable to find a way to apply them to a page. There is no apply button, or anything that would tell me how to commit changes to pages.

Affinity Publisher Public Beta - 1.7.0.157

Thanks for the next beta. -
Tables across more pages
Seneca replied to grapher's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
This is clearly visible here and it's great to see. -
You are absolutely right. I should have read the initial problem more carefully. The best option here would be to put the text in a Table but unfortunately Table styles will not be able to reproduce the PDF as attached by Cap in his first post. I hope that Table styles in Publisher will become more flexible in the future.
-
You can add as many decorations to your paragraph as you like by clicking the + button next to the style in question. I tried to reproduce your initial design with Table Styles but they are unable to cope with that. I hope that table styles can be improved upon later.

I thought I was referring to the inDesign frames. -

Just created a small movie to illustrate that. movie.mov -
Odd behavior with tables
Seneca replied to Gardenia's topic in [ARCHIVE] Publisher beta on macOS threads
I can confirm the same odd behaviour here. Just created a table on a new page, duplicated the page. I am able to edit the table on the second page but when I go back to the first page I am unable to select anything and the table rows and heading don't show up. -
improved picture frame tool

Adobe has just released the latest update to inDesign and they copied the way Affinity handles pictures. -
You are absolutely right. I can't argue with that. Inherited master pages should be part of our toolbox.
-
It seem like an idea for a script in a future version of Publisher with script support added.
-
I'm not sure whether you are aware of that but you can do that already in the current beta. If you can assign a number of master pages to a single page then a tree-like structure for Paster Pages is not really necessary anymore. Favour composition over inheritance (it's Object-oriented mantra among programmers).
-
Basically, what I am trying to say is that this is not the last word from the Affinity devs on how Affinity Publisher is going to handle grids and ruler guides.

As soon as Affinity released Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer to the wild, requests for scripting capabilities in these apps equally soon emerged. At that time (3.5 – 4 years ago) I was all for JavaScript. Now, I'm not sure whether Python would be a better choice. I have a feeling that Adobe is working towards supporting Python in their suite of apps. I would be delighted if Affinity offered both languages as an option. Python in particular has been a very popular choice of recent because of the whole ML shebang and has gained in popularity as a result of that. AppleScript would be a popular choice among the Mac programmers, but unfortunately, as far as I am concerned it's a dead end. Apple itself hasn't done anything to AppleScript over the last decade and I suspect they are working on a new scripting solution, most probably Swift based. Most of all AppleScript is not a cross-platform solution and therefore it cannot be taken seriously as a viable option.

No need so be so dramatic. There is more than just one way to skin this particular cat. I don't think that inDesign way is the only right way. I can envision guides to be saved as presets and you can call any precent you want on a given page or even better associate a given set to a given Master Page. No need to think in terms of layers as per inDesign way.

Paste a table within a text frame

And that was the crux of the question. -
Paste a table within a text frame
Seneca replied to ConnectCreative's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Not at the moment. -
I'm not sure whether I follow what you are trying to say. Do you mean we should be able to run 2 or more stories and have the text boxes linked each story separately. If that's what you are trying to say then I am 100% behind you. In fact, I was working on an inDesign project and wanted 5 stories run separately on each page and be able to link these stories across all the pages automatically. inDesign allows yo to have only 1 story across the pages. I hope Publisher is going to be more flexible than that.

Column configuration
Seneca replied to mschwerer's topic in Feedback for Affinity Publisher V1 on Desktop
Check out this short video. It might shed some light on what you might need to do: columns.mov -
We already have quite a number of both free and paid for software that do the OCR extremely well. I don't think that Affinity would bring anything new to the table. Having said that, in the fullness of time, when we have plug-in support in Affinity product OCR is a very good candidate for an extension.

You can create a text box for the first language , say English, and let the auto-flow take its course, but the second language will need to be manual. Which means that you need to have 2 complete files, one for English and one for the Danish translation. You will still need to dedicate a lot of time to make sure that lines in each translations match, and that may be difficult, regardless of whether this process can be automated or not. You may find it easier to create text frames, save them in the assets manager and just paste them on a page per page basis as appropriate. This way you will have maximum control over the text, especially whether it comes to matching lines in each translation.

I'm not sure whether OCR belongs to a DTP application. I agree with @Fixx on that.
