  1. It seems that it's not possible to lay out data merge structure in Master Pages at the moment.

I'm not sure whether this is a bug or simply not planned at all.

It would be a very powerful thing to be able to create a number of page layouts using the Data Merge Node box in Master Pages and being able to change the layout of the merged page at will later. Basically a combination of Smart Master Pages + Smart Merge = a very powerful feature for catalogues, etc.

  2. Data Merge Node box maintains snapping of its contents (text box or a table) when you start from one cell.

But if you create rows and columns first and then add a text box ( or a table) the snapping doesn't occur.

EDIT: I was wrong. I didn't test this feature enough. No snapping takes place even in a single cell. I think that snapping is desirable though so I will put this forward as a suggestion for future improvement.

I don't want to have to define a character style for "gray", "smaller", and "gray smaller" to be able to use either or both of these character styles.

If memory serves me well this is available in VivaDesigner.

This is quite a useful feature and I would encourage you to submit it as a suggestion and who know it might be added to the program in the future.

I too, thought about it a while back but never submitted it as a suggestion.

Note that I am not arguing against IDML export, but just that the idea that Publisher could ever output an InDesign file that is faithful and reliable is never going to be a reality no matter how many resources Serif tries to pour into it.

Absolutely right and this point needs to be reminded to those who hope to get a faithful rendition of any inDesign file in Publisher.

However, I also think that it's of vital importance that Publisher exports its files in IDML format as well. IDML has become the cross platform file format between Publishing applications. To be able to open a file created in Quark or inDesign or in VivaPublisher or Publisher on any if these platforms, however inaccurate, is a win win situation without any question.

I found with last version of AP 1.9.0.742 and macOS BIG SUR Beta 9 that column guides doesn't work.

I had a quick look and you are partially right.

The Column Guides are created but the view is not refreshed so you don't see the guides on the screen.

To see them you need to create a Horizontal or Vertical Guide (then delete it) and the screen will refresh to  show the Column Guides.

Definitely, it's a bug you should report and it might be a Mac bug only.

please let me know if affinity products would work and if other newspapers are using it.

The short answer is yes, the longer one is it depends.

However, only you can answer that question adequately by testing the software and testing it again.

Don't rely on anybody's opinions in this matter because each company/users have different expectations.

So once again, test, test and test again.

Once you do that you will arrive at own conclusion which is the most important one.

Practical suggestion: recreate your newspaper with Affinity Publisher (try to test Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo as well).

Do you have an object you could attach that shows this, as I'm not seeing this myself.

Here's a screencast of the problem areas I found. The arrow is the one showing no difference between the Miter Join and Bevel Join when object gets expanded. Going inward there is some difference there.

I'm also including the Designer file with objects I played with.

This is a hit and miss situation at the moment. Some objects seem to work OK some don't. The more complex ones are more problematic.
