Looking at the right-click menu on a layer, say, a table or a rectangle, etc., the options Expand Selection, Collapse Selection, Collapse all Parent should be grayed out and inactive, as well as Release, Ungroup, Show Others. They work only with groups.

    Hi,
i really love the patch tool and its enormes power.
It would be great if an option can be added to mirror the source along an axis which can be defined by point of origin (default: document PoO)  and rotation (default vertical - maybe combined with existing rotation). This would be an ideal extension to rotate and scale.
in many cases users need to patch in outblown areas in faces, impacting ears and eyes.

GripsholmLion reacted to ydnic_wolver in Feature request: Lock Layer
    Hi,
First of all, thanks for your hard work, I really like the new versions.
The only request I would have is related to the functionality of the lock layer.
I would like to see a real lock layer, which, like any other software, locks all the content of a layer and prevents any action on it.
Right now the lock layer is not a lock layer, it's more of a positional lock layer, which is very different.
I can't count the number of times I've inadvertently drawn on a layer that was locked, it's really frustrating.
I am looking forward to this problem being solved one day, because to me it is.

Thank you again for your work

GripsholmLion reacted to John74 in Levels window Gamma number field
When in the Levels adjustment window, when the cursor is in the Gamma's number field (see attached screenshot), if the user presses the up or down arrows on the keyboard, this steps the gamma from 0 to 1 to 2, with no steps in between. I find that these are excessively large steps that have no practical use. Usually when I want to change the Gamma, it's by a few tenths or hundredths, not by 1. As a comparison, when the cursor is in the Black Level or White Level number fields, pressing the up/down arrows steps up/down by 1% at a time, which is much more granular and useful.
Can you please change how the Gamma's number field reacts to keyboard presses from the up/down arrows? Maybe adjust it by 0.1 or 0.01 for each press?

GripsholmLion got a reaction from John74 in Zoom to Fit isn't big enough
I have always disliked this waste of valuable space. Zoom to fit... and it doesn't actually fit. Not funny when my most used screen is 13".
Interestingly, the wasted space in your example is, proportionally, not quite as bad as what I typically experience. I don't why that should be.
@MikeTO It centres OK for me, so that's an interesting quirk. Maybe it is down to different scrollbar view settings (mine is set to "when scrolling").

GripsholmLion reacted to John74 in Zoom to Fit isn't big enough
I have a request regarding how the "Zoom to Fit" zoom mode works. I find that it doesn't zoom in enough. There is still a large border of empty space around the photo once you've zoomed to this level. Personally I feel that it would make more sense to make this empty border smaller, so that the size of the photo is as big as possible. I know that it is helpful to have some empty space around the photo for certain tasks, like cropping, but the amount of empty space that is currently there seems excessive to me.
I know that modifying how this zoom mode works may mess up some people's workflow, so maybe instead of changing it, could you add another zoom mode called, for example, "Zoom to Fit (tight)" that zooms to fit, but with a much smaller empty border?
I have attached two screenshots. One shows how "Zoom to Fit" currently works, with a large empty border around the photo. For the other, I have manually zoomed into the highest whole-number zoom percentage that fits the photo into the window (21% in this case). The photo is quite a bit bigger this way, which I find very handy.

It is actually, OP even said so

I used the standard tools shown on the toolbar as it was easier to copy over / copy names over to Figma each one by hand, I did make it wrap in the Figma file with a max of 2 lines, below is the example with "Callout Rounded Rectangle Tool" included within the mockup

    ----------
@Return The example I showed would actually be a good way to learn, as you have both side by side, with the possibility of minimizing it when it gets in the way.

Illustrator Actually does the same thing when you go to view all of the tools / add new ones to the toolbar, they also have a toggle that allows you to change between a grid/list of icons-text

I think this is another case of having options for individual user's preferences. By all means, have an option to show the name of tools, for people who can't remember what they are and don't want to use the tool tips. But it does need to be an option so that the rest of us don't have wasted space for nothing!

This is another example of when it would be better if a setting was "sticky".
One thing that does annoy me about the Affinity apps is the way Serif seems to think that users prefer to keep reverting to a default setting chosen by the developers, rather than keeping a setting that they have chosen themselves!

When I retouch with e.g. the Clone Stamp tool or Inpainting Brush Tool, I always create a new empty pixel layer for the retouching, leaving the original image untouched.
This means that I always need to change the source layer every time to be "Current Layer & Below"
It would be nice if I could set that as my preferred default.

While exporting JPEG XL files is possible, so far only lossy compression is supported. JXL is a feature-rich format, but being unable to store data losslessly limits its use as a modern alternative to TIFF or PNG. Therefor an addition of this feature would be beneficial.

GripsholmLion reacted to Godlessape in Suggestion - Fill/stroke attribute (colour/transparency/etc) overview and editor - please
In Figma and Rive there is a way to see an overview of all the fills/strokes attributes (colour/transparency/gradient/etc) for a document or layer (depending on what is selected). This feature makes it easy to simultaneously edit many items by colour in a file or layer selection. Please try to add it as it would save a lot of time being able to edit like this. I have vast amounts of files I work on at a time and having to change colours becomes quite a tedious manual task. This would also apply to complex multilayered pieces that need fill/stroke attribute adjustments made across a number of elements. Thanks

GripsholmLion reacted to A-- in Color selection UI should not "disappear" if selected color matches the UI background color
When selecting a color in a window, e.g. Fill color for Text Frame, the color is shown in a rectangle. To change that color one has to click that rectangle again. Now, if the user picks a fill color that matches the background color of the Text Frame window, then that rectangle "disappears" from view. The word "Fill:" remains but there's no visual feedback where to click to make a change.
Having a UI element "disappear" because of what color value the user has picked is clearly a bug.

Possible fix includes always using a contrasting border, or adding one whenever the color to she shown matches the background color of the command window. The former is probably easier to implement.

This issue seems generic to almost all color selection UI. For example in the Character window, the outline color is shown at the end, after the stroke thickness. Unlike the example from the Text Frame, there is no cue whatsoever that there is a color selection field, if the color selected matches the currently active background color for the UI.

GripsholmLion reacted to philipt18 in Please add Auto-Save (this is not the same thing as Restore)
Please add an Auto-Save feature that will save the document at a set interval of time.
This is not the same as the current Restore feature where if an unsaved document is found when starting up, it offers to restore it. There are two main differences. The first, is that Restore doesn't always work - I just lost several days of work when Publisher crashed, and I was not offered to restore it. The second difference is that saving the document with changes allows backup software like Time Machine to back up the saved files.
Right now if you have a file open for a week and forget to save the document, and there is a crash, Time Machine would never have backed it up (because in the file system it never changed), and if the restore feature doesn't kick in you're out of luck.
Sure, in an ideal world everyone would remember to Save often, but frankly I think it's absurd that software intended for professionals even has a possibility of losing data. Please add Auto-Save.

What's particularly sad about this is Serif just completely redesigned the UI for v2, but chose to disregard many basic UI/UX fundamentals along with modern usability recommendations. I'm not sure having Serif go back and redesign it again will magically fix all of the issues. Hopefully, Serif are paying attention (not just here, but also in various communities across the web, Reddit, etc) and will honestly begin to work to resolve these issues in the coming v2 updates.
I'm not sure I'd be willing to fork out again for v3 if these issues aren't addressed.

GripsholmLion reacted to Kac1per in Focus more on fixing bugs instead of pushing new features
It's nice that Affinity suite receives new features, but at the same the are many bugs that ruin the experience of using these apps. It was really frustrating when the v2.1 version came out and had loads of new features, but at the same time hardly any bug, I had encountered so far, got fixed. Many of them are still present despite having been reported by other users many, many months ago. I think that all Affinity apps would become much more enjoyable to work with if developers focused more on fixing and polishing existing features before making new ones. I stumble upon various bugs in Affinity software on daily basis and they significantly impact my productivity. My suggestion is to include less new features and more bug fixes in future updates.

GripsholmLion reacted to ygoe in Area measurement tool is useless?
    Hello,
I very much anticipated the new area measurement tool. In v1 I had to help myself with temporary rectangles and a calculator. I hoped that I can now measure the rooms in my floor plan easily. But this doesn't seem to be the case.
After trying it out and then reading the documentation, I understood that this tool can show me the area of a single or multiple selected objects.
I don't have objects that span entire rooms. My rooms exist between walls that are rectangles, some of them rotated by 45°.
What I need is something that works like the distance measurement tool: Select all points of the polygon, snapping to objects, and drawing a closed polygon of the room outlines. This is how GIS tools work. As soon as the polygon is closed, they show you the area inside the drawn selection. I don't know what I could use the area of a single existing object for, really. A simple product calculation of width and height would do in most cases.
So, Affinity v2 is of no help here either and I'll have to draw temporary rectangles and use a calculator again just as before. 🙁

GripsholmLion reacted to MikeTO in Invisible or nearly invisible icons in light mode in 2.1
I know a couple of these have been reported before but this thread in the feedback forum got me looking for places where controls are invisible in light mode: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/183915-my-greatest-annoyance-using-affinity-designer-2-the-aspect-ratio-lock-icon/
All of these screenshots are with the default contrast settings but the high contrast setting makes no difference.
The new linked fields icon in 2.1 has good contrast everywhere except in Designer's Document Setup, Publisher's Text Wrap Settings, and Publisher's Guides. The icon is in a lot of places and all the rest that I found looked good.
    Left: Designer vs. Right: Photo

    Publisher's Text Wrap Settings

Publisher's Guides (for both Margins, shown, and Spread Origin)

This has been previously reported but the two Save Preset icons have no contrast in light mode so they're invisible. Same in all 3 apps.

The Move Up/Down icons in Layer Effects have no contrast in light mode so they're invisible.

The Pinning panel has a completely white background so the controls are washed out.

Likewise the Styles panel has a completely white background so some styles are impossible to see. Same in all 3 apps.

In light mode there is no background icon well for disabled controls in the Context Bar like there is in dark mode - the icons are floating. Same in all 3 apps.

Similarly, disabled buttons have no visible contrast with the background like there is in dark mode - the button labels are floating.

Similarly, disabled pulldown buttons have no visible contrast with the background like there is in dark mode - the selected value and the spinner controls on the right are floating.

The blue focus rectangle gets in the way of the text in a field in light mode - there's a thick grey border inset in the field in light mode that seems to shrink the available space.

The Move to Parent icon in the Insert Topic Reference dialog (shown above) has no contrast in light mode making it impossible to see.
The Add Section icon in Section Manager looks very disabled in light mode when it's actually enabled. This one is odd because the same icon in Data Resource Manager (shown right) has good contrast.

And here's a dark mode issue - a disabled radio button (Continue page numbering) has no contrast and is invisible in dark mode but it's good in light mode.

A masked group with Passthrough blend mode is rendered incorrectly where the mask produces semi-opacity.
That bug has been in the Affinity apps, and reported many times, for the 6 years I've used them, so I consider it a forever bug now.
Workaround: switch the group's blend mode to Normal or any except Passthrough and the rendering will be correct.

The Rubber Band Mode button works strangely. By default, Rubber Band Mode is disabled when you start AD. Within each working document, the status of this switch can be configured separately and one can assume that the position of this switch is an attribute of a particular file, but it is not: if you close the file and reopen it, the switch state is reset to the default - "OFF". It would be nice to have a general setting for this item in the settings menu. Even cool would be if this button could be assigned to a hotkey (but about this I will write in detail in another topic)

GripsholmLion reacted to Cartoonjosh in My biggest two qualms with Designer are about stroke variation
Yes, the Knife tool has the Scissors option, which is nice and comes close to solving it... but not quite. Instead of hiding a section between two nodes of contour of a filled shape -  in such a way to get a simple gap in the contour -  Scissors actually cuts a new shape from the original shape. The severed segment of contour, or stroke, is actually a new independent shape, albeit it being open. In fact, if you move the nodes of the segment you'll get a colour fill where the geometry crosses.
I'd find hiding segments of the contour line of a shape useful for situations in which I don't want contour where two shapes overlap. For example, the arm of a character must not have a contour where it overlaps with his torso. I tried to draw different positions of an arm over a torso and then tried to use the Scissor option of the Kinfe tool to eliminate the contour near the shoulder, and got mixed results. In some cases I could drag the portion of contour away and nicely got the gap I wanted, in other cases I got slices taken out of the entire shape because - I assume - Designer needs to recreate a coherent Geometry.
Someone elsewhere in this forum brought the example of Moho, a 2D animation app, which has precisely this "hide (parts of) contour" function.  Adobe Animate, too, can very easily erase contour segments of a shape. I realise comparing apps, which are totally different coding worlds, is not a useful exercise,  but I just mean to get the idea across...
The funny thing is that if I draw the shape as it should be from the beginning (which, of course, I usually do  ), by leaving an open gap, say, in the above example I'd draw the arm without closing the shape near the shoulder) and then use the Vector Fill tool to colour it, Designer will actually respect the drawing perfectly.  So the issue arises only when editing.
