GripsholmLion reacted to Affinity Rat in I have Deleted V2 and Gone Back to V1
Let me first say I havent read the other 123 comments.
A good UI should be designed to be intuitive, not necessitating going to the manual to do simple things.
The controls on the left hand side of the right handed setup are terrible. Why must a user click multiple times to determine what parameters the brush is set to. This is one of the most commonly used and therefore irritating aspects of v2 UI.
    1. Opacity, accumulation, hardness, feather parameters should be always displayed in status area consistent with other controls.
    2. When applying a feather in V1 the apply button is adjacent the parameters. V2 moved feather to a menu item. Being used to V1 after adjusting and applying the feather and clicking away the feather was applied. Recently in V2 I adjusted the feather from the menu, didn but forgot about apply, no checkbox adjacent to parameter, couldnt figure out why not applied, duh.. the apply is a checkbox at top of the screen. No hint of what was going on, If you want to disassociate a parameter from its apply box (poor design), why  not highlight the apply box in red when the parameter is changed to direct user attention to it.
Its a small thing but when dev redesign the UI that users are accustomed to, it is irritating to users have to start searching are relearning, when things no longer seem behave as they previously did. I dont need the benefits of V2 and after seeing how the UI is far worse in V2 I probably wont be interested in V3.

    Hi
Be great for coming update with the ability to expand strokes, also when multiple strokes are grouped.
As of now, it seems like they have to be ungrouped before expanding works.

I left a similar comment on a new feature addition of the 2.4 beta (Space Horizontal / Vertical now considers key object) in the excitement of the moment, unaware of its "suggestion nature". I'll elaborate more on this post.
    Affinity's "Tidy up" version
What I was referring to is a "logical next step" of the new alignment behaviors in the 2.4 beta: an option that would equally or separately distribute the space between objects selected horizontally and vertically, in a similar fashion to the "Tidy up" option present in Figma. The result being a grid that may also let us set a specific space between each item in the two axes.

    Quick grids case
The Affinity apps already promote the creation and management of grids with the "Quick grids" option: by pressing the right or down arrow key while creating a shape you'll see duplicates, which also let the user set a distance between them by long pressing the same keys.
Promotional material showcasing product design uses cases
I'm fully aware that the scope of an app like, for example, Affinity Designer is a bit different from the likes of Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, etc. In the sense that it's not really trying to be a prototyping tool, but we are all aware that the promotional materials showcase product design use cases.

And such uses cases would certainly benefit people like web designers, for example. So it's then to be expected that the Affinity Team would obviously be aware of such features, and I know they are . So that's why in my original comment I asked if something like this was already being thought on for a future update.
    Thanks!

I just downloaded the Designer Beta and the problems 1, 2 seems to be solved.
    1. I tried quitting the application while in full screen. The application once reopened is taking the maximum available space but doesn't creep under the menu bar 👍
    2. I tried opening the application after unplugging my main screen. The application window is now contained within the new smaller screen size 👍
    3. So far no overlaps of the window main button with the toolbar 🤞
    4. Still no luck when opening images the Mac way 😅

That is a specious "thin-end-of-the-wedge" fallacy.
Mike's modest suggestion would bring a little extra ease of use to Designer's text handling. For my use case, it would make it easier to maintain consistency with CSS typography properties. Not a deal-breaker, just a nicety.

Because nice looking text is within the ambit of Designer and because some people have no need to buy Publisher.

I really wish that Designer had AutoCorrect for two reasons - automatic smart quotes and ordinals. I type a lot of place names in Designer and a surprising number have apostrophes, and I type a lot of ordinals. Designer is the only application I have used in decades that doesn't have automatic smart quotes and I never remember that I have to do it manually. I only find out when I later import the drawing into Publisher where Preflight flags them.
I don't really need the rest of AutoCorrect in Designer but I'd really like these two pieces of it.
    Thanks

    +1
I have a big font library of variable fonts I installed this week.  Then I start my work in Affinity and find out none of them work in Affinity Designer.  This means I can't even do basic graphic design tasks that involve any text, making this software completely useless for me.
I have loved Affinity software.  But this lack of font support is a big problem for me, and most people I suppose.  This is the first time I will have to consider Adobe products out of pure necessity.  This should be a high priority item for the development team...I can't believe people have been asking for variable font support since 2020 and nothing has been done!  Very disappointing.

While I am not suggesting you are not aware of the seriousness of the lack of this feature, I do want to highlight that, at least for me, this is the biggest obstacle why I cannot migrate from Adobe to Affinity fully. Currently I am using the two simultaniously and in many aspects Affinity is on pair or even better than Adobe, until I have to use fonts... I literally cannot edit 80% of my legacy files since I broadly use Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts and some of the baked-in Microsoft fonts like Bahnschrift, which is a variable-only solution (AFAIK). So, if you really want to compete, this feature is a must, and yesterday was too late in my opinion for implementing it.

It would be great to have the ability to set the white, grey and black points using the eyedropper tool. Having switched from PS this is a feature that I really miss - especially when working with scanned images to ensure that the white balance is correct and the background is 100% white.

I looked all the forums to see if this has been suggested yet, but having Affinity Designer "automatically" selecting the node tool whenever I convert text to curves, is really annoying. Especially since I have to switch to the selection tool in order to use the convert feature. Can this at least be an option I can turn off?

GripsholmLion reacted to Maxdanger in Photo - Progress bar displays over other applications
    Hi all,
I was running a (large) focus merge today. When I left Affinity Photo to go to other apps while it ran, I noticed that the progress bar for the focus merge was showing above all my other windows without any way of hiding it. Clicking on the progress bar returns you to the Photo application:

Progress bar displays over other apps.mp4   I'm using latest 2.3.1 and latest MacOS Sonoma 14.2.1.
Posting as a bug as my assumption would be that this isn't intended behaviour.
    Thanks

Affinity applications have had issues with windows management from the start, its been years and I don't see any improvement.
    1. If you quit the application while working in fullscreen mode, opening the application will result in a maxed out window that even go under the menu bar.
The dimensions of the window when not in fullscreen should be stored and used instead.

    2. Linked to this widow size problem, the screen might not be the same as last time the application was opened so the window should never exceed the screen size minus the dock (if it is not hidden) and the menu bar.
I think Apple design guidelines do define all of this.

    3. When opening the application, the personas button are sometimes in the same place as the windows buttons. As if the fullscreen mode was never exited.

    4. Opening a file in an application should always put the focus on the application AND show the space where the application is active.
Currently if you open a file by dragging it on the application icon (which is a very common practice for long time macOS users) the application will only gain focus. You have to change between your spaces to see that the file was correctly opened.
This drives me nuts as I always wait for the application to load the file and then appear like all the other applications do, then after a while I remember that I have to switch to the application's space.

GripsholmLion reacted to Maxdanger in Request - Affinity Designer - Add Select Same Style
The Style Picker Tool is a really welcome addition to V2 and I feel there's an opportunity to further it by extending its functionality to the Select Same menu.
I'm working on a number of documents with various dashed strokes which are all equal weight and colour, so if I wanted to select all the curves with a certain dashed pattern, I don't believe this is currently achievable. If Select Same > Style were introduced, I could select only the dashed line style I wanted and then update all lines to another style with ease. Right now I would have to select each line individually which isn't practical when there are thousands of dashed line styles.
Thanks and hope you consider this as a future addition 😀

"Imply" is the keyword here. It might have been my custom understanding or interpreting of the marketing text whose combination of "next generation" + "brand-new" (… versions of the apps) + "completely redesigned" (UI) made me think that either all interface glitches or even / at least the major bugs would have been fixed. On affinityspotlight the wording "Redesigned (…) the all-new Affinity (…)" + "Painstaingly remodelled" has been even more implying by hiding "interface look" or "visual appearance", for instance as a part of the new version name "all-new Affinity V2 UI".

I can't agree with you at all. I also didn't mention DAM, so I don't know why another thread has to mutate into "I don't use" and "I, I, I, I".
As vkyr suggests, sidecar files are not necessarily related to DAMs. They can just ALSO be used there with great advantage.
It's hard to make professional progress in this forum, and to move towards something constructive, because here again we have a discussion that can't get off the ground due to a lack of industry knowledge. This is not niche knowledge, after all.
My suggestion to give develop modules an overhaul had nothing to do with DAM. There are so many things in the module that need algorithm replacement and there are clear shortcomings compared to competitors, both in features and quality.

    Hi @peterhammer,
As Red Sands mentions, unfortunately our developers don't tend to comment on feature requests directly - however I can certainly appreciate the benefit of such an option within Affinity and therefore will be sure to pass this feedback through to our team, to be considered for a future update.
    I hope this helps

GripsholmLion got a reaction from cc7 in Please reduce some steps for Eyedropper tool
Just to be clear, I'm not about to support this suggestion if it would cause new problems, but...
I find that the need to drag the pipette* around means that the ability to sample externally has very limited utility because I cannot find a way to get the pointer to anywhere useful. Dragging prevents or interferes with a lot of navigational actions, including: triggering a hot corner (cannot trigger it); swiping between desktop workspaces (the sampler is lost); pressing the mission control key (ditto); and keyboard shortcuts. So it seems that to sample from another window, I have to do some prep: move Affinity out of fullscreen, ensure that the target window is in the same workspace, and place it in a reachable position.
What a faff. So if the target is not an Affinity-compatible file, I use one of the many third-party colour tools for MacOS which do not require dragging and therefore give their sampler easy access to any window or workspace. I venture to suggest that as a workaround.
*Which, incidentally, looks more like a chicken drumstick in the 2.x redesign.
