David Gamble got a reaction from amyu in Fit Box to Content and auto resizing for text boxes
Using Indesign, I would create a caption box (steps below), then hit ALT+CMD+C which would shrink the text box to fit the text. The text frames have a 1mm inset.
In fairness, the double clicking would help, but I have always favoured keystrokes over using a pointer.
Also, I find making the text box fit the text, reduces the chances of incorrect selection in other areas outside caption use when there are numerous text boxes around.
    Maybe it's a little OCD, I dunno.

    For context, I used to:
    Select all images
    Create Static Captions from Filename
    Find/Replace filename suffix with nothing
    Apply Object Style to Captions
ALT+CMD+C to fit box to content.

    Hi All,
The one thing I miss from our move to Affinity Publisher is a Fit Box to Content command for text boxes.
    Same goes for auto-resizing.
I have gotten used to a keystroke for the last ten years or so.
(Apologies if these exist and I can't find them).

In addition what @thomaso mentions above, note that the appearance of HSL colors is dependent on your document color mode and profile.
Below the same HSL value picked from the inherent "Colors" palette is shown in Adobe RGB, sRGB, CMYK ISO Coated v2 and CMYK ISONewspaper document color modes. In each instance the HSL value stays the same, but rendering of the color value changes from most saturated to least saturated. The Color Chooser shows the CMYK color values what would be used when converting the HSL value to CMYK mode in different profile environments (and when exporting using the current profile environment). [Note that the forum truncates the color space to sRGB but relative differences should still be discernible.]

This means that you could basically use the internal "Colors" palette as a CMYK palette based on appearance (especially if you have a calibrated display) whenever you have your document in CMYK color mode with correct target profile. The picked color values would be HSL based but the approximated appearance simulated for the CMYK target, and the CMYK conversion values [that would be used whenever exporting to CMYK color spacing without changing the document CMYK target) shown in the Color Chooser.

The colours and swatches in Affinity are coded to must have one specific colour mode and can not get toggled to another. Those from the default palette "Colours" are defined in HSL. If you want to have CMYK swatches you would need different swatches.
If you edit an existing swatch then the used colour mode (the slider / colour selector type) defines the colour mode of the swatch and thus, by re-editing its values, an initial HSL swatch can become a CMYK swatch.
Whereas in the Colours panel you can display every colour in several modes with their according colour values corresponding to the current document profile. To get every colour displayed in i.e. CMYK you choose this form the menu + activate the lock icon. Note, this is a panel display setting only, it does not convert a HSL swatch to a CMYK swatch. With this lock deactivated a selected swatch (or coloured object) is displayed in the Colours panel in the colour mode where it got defined.

The top request in this forum is scripting, which baffles me because Affinity already has a great macro and job processing system. With it users can automate almost anything inside of Affinity without having to write and maintain any code.
The main problem it has though, is that it cannot save and load Batch Jobs. Batch Jobs can have many steps and settings, so setting the up every time they need to be run is tiresome. This is the equivalent of building a scripting system but not letting users save or load scripts.
I think that Saving and Loading batch jobs is a low hanging fruit that would make Affinity Photo 10x more powerful with 1/1000 of the work of implementing scripting.

Thanks for raising this, I've been able to replicate this here and I would expect the app to open the linked file, rather than a copy of and therefore I'm getting this logged with our developers now.
Equally, selecting File > Save on this copy document appears to save the file, but the original is not overwritten and therefore the file does not appear to actually be saved.
The same workflow in V2 also functions in this manner, the issue only occurs if Edit Image is selected first, and then Edit in... is selected for this 'Edit Image' document. At which point a copy of the image is opened in the relevant Affinity app. This behaviour is the same for me in V1 & V2 but I believe is incorrect in both.
    I hope this helps

Regarding your initial topic "What is the purpose of the image editor in Publisher?" we aren't at cross-purposes.
Whereas the recent request for a more flexible "Open With…" option (e.g. "… Photoshop" or any available app on your system) sounds like a different topic. Indeed, it does not exist yet in Affinity and may require a Feature Request in one of the according forum sections.

Select the image layer in APub and choose menu "File" -> "Edit in Photo".
If APub's photo persona would be sufficient for the planned edits you can click the context toolbar button "Edit Image".
By the way: in APub and its photo persona you can not open an image by the menu command -> "Open…". So the way of dragging to open an image in APub can be quite welcome. Another way is from the macOS finder via right click on the file -> "Open with…" which allows you to choose APub, too.

This is simply the difference between placing a resource file versus opening it.
If dragged on the layout area (the pages) it gets placed, if dragged on the workspace or the interface (panels) it gets opened, as usual for opening as a separate document.
The limited photo editing tools have nothing to do with this app behavior but are permanent in APub and, as you assumed, a matter of the 3 personas in APub, whereas the Photo persona has not the full functions of the separate APhoto.app.

If you double-click on the right/left/top/bottom node of a Frame Text layer the frame will automatically resize to fit the text within the frame.
Is that what you are looking for?

    Hi All,
I would just like to say thank you to all that have helped, or offered suggestions.
I remember transitioning a studio from Quark to Indesign v.1.5 over 20 years ago and that whole thing was demoralising. (It wasn't really ready until v2-3).
Anyway, this transition is drastically smoother in comparison and having this community around during this process is wonderful.
    Thanks again.

Grilli Type supplies GT Sectra as both OpenType-PS (.otf) and OpenType-TT (.ttf).
So he initially had the .otf versions installed and then replaced those with the .ttf versions.
Interesting that the .ttf versions apparently did not have the missing spaces issues.
    Have to test that.
@David Gamble It appears the missing spaces issue may be fixed in an upcoming beta.
Still no word on the ligatures encoding issues... sigh...
