  1. Hello !

As I use the smudge brush more and more often, I encounter an issue I have since I started using Affinity, 3 years ago. This tools is very unreliable as it tend to scrap off the paint off the layer rather than spread it out when you use a pen.

In the first screenshot, I provided the following, from left to right :
    - The brush used for the smudge. Solid round brush with a size jitter at 90%. Settings in the second screenshot.
    - The smudge tool used with a pen at high strength (80%) on top, low strength (40%) on bottom.
    - The same smudge tool used with my mouse. High strength on top, low strength on bottom. The issue isn't present here.

I use Huion Kamvas Pro 20 and the latest version of Affinity.

    I tried the following :

    • Different values of flow and strength affect the intensity of the scrapping, but it's still present especially if I apply a high pressure. Strength has way more impact than flow.
    • Using textured brushes somehow lessen the undesirable effect by a lot, it's what I use currently while waiting for a fix but the scrapping is still slightly visible at high strength/high pressure (Third screenshot)
    • Using other solid brushes range from similar to worse. Especially the basic brushes that come by default.
    • Changing the Tablet Input Method or turning on/off the hardware acceleration does not fix the issue.
    • The Force Pressure button does not fix the issue.
    • Did those in Affinity Photo, but Affinity Designer has the same issue.
    • Tried with another drawing software, the issue isn't present.

The issue has been reported before, here, although it's been a while.

Thank you for taking attention to my issue !

  2. This is the raster_brushes.propcol, at 4,47GB. Around 450mb for vector_brushes.propcol. I can already tell it's big but it's not a surprise since I do have a lot of brushes. It is likely the root of the problem. Kinda, since the number didn't dramatically increase from V1 to V2 and it was working fine then. Perhaps the new link feature worsened it ?

I could make a cleanup since I don't use most of them and I have a backup .afbrushes of all of them.

  3. Hello over here,

I have a recurring and persistent issue since V2 (didn't have that issue with V1) : Everytime I try to move/copy/edit a brush, the whole software freeze. It can take up to 5/10min to move a single brush with everything frozen in the meantime. Most of the time, I just force close the software because of how long it can take.

It happens everytime I do it, on both Photo and Designer.  Perhaps a bit quicker when the software is freshly started but it isn't reliable. My computer is beefy (RTX3070/I7 10700K/64gb RAM) so it isn't a performance issue.

Perhaps it is tied, but I have a lot of custom brushes. Most of them are linked.

  4. Hello there,

I encountered an issue : I did export my assets from V1 to V2 and it worked well at first. But now, the asset panel refuses to simply work. It is completely empty, I cannot import any .asset files I had as backup ("Unable to import file"), and I cannot create a new category. The issue is shared across Affinity Photo and Designer and I have no idea how to fix it.

  5. I also have my little disappointment over V2 - and good surprises too, I expected some features for a long time now and they delivered.

However I did not buy the V2 for its immediate features, but for the support it will get over the year.  And Serif was always pretty good with updates. The current discount + the universal license is good enough for me to buy it immediately and wait for further features. I do hope for some more, especially a better warp ! I consider V2 as a baseline for their future improvements.

If you don't like Affinity 2's current state, just wait. Serif is pretty generous with discounts and another one will come by later.
