I'm trying to modify an existing image so that it fades from the image in one corner to a soft, solid in the opposite color. (Basically a fade out from the picture to a solid, soft color so that I can place text in the solid area.)  I believe what I want is to use the gradient tool, but I can't find any tutorials that show how to do this. I saw a few comments in the forums about how to use the gradient too, but when I try to apply it, I don't see the effect in the base image. If anyone could point me to a good forum topic or viedo it would be greatly appreciated.
