Brush Strokes Disappearing (Split)

I don't know if this is the same problem but if I choose a brush pattern, select brush, choose colour then draw with it, the first time it is fine, but if I go through
the process a second time, with another brush and colour, the colour disappears as soon as I let go of the stylus or mouse. Oddly if I then open a text box, the chosen brush fills that like a mat, and I cannot then get rid of the brush or colour! It is making it impossible to sketch anything.
Is it a bug? I am using Serif draw 8 on win 10, but it does the same on Win 7 too.
