My 2 cents:

• may start with a simpler stock image, and one in higher resolution.
• don’t use stroke, use fill instead. Trace every edge. You can trace one piece at a time, and combine them later.
• view the tutorials, both official by Serif, and from independent creators.

I think I know how to 'copy' the image exactly by using the technique you describe above. My aim was rather to learn the techniques used in creating it (i.e using brushes etc to create 'cloud bands' myself).

But perhaps I should indeed start with easier exercises.

Hi all,

as an exercise, I'm trying to reproduce this stock image in AD:

I want the image to be usable for a laser cutter, so no overlapping curves. That was quite a hassle already to be honest (need to expand stroke on the lines, substract one by one,...If there would be tips on that, most welcome . I had to restrain myself to copy the whole thing to ai and work with the shape builder) but worked out quite nicely.

Now I want to replicate the 'cloud bands' on the planet's surface. What would be the best way to go about this? I would think with the pen tool and then change stroke settings to vary line width. But how do I draw those nice, parallel curves that replicate the curvature of the planet?

[Preserve document units in SVG export]

Same situation as the original poster; I bought Designer for the sole purpose of creating designs for laser cutting.

Some tips from my experience:

- I own a Glowforge, which expects 96 DPI (and some other settings in the SVG, like text converted to curves).  You can create an export template In AD to easily. See attachment for the required settings

- Most (all?) SVG files come with pixels as base unit. To change the units quickly, press "Z" for zoom, you can change the units in the settings there.

- When I save an SVG and reopen it later in AD, dimensions are mixed up. This is because AD imports the SVG as 72dpi, while it had saved it as 96dpi. To reinstate the correct measurements: File > Document Setup > Dimensions: DPI from 72 -> 96.
