  1. Newbie question here. I have used mockups with PS in the past, and am now trying to use one with APh, and have no idea how to go about it. In PS, there was an smart object layer, that, when you double click on it, opens a new window, and you can delete their non-perspective image, replacing it with your own, but in APh, the embedded image is just a pixel layer, and I have no idea how to replace their cover with my own.  Here is a screenshot of the layers. The top Cover layer is the non-perspective image, I guess, but I delete it, nothing changes in the perspective image.  I'm happy to look at a tutorial, but the instructions for the mockup are for PS, and I can't translate them to AP.  Any help would be appreciated

  2. This image has gone through a lot of conversions - starting as a jpg photo, then converted to png "sketch effect" using an online tool, then optimized using ImageOptim, but the final png before placing in AFPub is sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as you show in the resource manager screenshot.  The paper background image is a jpg, with the same color space and color profile as the sketch before placing into AFPub.  I just created a new AFPub document with the same color profile as the images, and placed them in the document.

The I exported as digital-high quality PDF and again as X-1a:2003 PDF.  When I open both in AFPub and look at the resource manager, the transparent image has been exported differently between the two.  In the digital HQ pdf, the image is faded, and is a TIFF with RGB color space and no ICC profile.  In the X-1a pdf, the image is perfect, and is a JPG with CMKY color space, also no ICC profile.

What tool are you using to compare the downsampled and non-downsampled? Curious that it is showing RGB color profiles for the exported embedded images, but the resource manager in AFPub that I am using shows something very different.  But it does suggest that the export process is where the sRGB2014 profile is introduced, rather than the placement of the image in the document.

I find this fascinating, and am learning so much that I didn't know before!

  3. Wow, thanks for the thorough explanation on color space!  I have so much to learn about this stuff!  My PDF is meant to be viewed digitally, so the CMKY color mode choice was unintentional.  I thought I used a web template to create this booklet, but maybe I accidentally chose a print template instead.  I tried changing the export settings to RGB, with no change to the output, so then chose PDF/X-1a like you suggested, and it looks great!

I usually ignore preflight, because it flags a bunch of intentional stuff as warnings, and for this document, it was spelling mistake warnings for a bunch of latin words, and bleed hazards, which aren't an issue with my document, and non-proportional scaling, which is on purpose.

Thanks again, for not only a solution, but some learning as well!

  4. I created a design earlier that used a brush for the stroke, and I want to use the same brush for some new work.  Is there any way to know which brush I used on my previously-created shapes?  When the shape is selected, and I browse through all the many brushes, I don't see any selected, and in the stroke properties panel, I don't see any name for the brush either.  What I ended up doing is saving as with a new name, but that can't be the best way to do match the brush style between objects.

    Hi MarekJ
I believe that this issue was resolved in one of the recent updates. Now, if you select an artboard before initiating an export, it will exclusively export that specific artboard, rather than the entire document.

That's slightly different.  I always use a single artboard with mutliple layers.  If a layer is selected and I select Export, it still defaults to the whole document option.

Rather, just out of interest - the influence of the OS on the internal calculations of the application is strange. It must probably be the effect of HW Acceleration, which may be used for calculations. Would you try turning off HW Acceleration?

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried deselecting "Enable Metal compute acceleration" in settings under Performance>Hardware acceleration, but there was no change in the behavior.

  7. In other apps, I am used to aligning all selected objects to the first one selected. I know I can do that using the align panel, but it's a bit of a PITA to use. I would much rather have all my alignment tools automatically align to the first selected object. Is there no way to change the default behavior so I can just use the buttons in the toolbar rather than the annoying panel?

    Thanks,

    Gregory

One way to do what I think you want to do is shown in my attached video.

Note: This only works with Designer as I use the Point Transform Tool (in Translate mode) to get the two end points of the curves to the same position before the join. (If the two ends aren’t in the same position you will get a line between them.)

Interesting. I just tried the Merge Geometry function myself, without the point transform or overlapping the 2 end point, and it worked fine.  Not sure conceptually what the difference is between merge and join, but merge works and join doesn't. Quite odd! This is the easiest fix so far! Thanks.

  9. Thanks everyone for the discussion. Things I tried based on the discussion, which didn't change the result:

    1. Selecting both nodes and clicking on the sharp button in the Convert section (whether that changed them or just made them sharp again, I don't know). That removed a node next to the end node, but didn't change the result of the Join action.

    2. Moving them further apart, which also didn't change it

    3. Changing direction of one of the curves

    4. I can't see any handles, but have attached screenshots that @thomaso suggested. The strange added selection point after the join, way off my artboard is clearly related, but I don't know how it got there.

I have also attached the file, with a bunch of copies of the curves, in case that helps with troubleshooting. If it's a bug, then I guess I don't feel as stupid. My solution to move forward with the project was to expand the stroke and add them together, which gave me the desired result. I'd still like to understand why the joining curve function isn't working as I would expect.

    Thanks again for the help

  10. I created a curve. Then copied it to make a mirror image for perfect symmetry when joined. I positioned them, selected them, clicked on the node tool, then clicked on Join Curves from the context menu.  Not thrilled with the result. Any thoughts as to what I am doing wrong?

Before and after Join pictures below. Red is just to show that there are two curves before join.  Changing to black isn't the problem. The weird jag in the curve is.

  11. Weirdly, I've just encountered this too.  For me, it's not about snapping, but about the document center lines (red and green) showing up when I drag a layer across the workspace.  I can't think of anything I've done differently today to make them not show up from what I've done in the past, where they reliably appear.  At least I learned from this thread about aligning to document when only one layer is selected - that's actually awesome!

  12. Yeah, @Xakiru, I saw your post as well.  Wasn't sure which thread it belonged in, but in this thread, it was supposedly being bumped up to the dev team in 2018, if it is indeed, the same bug.  Could be user error though, so wanted to confirm first.

    @walt.farrell, I'm using 1.10.6.  File attached.

    Thanks!

  13. I don't think my issue is exactly the same as the OP, but close enough.  When I export shapes that I have drawn with the Pen tool, (export SELECTION as PNG), there is a bunch of blank space around the image, and I have to crop it before using in my dev work.  In contrast to the OP, the shape is the correct size (40px x 40px), but the resulting PNG is 84x84px.  Is this really still an outstanding bug?

First image is export from Designer; second is what I expect, and what I get after cutting out the transparent padding using Photoscape X.

  14. I would prefer that the 3 options (selection, selection area and document) have different keyboard shortcuts, kind of like all the different kinds of paste options.  I always use opt+shift+cmd+s to export.  I'd be happy to learn a new combination to export selection.  Since I use that option roughly 99.99% of the time, that would be the only export shortcut I would need to memorize.

  15. Agreed on needing hex values in all color panels.  All my art work is for web, and copying and pasting hex values is a very common action for me.  But in general, the color panel needs to be simplified greatly.  One of my most common color actions it to create a gradient.  I almost always want a lighter version of the current color as the other side of my gradient.  In Fireworks (I know you get sick of hearing about FW, sorry), but it stores all my most recent colors in a little swatch section in the bottom.  It also has a darkness slider underneath the color wheel, so I can use a lighter/darker gradient with a single control without worrying if I changed the grey level.  It does lack a hex value box on the color wheel, so it's not perfect, but with the "recents" section, the hex box isn't needed.

    Color Panel Wishlist:

    1.  Give me fewer panels.  Can't you display RGB and Hex values in the same RGB panel instead of having two separate panels that are almost identical?

    2. Display recent colors at the bottom of each panel, so I can copy very quickly the same color to multiple objects

    3. Give me a color wheel that displays hex values, either by using the common one seen in FW, or by adding a hex box to your HSL color wheel

    4. Give me a lightness slider

Current workflow for gradient: 1. Click on the dark end of the gradient.  2. Open color panel to RGB Hex.  3. Copy hex value. 4. Click on the light end of the gradient. 5. Open color panel to RGB hex. 6. Past copied value.  7. Open HSL wheel 8. Try to click on the exact spot that is a lighter version of the current color.

In FW: 1. Click on light side of gradient. 2. Click on recently used color swatch 3. Drag lightness slider in desired direction.

FW - 3, AD - 8.  FW for the win!
