I have long wanted to be able to do this; though I suspect that we have somewhat different motivations because I don't recognise your description of the key's function. For me, having certain modifying functions for e.g. the pen tool and others attached to a single key on the left side causes an accessibility issue.

We can customize the modifier keys in VectorStyler and in free open-source software like Blender/ Godot, so we should also be able to do it in Affinity

I don't know where you get the idea that ALT is used to proportionally scale an object or maintain the object's proportions while scaling.

The defaults in APub are (Windows):

    • SHIFT-drag from a corner handle for Resize vector objects, maintaining aspect ratio.
    • CTRL-drag from a corner handle for Resize an object from its center.

Placed images (images layers) are treated differently. By default their aspect ratio is maintained when resizing and you need to use SHIFT-drag from corner handle to make the opposite (resize without maintaining aspect ratio).

I must've been drunk when I was scaling the objects. Could we change the Ctrl-drag to Alt-drag, for resizing an object from its center?

I cannot test the Alt+xxxx in Word as I am on a laptop with no keypad.
But the xxxx (the Unicode code) then Alt+x method works.
Type 2022 then Alt-x and you have a bullet.
This also works in other Windows apps such as LibreOffice, etc.

The only thing which seems to work in APub is entering the Unicode codes.
First type Alt+U to get in the Unicode mode.
Then type U+2022 (Unicode code for a bullet)
Then type Alt+U again and the bullet will appear.

It would be really nice if the Alt+x method worked in Affinity applications as it is more universal.

I tried to enable Num Lock as @walt.farrell suggested and I can create the special characters with the hotkeys (Alt + 0XXX keys). Apparently we have to enable Num Lock in Affinity software, which is not necessary in other software

This is normal. All of those fonts have the same .notdef glyph.
Bodoni MT and Book Antiqua come with MS Office and have not changed in many years.
The issue is not the fonts.
And the Alt+code has been a part of the Windows operating system for many years.
(those codes are the decimal character codes for the old Windows-1252 encoding)

Something is happening on your system which is interfering with the Windows Alt+code feature which is then inputting the odd codes like above.
Do you have any other app which may be capturing those keystrokes?

I don't think another app was interfering with the Character Map hotkeys, because I can use the hotkeys in other applications, apart from Microsoft Word. I have deactivated Microsoft PowerToys, yet the problem persists

The squares are the .notdef glyph (not defined) which is appropriate as U+0013 and U+0011 do not exist in the Arial font.

This is odd, and may be a clue. This should definitely work in Word.

What keyboard layout are you using in Windows?

The special characters also appear as outlined boxes with Bodoni MT, Book Antiqua and Times New Roman fonts in all Affinity software on my WIndows 11 system.

As for my keyboard layout, I set the [Time & language] > [Typing] > [Advanced Keyboard Settings] > I tried both [Use Language List] and [English (United States) - US] options

Works fine for me on my Win 11 machine, using Designer (now at 2.0.4) with the Arial font and any of the characters you mentioned:

    image.png.0d5f13bff12b4970c15ac4d8cb1a4f5a.png

As with other applications , it does require use of the numeric keypad on my keyboard, and Numlock.

It's weird, because I tried it with Arial, Bodoni MT, Book Antiqua and Times New Roman fonts. All those hotkeys I mentioned generated outlined rectangles instead of the correct special characters in all Affinity software

My favorite feature of the Affinity suite is that it's not a monolithic bloated app with hundreds of panels, tools, and menu commands. (Yes, I'm looking at you, VectorStyler and Ill-Frustrator!)

    Focus is a virtue.

Seamless switching between the three apps on the fly via StudioLink personas or File > Edit In… is the intended Affinity workflow. And I, for one, like it this way. ;)

I used to make all layout design in Adobe Illustrator for individual pages and Adobe InDesign was just used to combine them. I will just use VectorStyler if I don't make a book, because I'm so used to the old workflow

Why not just do your work in Publisher?

It has everything from Designer except the Export Persona and the Pixel Persona. If you also have Photo, then Publisher has everything from Designer except the Export Persona, and you can just switch to Designer when you need that.

I thought Publisher is more akin to Adobe InDesign? I was used to make layout design in Adobe Illustrator for individual pages and Adobe InDesign was just used to combine them

  9. I cannot insert special characters (Character Map) in all Affinity apps on Windows, using the Alt + 0149, Alt + 163, Alt + 169, Alt + 174 and Alt + 176 hotkeys.

I can do it in other applications (Notepad, Notepad++, WPS Office, Libre Office and VectorStyler), except Microsoft Word.

My operating system is Windows 11 Home Single Language 64-bit (10.0, Build 22000).

This is the first time I installed Affinity software on my PC and the version is 2.0.3. I have restarted the PC after the installation is done.

Try to reuse one from Publisher in Designer, copy/paste one over between the apps. Or as a workaround however, always create the frame text with visual tabstops then in Publisher and take/copy the resulting textframe afterwards over to Designer then.

It doesn't work. I will just make a request for the feature, because it's very important for a graphic design application and it's available in Adobe Illustrator/ VectorStyler

    And it doesn't work, strange!

Maybe you test with another font and some other glyph/sign alt keycode if it works at all for you. - If it does not work, use the Glyph Panel way I decribed above, drag the wanted bullet char from the Glyph panel and copy/paste it's selection from the text then always.

I tested it using Bodoni MT, Book Antiqua and Times New Roman fonts. I still get the rectangle instead of a bullet point. Unfortunately, I would have to use Glyph Browser or just use VectorStyler if I don't make a book with Designer/ Publisher

Basically it would behave the same on Windows as far as you can alter the default setting for the FrameTextRuler option there too.

However, here are two files one created with APub and one with ADe, try to open both of these (also the Publisher file one) with your Win Designer version, in order to see if the FrameText in there will be shown with rulers (?). - You will have to select the frame text layer in the layers panel and the FrameText tool in the tools bar, in order to make the rulers hopefully then appear. - In case they do appear (aka it works) you should keep a working file then as a template for frame text rulers (maybe making an asset group for that then and drag it inside the asset panel, so you can then always reuse it).

I can see the visual tab stop ruler in Publisher, by turning on the View > Show Text Ruler. But there is no such thing in Designer

  13. 1 hour ago, v_kyr said:

As I said above before, if you would enable that option then for ADe then yes. - On your Win box if you have Publisher too, then setup a FrameText with rulers there and copy/paste that over into your ADe and look if that keeps the rulers then showing up!

Those tabstops on frame rulers would too be draggable in Affinity apps ...

Thanks for the trick on Mac. I will make a new thread to ask for the tab stop feature for Designer

That seems odd. Arial definitely contains a glyph for that. You shouldn't have to set anything special, as the alt code functionality is part of Windows, not the Affinity suite.

Yes, it's weird because I have never installed Affinity Designer on my PC before. This is how it looks like on my PC, using both Artistic Text Tool and Frame text Tool:

    https://ibb.co/3sxQkvk

I just made a bullet point in VectorStyler and Notepad++, so this problem is strange

I don't use Windows thus can't tell you where initial app settings are hidden there or if it's maybe a compressed dat-file there.

I also don't know how those set tabstops in a graphical manner, maybe you show some screenshots from those in order for people to see what you mean with "in a graphical user friendly way".

These visual tab stops are draggable in VectorStyler:

    Draggable Tab Stops in VectorStyler

Is there such feature in Affinity Designer?
