  1. Hi everyone,

I am new to photo editing. I have an image and I need to "lift" its value so the mid value is around 0.5. What is the best way to do this in Affinity Photo?

To further illustrate what I am trying to do, I have attached a sample image for your viewing. I need to set the the overall mid value to 0.5. What is the optimal approach to doing this so the overall image quality remains in tact? Thank you.

edit: I realized I did not provide enough image. Updated with source file and better description.

    Kind regards,

    Jonathan

Apologies, I misread and thought you were on your iPad.

The 'Hardness Jitter' is the same setting and you can set it to tilt from the dropdown menu. However the Tilt option does require a Tablet pen.

This link should provide more info https://affinity.help/designer/en-US.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Painting/pixel_modify.html?title=Modifying pixel brushes

Hi @EmT. Thank you very much for your assistance. I have tested the hardness tilt at 0, 50, and 100 respectively. It feels like there is no tangible difference in how the brush is behaving, unless I am missing something? I will read through the link you have shared to better understand how to configure brushes. I've attached a picture for you to see.

Edit: I forgot to add that I am using a Cintiq Pro 24".

    Kind regards.

So we meet again @jonathanm0… As you've undoubtedly figured out, Photoshop and Affinity Photo treat channels quite differently, at least insofar as manipulating/editing them. In order to do what you want, take the following steps:  (1) If you are using the Red channel from a single layer, right click on entry in the Channels panel that contains the name of the layer followed by Red. In other words, if your photo is called "Background" then right click on the "Background Red" entry in the Channels panel. It should be the 4th line from the top. (2) If you have more than one layer – perhaps a Background layer and an adjustment or two – right click on the "Composite Red" entry at the top of the Channels panel. (3) Having right clicked on one of those choices, choose "Create Spare Channel" from the drop-down menu. (4) Make sure that the correct layer is selected in the Layers panel. This will be the one with the Red channel filled but with the empty Green and Blue channels. (5) Right click on the "Spare Channel" you just created at the bottom of the Channels panel. (6) Assuming that the layer you're aiming at is called "Background" choose "Load to Background Green" from the drop down menu. (7) Then, right click that same Spare Channel entry and choose "Load to Background Blue" from the drop down.

You should now have duplicated the Red channel into the Blue and Green channels. The layer should now be a monochrome image (since all 3 channels are the same). You can go ahead and delete the Spare Channel, as it has served its purpose.

Hi @smadell! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Thank you so much for the detailed response. I have saved this into my notes for reference. It worked perfectly.

Is it possible to delete the Alpha Channel?

    Kind regards.

    Hi @jonathanm0

If you select a brush e.g. Natural Pencil 4B, then go into the edit menu and under Hardness select 'Tilt'. This will register the tilt of the pencil and adjust the hardness accordingly.

The size of the stroke can be adjusted by setting the size controller to Pressure or Velocity etc.

    I hope this helps.

Hi @EmT. Thank you very much for your response. It looks like we have two different interfaces? When I go to brush editing, I have no Hardness setting under Dynamics. Just Hardness Jitter. I attempted to modify it but the brush doesn't appear to work any differently.

    Thank you!

  5. Hi everyone,

I am working with large images, 8k, 16k, etc, and need to process them into various channels. With this file in particular, the Green and Blue channels are empty. I need to copy my Red channel into them. I was searching the forums and discovered from an older post that you have to make a spare channel. I have tried to paste into it, without success. Is there something else I need to be doing here? The source provider of these images uses Photoshop and they literally copy and paste into the channels, which I am unable to do.

    Kind regards.

  6. Hello everyone,

I am new to digital painting. I am trying to replicate overhand grip, drawing with the side of my pencil, similar to life drawing with charcoal pencils. Can Affinity Photo do this? I've attached a test sample from Corel Painter for your viewing to see what I mean. Soft broad side strokes and finer thin lines as the pencil approaches writing position.

The pencils I have tested so far stay rather thick and have no sort of gradient from the tip to the base, if that makes any sense? Are there any brushes I should look at or somehow modify to replicate this?

Here are some more demonstrations to further explain. So far on my iPad, the Proko Pencil for Infinite Painter works wonderfully out of the box. You can see it here.

  7. Hi everyone. I am new to Photo editing and do not have much experience with Affinity Photo or equivalent. I am trying to convert a 32 bit exr image from Texturing XYZ to 16 bit tiff for use in 3d applications. My instructor has set requirements that the background colour must be set to a value of 50. When I convert my exr to tiff by using the export feature, my value then jumps to 74 as illustrated in the attached screenshot. It was also suggested that perhaps my colour profile was somehow switched.

Is there a way to maintain the value of 50 when exporting/converting to tiff? Or will I have to somehow process this manually? Thank you kindly.

    Hi @jonathanm0

    Welcome to the forum.

Could you send over the file you are having issues with so we can try to replicate it. I can send a private upload link if you prefer.

    Hi @EmT.

I have attached the file for your viewing. I left an example layer in the file for you to see. This happens in any new blank file for me.

    Thank you very much.

  9. Hi everyone,

I am a new Affinity Photo user. I have the software on both OS X and Windows 10. I am encountering issues while using the paint brush on a new layer. I have attached a gif of the behaviour in question, and a screenshot of my settings (which are default). I am using a Wacom Cintiq 24". Whenever I try to paint, I get this weird boundary/clipping effect. I am not sure what is going on or how to fix it.

I am grateful to any suggestions you may have.

    Thank you.
