  1. I'm going to apologise in advance. Tool consistency vs "What you'll actually spend more time doing". The current MAS version has (I believe) the correct behaviour. esc goes back to the selection tool. Most people are less likely to drop many text items in sequence. Normally it's type for a logo, perhaps a paragraph or two. Keeping the tool active until a second esc just makes it feel a bit broken still.

Clicking outside is sufficient for this IMO.

In an attempt to not start an argument, any chance (I know..) we could get this as a preference? Or perhaps a mode of the text tool.

    ...sorry again.

  2. Just noticed theres a styling inconsistency with the stroke panel compared to the others. It's the same panel as the flyout on the top left but looks very odd when opened along side the other panels, should it look somewhat like the layers panel? Also while I'm on the flyout vs. panel thing, just a poke about getting a panel-ised version of the gradient flyout?

    Ta!

  3. Yes, sorry... and they'll remain quite incremental and small until Photo is launched: We've been running two branches for the last month or so - a branch for Photo which has a matching Designer (so the changes must be small and not introduce any problems so that we can concentrate on bringing Photo to release - this is the current branch that Designer Beta and Photo Beta are being built from) and an active development branch where larger changes are still being made to Designer. After Photo is released we will merge the branches together and then get back on course with the larger changes we're making for Designer.

So there's a reason they're small changes for now - the difference between what we're actually implementing and what you can see we're implementing is large because right now we can't afford for anything which needs significant testing to enter the public-facing codebase... For App Store deployment, we need to keep Designer and Photo at the same version so they need to be stable at exactly the same time.

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Knew it...

Anything you can tease us with?

  4. That is a little different to "Hundreds". The only thing I've noticed about the viewport is things render faster depending on how far away you are, like a region of interest. You could also try grouping some of these? That seems to have some effect on viewport performance.

Affinity dev should have a good idea of performance caps but I'm fairly certain I've seen affinity handle more objects than that.

  5. On the Z-Blur front, what's the plan for this filter? I'd love to see it rolled into the lens blur with a few more options:

    • Selecting a channel from the current image
    • The ability to move the focal plane and focal point
    • A few more in tool adjustments, not all depth passes will come in with the full 0-1 values so maybe an inline option to move the black and white points.

It's a start though and overall a really good beta :)

  6. I'm not sure text on a path is in photo, but it is in designer. And it's really easy! Just draw a path, hover the text tool near the line until you get a little wavy bezier icon below the cursor, click and type. I've attached a video.

I'm not sure if this feature will make it into photo, it seems like a bit of mission creep to me, but maybe one of the Affinity devs has an answer.

  7. So here’s a big one :)

Illustrator has some object selection tools, like selecting all objects of a certain type or some that share similar attributes, like fill colour. It’s very useful, but it could be done better.

It’d be great to have fuzzy and conditional searching, provided you store enough information about objects. So you could do a search not only name but by object attributes. This would select all matching objects on the canvas to be moved, grouped, released, isolated etc. It opens up a huge world of possibilities on large documents, in a post UX features world this could be a world beater. It’s all well and good sketch having it’s symbols and shared styles, but on huge, complex UI documents... Well, yanno…

You could do things like “All objects with X fill colour” or “All rectangles X wide” it gets even more exciting if you could make fuzzy searches like “All objects approx X wide” or “Red cogs at approximately X coordinate”

A brucey bonus is if you guys we’re to save attributes like an object that is a duplicate. So if you had power duplicated a shape you could select all of them at once.

“But what to do with these selections?” I hear no one say.

Well! Save them. If you have a few hundred objects selected, you can save the selection to be recalled and modified later. Also you could manually select objects on the canvas to save to a set.

  8. You've kind of contradicted yourself Ronnie, Illustrator drops the text tool once you're done. The switching is still the main issue I think, removing that will solve a lot of issues. I think keeping the text tool active until you dismiss it would be almost as much a muscle memory freak out for many as the current situation.

But let's see what it's like in the beta :)

  9. This all sounds so positive! I was going to put in a very similar request but retrograde has nailed it :) I'd also vote for the more complicated solution.

I've got a couple of cents to throw in, ever so slightly off topic(Sorry in advance), but the make sense in a broader context:

    • If it's application wide, would this also apply to editing non-destructive compounds? If you've got an opacity slider you could just jump it to 30% for the constituents and the result at 100% opacity. Very slick.
    • I've always been a fan (Sorry) of the illustrator/fireworks breadcrumb. I don't like spending time in the layer stack unless I have to and it gives me a good idea of where I am. (Not sure how to represent this if you had multiple parents/children off the top of my head)

Also with Miguels great ideas, it'd be great if you could specify selection sets, so you could instantly recall selections to isolate. I think selection sets are a great general concept, but I'll do a separate thread on it so as not to derail this one too much.
