  1. Not sure if I'm being excessive but I'd love to see a performance bump for the paint mixer brush. I love the idea of opening a big canvas and just starting to paint with it. But on big canvases it's pretty slow, I understand that this tool must be far more expensive than standard paint but I'd love it to be faster, I've attached a video showing the performance I'm getting on a 6k file.

For the record I'm on a 12-core Mac Pro (Dustbin) with 64gb of RAM.

..never bloody pleased are we? But in my endless showing off and blabbing about photo, this is a feature that seems to get a lot of people excited.

  2. I'd vote for custom icons. Perhaps they're lying around in the package somewhere...hrmm...

@ronnyb - My point was not 'colourful is better' just that in a complex system colour aids recognition. Especially if you are a little clever and group related functionality with the same palette. These are tools after all, the more efficient the better. Form after function and all that.

  3. Linux users not spending money isn't strictly true, a few posts up someone mentioned VFX and 3D(not to mention the games industry). Effectively the movie world runs on Linux and there are an awful lot of potential seats out there. BUT (and it's a big but) you need to have certain (incredibly specific) features and a certain degree of pipelineability (python) to get anywhere with those guys, they are very well oiled machines. Interestingly, Adobe must have tens of thousands of seats in this world and there must be a good amount of financial incentive to port their software to Linux. Even then, with all of Adobe's resources, they won't. For consumer accessible software there really is little reason to develop for Linux, the market for day to day users just isn't there. Sad, but true.

  4. Actually while we're on the topic, I agree with Paekke, swapping tools (and brushes) is a bit rubbish, UNLESS you do want a different brush for subtraction (which I often do) in which case it makes sense OR when you are on a mask (with the regular brush active) you could pop an additional brush button for the subtracting brush. Keeping the 'x' swap. Best of both worlds.

...Sorry for the stream of consciousness

  5. It's a nice idea but I couldn't disagree more.

    Here's my take:

When you see flat, monochromatic interfaces with flat icons, the majority of cases it is a mobile or simple gateway or limited function application.

Within a piece of software with a wide array of functionality you NEED colour. You also need dimensionality to define boundaries between panels and gangs of different, complex controls.

An important part of desktop software design is hierarchy and creating conventions for different areas of the application. Buttons of less or similar function share some consistent style (in AP, look at the adjustment vs. Tool icons, for example) and limiting a palette just makes it needlessly more difficult.

There's got to be function before form and so far flat UI for full blown application ls just doesn't cut it, it's a trend and rightly so.

  6. Petar, I think you're going about this all wrong. Focus is key, and the workflows differ between types of work. Theres a lot of illustrator-esque functionality in PS nowadays but I'd still never dream of doing vector work in photoshop, the workflow is all wrong.

It's not a problem to be solved, it's just the nature of using tools. It's like saying "I like this drill, if only it could saw things too".

Agreed RE: photoshop. It's a bloated, horrible behemoth that I have actively wanted to ditch for several years now. I think the affinity boys are going to knock it out of the park and the idea of a shared codebase is music to my ears. This is how to make software. Well done chaps.

  7. I'm quite old school and in illustrator I wouldn't spend a long time noodling in the layer stack. But I've got my current workaround. I tend to lock layers a little less and using alt click selections to ignore the object currently under the cursor. But it's not ideal.

What I'd love to see is selection sets, on-the-fly saveable selections of objects you can recall, lock or export in one go. Now thats a power feature!

  8. I've got a super simple request just to speed things up a little

When creating a new document, the ok button should have focus, so you can create documents without having to use a mouse. Tabbing behaviour should be the same (Starting from the top) with the exception that pressing tab while on the page width input should go to page height without first going to the portrait checkbox. The checkboxes should gain focus afterward, as they are less frequently used.

Similarly for the export box, most often you'll be exporting at the same size as the document.

Tiny stuff but the nickels and cents add up :)
