Dreamweaver is a train wreck. It becomes worse with each new release, and the latest one (2017) is a real mess with that half-hearted Brackets integration. I left Dreamweaver years and years ago. Most coders did the same: DW does not even show up in any of the user statistics anymore (for example: http://stackoverflow.com/research/developer-survey-2016

Adobe should just bury it - leave it to Adobe to destroy good products (Freehand, Fireworks, Director, Dreamweaver).

I work predominantly in Netbeans myself, with Notepad++ and Atom on the side for certain tasks. And PineGrow for a more visual environment that is still very code friendly.

To replace Dreamweaver, have a look at the PineGrow <-> Atom combo: bidirectional real-time updates while you work. A much better workflow compared to DW. It's pretty awesome. https://pinegrow.com/

Oh, this wish is over two years old... I really like the dark UI, especially when I work at the evening in low light situations. But I must also admit, that in bright daylight condition a light grey UI is far better and homogenic to the eyes. It would be really helpful if the gamma could be set to a much brighter UI, where the caption goes from white to black. This is just a color reversal snapshot, only to show how 'smooth' black text on light grey is. It should be easy to implement this feature. +1 from me too :)

Affinity would have to compete with the likes of DaVinci Resolve and Fusion - a tough nut to crack indeed.

DaVinci Resolve is a brilliant non-linear video editor, and the industry standard colour grading tool.
Fusion is a nodal compositor for visual effects - superior to After Effects for that type of work. Not as good for motion graphics, though.

Both are used in feature film production. Can't get any better than this, because the great thing is: both are free to work with up to ultra HD footage!

    Get them here:
    https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/ca/products/davinciresolve
    https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/ca/products/fusion

I would advice Serif to stay away from trying to compete in the professional video business.

I would, however, very much welcome a Flash type competitor - but even in that segment the competition is quite tough: 2016 has been very interesting for animators: Moho, ClipStudio, and of course the open sourced OpenTOonz (which is getting better with every new release). Krita also includes animation now, and is finally Mac ready!

well, your Illustrator version is not true perspective either, which would take the actual stroke into account as well. :-P

All jokes aside, I agree it would be very helpful if AD supports keeping the corners consistent. Other applications can do this, and working without this option is a bit of a pain at times.

One thing that bugs me in a lot of image editors (excepting one or two so far) is that the curves panel/palette/dialog cannot be scaled.

    Please allow for this.

    Hi,

I am another user interested in Affinity Photo as an alternative to Photoshop.

I have been familiarizing and playing with it after installing the beta version for Windows on my computer.
Overall it is OK. It is somewhat different from Photoshop and this will require me to go through some learning, all of which is fair and expected.
A part from bugs that need fixing, I think there is space for better implementation of some functions some of which are being reported in this forum.

I am adding one myself for the Curves function (under Tones in the Develop Persona).
Unless I am missing something, in its current implementation the curves function of Affinity allows to place and move points in the curve but does  not show the values of the input and output coordinates of the points. This makes very difficult (in fact, almost impossible) to exactly reproduce a similar curve profile on different photos. Photoshop not only shows the input and output values of each selected point of a curve, but also allows to directly enter such values in the corresponding fields without having to drag each point.
Also, similar to Photoshop, I think that showing a curve and its corresponding hystogram overlapped in the same graph helps to much better evaluate the effect of modifying a curve.

I hope this and other practical improvements will be implemented in Affinity to make its current and already quite impressive set of features even stronger.

    Regards,

I have a couple of IxD related question for the Affinity developer team:
Is an experienced Interaction/UX designer part of your team? Did you perform usability tests with test participants right from the start using prototypes? Do you currently perform usability tests? Just curious about your development workflow in regards to usability design - this is not meant in a negative manner. When I design GUIs, games, and sites I almost always perform usability tests with test participants. These may either be formal or informal, depending on the scope of the job at hand.

Herbert123 got a reaction from Affinity Jack in Perlin Noise (Filter Options) - Affinity Photo
The devs could take this much, much further, in my opinion. Photoshop's clouds filter, while useful, is a complete joke in regards to control. Affinity Photo's Perlin Noise is a good start, but the competition out there is fairly stiff nowadays.

    Compare the following implementation:

Live filter, contrast and intensity, and other parameters such as detail, and X and Y repetition to fine-tune the cloud/noise effect. Multiple live noise layers can be combined freely, and even cloned/instanced.

Integrate multiple noise generators, and allow for custom colours.

Allow for custom presets and gradients.

And why not take it all the way, and integrate a non-destructive multi-layered texture generator with built-in embossing and lighting? And allow these textures to be used as fills?

Affinity devs: dig deeper! Go way beyond Photoshop! Others have done this already.

It would be nice if we could simply right-mouse click either the ruler, or an input field, and change the unit on the fly.

Just for the competition with Wacom I thank Microsoft for the Surface Studio. It is about time Wacom gets some serious competition - let's see if they can keep up those inflated prices.

This is only the first Studio generation - I'll be looking forward to its evolution.

As for Mac hardware: as much as it pains me to say this, I feel Apple stopped catering for creative professionals years ago. It was the creative community that kept Apple afloat during the hard times all those years ago, and it is exactly that community Apple is no longer interested in developing hardware for anymore. A shame.

Have you looked at the 'More...' options for AD's GIF export? If you restrict the number of colours to 32 or fewer, you will reduce the file size considerably.

The only two reasons to use GIF nowadays is either for animation support or if your graphic is extremely tiny (=< hundreds of bytes, with only a few colours), in which case GIF produces smaller file sizes. (Of course, as Mr. Lucky pointed out, another reason might be that an older existing popular GIF file must be replaced online).

In other cases, PNG yields smaller file sizes in 99% of cases, and is the best choice. It does also depend on the optimization tool that is used. For PNG ColorQuantizer is currently the best tool.

    @Ben Sounds good.

A couple of questions about the current implementation of guides in AD:
Currently guides can only be dragged from the rulers when the move tool is active. It is a hassle to switch tools if a quick guide is needed while working in a different tool mode. Will this be reconsidered? Guides seem to live in their own invisible layer. Often it is handy (almost required) to have multiple guide systems with different colours in the same document. When the guide grid creator option is added, will it be possible to have multiple layered grid systems as well?

Been a bit on a hiatus with AD these last couple of months, and I had expected a simple distort or warp tool would have been implemented by now? Seems like this ought to be part of an illustration package's fundamental tool set, in my opinion.

I would not be able to switch to AD for vector work without it. So I'd like to add my voice in here: please add it. At the very least allow the user to CTRL-drag a corner point to distort the object.

Time does not stand still - even 3d software like Blender now offers (vector based) freehand drawing tools, and the one thing that stands out are the excellent sculpting tools to affect existing lines with custom fall-offs and free transformation pivot points. A bit like the traditional bitmap warp tools on steroids.

    Check these videos out:

I think it is time that vector illustration software developers start to rethink their traditional tool set at this point in time. All 3d software offers sculpting tools nowadays, and this makes the creative process MUCH easier, fluid, and intuitive. 2d vector illustration encounters similar challenges compared to 3d modeling - sculpting took 3d asset creation to the next level, and is now adapted industry-wide as a fundamental workflow.

How about AD offering similar sculpting tools to the 2d illustrator, and taking 2d vector creative illustration tools into the 21st century? :)
