  1. As someone who used to write programs and applications, I hate "app" too. But not as much as I hate "coder".
  2. +100 on this. Just give me a grid - like every other photo editing app. Call it something else if you must. I used to be a musician. When we worked out a "cover" of a hit tune we didn't actually copy any wrong notes in the original.
  3. Yes, "Band-pass mask" sounds like it might be the thing. I'll have to research it. It's not clear to me how it would differentiate between edges and dust, but I'll find out. Thanks!
  4. I'm doing focus-stacked shots of some small gem stones. Dust is the enemy, and you never win - I think the dry winter air is part of the problem. I wipe the stone off with a damp microfiber but but when I look at the images, dust has returned, and it sparkles. 😞 Fortunately AP's Dust and Scratch Removal works well, taking out 80-90% of the dust. But it also softens the many sharp clean edges on a faceted stone. I try to bring those back with the High Pass filter but something is inevitably lost. I'm thinking there should be a clever way to mask the Dust Removal to avoid the edges found by High Pass. Maybe the High Pass filter can be used to produce a mask for the Dust Removal tool. Or something like that. Anyone have ideas?
  5. I'm doing projects where I rotate images a lot. Many (most?) apps have visible 'rotate' buttons, AP does not, I have to go to the menu. Sometimes I want to rotate an image multiple times and decide what works; that's a lot of trips to the menu item. The hot key is 'crtl-al-shift-up' - you gotta be kidding me. Yes I could remap it, but I can't remember hot keys across multiple apps anyway. I'm a visual guy. I just want a visible "rotate" button. Is there a way I can create a custom button in AP?
  6. No doubt there will be more like me - coming from other photo editing programs that have an obvious and conventional "Grid" function, and expect AP's "grid" to be similar. And it looks like in AP, photographers probably want "Column Guides" instead. So making the "Grid" immediately visible does run the risk of getting photographers to start using a pixel grid, which they probably don't want. It's a can't-win situation, I get it - you don't want to change the terminology now. I'm just making the point that photographer using less complex tools in the past may have some initial confusion in AP. So be it. It's a fantastic power tool, with a significant learning curve.
  7. @debrapicher, thanks for that clarification. Really, I'm ok with "Column Guides". Obviously AP is a lot more than just a "photo editor", it's part of the whole document thing, and for an ordinary photographer like me it's considerably over-featured. So be it!
  8. Column guides, I get. Those work ok. The grid in the crop tool is fine, but confined to that tool. The other "guides" and "grid" are what have baffled me so far. Just ranting I guess, seems a bit complicated for a photo editing application.
  9. Still not getting it. Column guides work, they're a bit weird. But I've found no way to make either "Guides" or "Grid" show up, have toggled all sorts of options. Can't believe it's this difficult to show a basic composition grid in a photo editing program. The thirds grid in in Crop tool is fine, can't I display that somehow when I'm not cropping? Right now I'm using the Perspective tool. I want a grid to help me get things vertical and horizontal. I click "show grid" on the Perspective tool and the resulting grid tilts and skews to track my perspective adjustments - and that's useless.
  10. Oh you mean the Guides will stay consistent if I resize...? And I should just forget about Grid?
  11. So... "Guides" instead of "Grid"? Confused because I don't want to resize the canvas....
  12. Someone take pity on me - and tell me how to display a composition grid of thirds. I click Vew/Show grid. I get no grid. I Google and find out about View/Grid and Axis. I go there, click Show Grid, mode is Automatic. I get no grid. I go to Basic tab, get a very dense grid. I try increasing spacing, but it maxes out at 256px. I try changing Divisions to 3. Nothing changes. I go to Advanced tab, and see a hundred options I don't understand. I give up at this point. Is there a simple way to get a grid of thirds?
  13. I'll look at batch processing, thanks. Update: yes, that did the job quite easily.
  14. I no longer use PS Elements, as AF handles the old .PSDs just fine. But it's hard to browse folders containing a mix of PSD and AFPHOTO files. Windows Explorer shows thumbnails for the AFPHOTOs but not the PSDs. FastStone shows the PSDs but ignores the AFPHOTOs. Exposure X6 shows the PSDs, not the AFPHOTOs. And so on. It's a mess. I need a way to convert a bunch of PSDs to AFPHOTOs without the tedium of loading and saving each one manually. It sure would be great if AF had a scripting language, but it doesn't. Any suggestions?
  15. No worries. Text online is a treacherous medium and I've learned that the hard way. IMHO "spammer" is equivalent to "scammer", i.e. a malevolent intent is implied. Maybe I'm just dating myself.
  16. Ahhhh yes. That does the trick, thanks. Maybe I somehow unchecked it. Sorry but I have to ask: what's the possible utility of this obscure feature? IMHO the checkbox should be labelled "Yes, let me actually see what I'm doing here".
  17. Ah.. now here's the strange part. I just revisited this and yes, that does work BUT you can't see the parts that you previously cropped out until after you enlarge the rectangle and click "Apply". You have to enlarge/adjust the rectangle "blind" and just guess at the original extents of the image. Which is why I assumed the crop was destructive. Weird because I really think I remember it working differently....
  18. Didn't do any "Rasterize and Trim" - don't even know what that is. Was it an option I somehow engaged in the Crop tool? What does "rasterize" even mean, if I'm editing a digital photo? Haven't removed the background layer. I just started editing a photo by cropping it, realized later I couldn't change that crop by using the cropping tool again; I could only reduce the crop further. However, "Unclip Canvas" does restore the original - although it adds a thin transparent border around it (?). So thanks for that option.
  19. It's a basic thing, but I've ended up confused about AP cropping. Is it always destructive, or is there some way to do a non-destructive crop that I can change later? I searched the forum but I see odd and contradictory posts about cropping in AP.
