  1. Watched a couple of the videos and see AP iPad does include the 360VR still editing feature. Is this the very same as in the desktop version? If so, I don't have anything on the iPad that does that and that feature is certainly attractive on it's own. I saw that you can save in the .afphoto native format to continue your edit on the desktop AP. Does that go the other way too, ie. save a .afphoto desktop project with layers and such, then open the same file on the iPad version? I would assume so, but I just want to confirm since there are some features in the desktop version that aren't in the iPad version. In the share option for exporting, is AirDrop supported? Or, is there a direct way to go straight from the iPad export and into desktop AP? Or, do you need to save somewhere first and then open separately in AP after you've saved? Lastly, can you give a rough estimate how long the launch discount will last? There are some pricey sound apps I wanted to pick up too and was hoping maybe there'd be some discounted iTunes card deals coming up for father's day ;)
  2. At first I was surprised and excited to see the launch of the iPad version. And, I would've thought it'd be a no-brainer for me. Yet, I'm somewhat hesitant. I've owned the Mac version of Photo and Designer for a couple years now I think. I've watched most of the tutorial videos for Photo, but I'm likely several behind. I love what I discover Photo is capable of, but when it comes time to actually do any real editing, I keep falling back to Photoshop. Not because I think it's all that much better, but because I've used it for at least a couple decades now and I know it. Haven't really taken to Photo, but I desperately want to move on from Adobe and be 100% in the Affinity camp. I've also found editing my images on the iPad to be a MUCH more pleasant experience overall, compared to being tethered to a laptop or desktop using Photoshop. Granted, not quite as precise and difficult to calibrate anything with much certainty. Yet, I find Snapseed mostly gets the job done very well for most of my needs. It's also a very stable and mature product. I also use FilterStorm Neue some as well, which is also very good, mature, and stable. How does Affinity Photo iPad edition compare to using Snapseed? I'd be using it on an iPad Air 2. Will likely upgrade to the new Pro ipads, but will wait for more reviews before I buy one. What are the main advantages to using Affinity Photo iPad over Snapseed and FilterStorm? These apps are no where near the file size as AP's 1.2GB size. Why is the app size so large? Also hesitant about all the crashing reports and some RAW files not being recognized. Even though I've watched most of the tutorials for the Mac version of AP, if I don't use what I learned all the time, I forget it. I haven't found Affinity Photo to really be all that intuitive coming from Photoshop, so when I do force myself to go back to it after a couple months, I've forgotten how to do anything in it. I'm curious if perhaps having the pleasure of editing on an iPad, using Affinity Photo iPad, would keep me in practice with the UI so that when I need to use the desktop version I won't have forgotten everything. Are they very similar or nearly identical in overall function and UI layout? Anyone know how long the sale will last?
  3. What?! STILL no auto-trace in the latest version1.5?! Dang it. I bought this over a year ago and thought it'd be developed by now. Guess I'll have to keep trudging away in Illustrator. :(
  4. That worked. Thanks! I thought I'd tried everything... but I guess I was wrong. ;)
  5. Google made the Nik Collection free and I just installed it. Very impressive collection. When I installed, it only gave me a choice of Photoshop, Bridge, or Lightroom as the host application. So, I picked Photoshop. I'm trying to add the Nik Collection as plugins for AP, but nothing I've tried in the AP Photoshop Plugins Preferences panel works. Shouldn't these be accessible in AP? If so, how exactly do you set it up? Thanks in advance
  6. I was wondering... If you pulled a still out of your video in FinalCutPro X, then imported it into AF... made a bunch of edits, then exported the 3D LUT for use in FCPX, or any other motion application that accepts LUTs... then applied your custom AF LUT to the original video... would that work? I've tried importing my commercial 3rd party video 3D LUTs into AF for use on a still and that worked fine. Just wondering if you can go back the other direction. If so, what would be the best workflow doing this, so that you kept everything in the appropriate color space for video?
  7. Yeah, I'm very new to AP, but I've been through all the videos now and starting to force myself to use it instead of PS. In PS, I mostly use Smart Sharpening. As I'm beginning in AP, I've been using the Detail Enhancement in the develop persona... then cleaning up noise if needed while I'm there. Works fine, but I'm wondering why or why not it may be better to use AP Unsharp Mask, or Clarity, or High Pass instead.
  8. Thanks for the article, but I'm already very familiar with Photoshops's unsharp mask AND smart sharpening. Been using PS since version 2 many moons ago. What I don't know is how Affinity's Detail Enhancement in the Develop Persona is different and when/how it should be used instead of the traditional unsharp/smart sharp PS methods. I just tossed the "clarity" and "high pass" options in to make this a more general "sharpening" question, so I can see how you'd think that article might be helpful. However, Affinity is using what appears to be a different method in their "Detail Enhancement" that I've used, but don't know how it differs from the other methods.
  9. Hello, I've been mostly using the Detail Enhancement in the Develop Persona. If the amount of detail sharpening I add increases noise, then I just reduce noise within the same side panel. However, I'm curious what the difference in using Detail Enhancement for sharpening and some of the other methods like Unsharp Mask, High Pass, Clarity? I already watched the sharpening tutorial video, but it doesn't touch on why you'd use the latter methods over using Detail Enhancement within the develop persona. Which situations would you want to use any particular method?
  10. BTW: Your excellent videos really sell these products more than anything else. I'll watch them and go, "wow, I didn't know it could do that... and so easily." Then, I'll tell a friend about your apps, suggest they just check out a couple videos, and then every single person I've pointed to the videos have ended up buying the software too. Great stuff. Thanks!
  11. FYI: One of the great values for buying into the Affinity suite, has been these excellent tutorial videos. I like that you keep them short and easy to digest. And, they not only show me how to use the tools, but also give me creative ideas. I almost get just as thrilled to see a new tutorial video as I do with a software upgrade. :) Although I love that these are all reasonably short, but it'd be cool to see a few more of the longer project oriented varieties where you go through using several tools on one project.... like the 2 longer portrait retouching and composite project videos.
  12. Ah yes... I got it. Thanks! I wasn't using the original source image. I was selecting the new image as the source, then inferring the adjusted exported image. That didn't do anything. If I open a completely new image... then "infer" the original image that I adjusted/blended/etc. then "infer" the exported edited version of the original image... it mimics the look from the first image to the completely new image. Tried it. Works. Cool!
  13. That's cool, and yes... there should be a video about it... or at least an explanation in the Help. I'm trying this and can't get it to work. Can you break this down a bit more clearly. After I apply a blend mode for example and export... do I export as a jpg? Or as a LUT? I get what it's doing... I'm just not clear on the procedure. Thanks!
  14. I see that in Affinity Photo I can import my LUTs from my video packages and apply them using the 3D LUT Adjustment Layer. There's a selection to Load LUT, but underneath it is another option called "Infer LUT". It doesn't allow me to select any 3D LUTs, but will allow me to select images. However, it doesn't appear to do anything at all. What is "Infer LUT" for, and how is it used?
  15. Sometimes when I'm in a hurry, or just want to do a quick edit of an image, I'll open the image in Photoshop and first try all three Auto Tone, Auto Contrast, Auto Color. Often one of those gets it almost perfect without me having to do much else other than use the "Fade Auto Tone", etc. down to 50% for example. In Affinity Photo, under the Colors menu, there's Auto Levels, Contrast, Colors, White Balance. I'm assuming these are essentially the same as the Auto Tone, Auto Contrast, Auto Color items in Photoshop? If so, is there a convenient way to dial down the auto function by percentage like in Photoshop? Without having to create another pixel layer, then controlling it with an opacity slider over the background image?
  16. Hi, So far, in my slow migration from a multi-decade Photoshop user, to Affinity Photo... I've pretty much figured out how to do most of the stuff I normally do in Photoshop. I like using Adobe Bridge to preview images with a large preview window that allows me to take a magnifying glass to details, see what the exposure and ISO was for a shot, etc. This way I can easily look between several images to decide which image is the best to edit from, instead of having to open them all up individually. At the moment, I can just keep using Adobe Bridge to preview and when I've selected the image I want to edit, I just control click and hover over "open with" with Affinity Photo selected to open the image in AP. But, if I want to get rid of Adobe altogether at some point, is there a better digital asset management app that does essentially the same thing as Adobe Bridge and works well with AP?
  17. I was playing around with the new Panorama feature and comparing it to Photoshop's Photomerge. Photoshop was slightly better at removing lens distortion... but I tried doing a multi-image stitch with about 8 images. Shot both horizontally and vertically along a linear horizon. I then loaded them up in AP to see how well it handled it. No problem at all! It's sorted them all out and did an almost perfect job in mere seconds. Then, I tried the same 8 images in PS photomerge and it failed miserably. I tried about 6 different setting to try to get better results and they were all horrible. And, it took about 5 times longer for each attempt than AP. Very impressive AP!!!
  18. Sketch feature thingy? I don't see anything anywhere similar to a "Sketch Feature" in AP. Which feature are you referring to?
  19. Ok. I tried again. As a test I made all the same settings with it set to serif/apply tone curve. Exported out a jpg. Then changed it to apple/apple tone curve. Closed. Reopened AP, then opened the RAW file again and applied exact same settings. Then export jpg to compare each. Seems serif was a more aggressive tone curve that improved overall look. But apple did a better job at retaining detail with less aggressive noise reduction and slightly sharper detail. AP appeared to do a better job at correcting lens distortion. I know that's not very scientific. Is there one that should be better than the other? Or, is it just personal preference?
  20. Great upgrade! I've been doing the tutorials and really digging this software. Have been telling everyone I know who uses a mac and photoshop that they should give it a whirl. Regarding the new capability to choose your RAW engine... my choices are Serif and Apple RAW core. I tried both and can't really tell any difference visually or with speed. Is there any advantages of one over the other?
  21. It's all good. I went back and checked out your video (as well as your tutorial - good stuff) and your castle video is really behaving the same as my test was... you were just using the feature in a situation where it made more sense. The image I picked made no sense and my adjustments were too radical, so it confused rather than clarified. My fault. Also, I've since figured out more basics around the UI and getting more comfy with it all. Just should have reminding myself to stick with the basics for a bit, before venturing off into the more complex stuff. It's so tempting to throw in the towel and just stick with what I know in PS, but I'd really like to be completely free from PS within the next year. So far, I think Affinity Photo is my best shot at realizing that goal. :)
  22. Ok. Well, sorry. Didn't mean to "hurt your eyes". Just wanted to show quickly what I was talking about. I have no idea what the other fellow was referring to. I don't see any place to select "current layer" or "current layer and below". Even if he's talking about the inpainting and not an "inspirational tool" its not clear how that's related to the perspective distortion. Unless he's talking about repairing the transparent areas with it. But even then, I don't see why you'd need to create another layer. I give up on that one I think. I'm abandoning this one now. I'm just going through Affinity tutorial videos and didn't see one that was related to the castle example from the demo reel, so I thought I'd ask if there was one specifically related to that clip in the demo. Now I'm even more confused. Better go back to just sticking with the basic tutorials. Thanks for the help though. Much appreciated. I was hoping jumping from all my years with Photoshop might help this be more intuitive for me, but with terms like "persona" and such, I feel completely lost in this application to be honest. There's not nice way to preview your image selections like in Adobe Bridge. Once I've done something, it doesn't always let me undo or back up several steps like I can in Photoshop, or look at 5 steps back, then go back to the 10th action. Or, if there is... I haven't figured it out yet. I've actually tried to dive into this app a few times now, get frustrated... then just go back to what I know. Sorry if it sounds like I'm an idiot with Affinity Photo... but I guess I am. I don't want to have to stick with Photoshop, but maybe it's too hard to teach an old dog new tricks. ;) If I were starting fresh and didn't already know how to do all this stuff in Photoshop already, it'd be different I think. I'd be all over this app. But, I think I have too many years of PS knowledge that are going to be very hard to break free from. :(
  23. MBd, I don't see any of those interface elements, "inspiring tool"? "current layer/current layer and below"?
