_Th reacted to Chris B in Adjusted mask behaviour
Hi all, just to clarify, we are looking at making this true for Windows:
Left-Click adds Default Mask
Alt+Left-Click add Empty Mask
Right-Click shows extended Mask Menu
The issue with the strange highlight when holding down Ctrl and mousing over the mask options is a WPF issue that we cannot fix so this is a potential solution.

Thanks for the file and video @siapec. It's simply deselecting the text that's triggering it.
We've reproduced and logged it

_Th reacted to AngryKiwee in AVIF Support Needed.
Hey Guys,
AVIF support would be greatly appreciated. I know this has been a long requested feature since version 1 but still no word on when this will be implemented from Serif?
Thank you for JPEG XL but due to Google being just downright awkward and deprecating the XL codec in version M110 AVIF is really the only choice to use with current gen technology for higher quality smaller file sizes.
Can we please get an update on where things are with this?
Great job on the software. The future for these apps is very bright.
Kind regards
Mike

Thanks for this feedback - though getting a bit off topic from balanced dashed lines
It won't be in this update but a double line style is something we'll get on the list for future consideration. What we could also do with a a much better way to save any line styles you create yourself (with various dash patterns, arrow heads, multiple strokes in appearance, etc,) as well as us being able to provide a nice set of presets. These could potentially just be saved in other categories of the brushes panel within Designer persona. Again one for a future update...

Well said. This is quite a bit of UI regression, IMHO.

_Th reacted to mikeswarts in My greatest annoyance using Affinity Designer 2: The Aspect Ratio Lock Icon
I really, really like Affinity software, but I do make a lot of errors because of this little icon, which I can barely understand when I'm looking directly at it. I end up unintentionally changing the aspect ratio of elements (or not), blissfully ignorant until I've already made a bunch of additional changes and I no longer remember what the correct aspect ratio was supposed to have been.
Can you please make the visual cue *significantly* more obvious?
Update
I've made so many mistakes in V2 and I couldn't remember how V1 even looked, so I looked it up. The old indicator was an embarrassment of riches. No wonder I'm so mistake-prone using V2!

_Th reacted to Ash in Adjusted mask behaviour
Ok, I think probably the best compromise right now is that we just make it that:
- Single click: adds a mask
- Alt-click: opens the menu
The vast majority of the negative feedback with the V2 change was requiring two clicks to add a mask, so at least we get back to that behaviour. Only negative vs. what we have in the beta right now is will now require two clicks to add an empty mask (as that will be part of the menu options, along with range and compound masks)
The other possibilities of right click and long press I think we just want to give more consideration to, as both things we don't really have elsewhere on action buttons such as this.
Does this sound alright for now?

_Th reacted to Ash in Running headers
Apps: Affinity Publisher
Platforms: Windows, macOS and iPad
Running Headers are field which refers to text of a particular style elsewhere in the document. The most obvious cases are of a novel where the title of the chapter is repeated at the top of each page or of a dictionary where the first and last word defined on a given page are denoted in the header.
A Running Header is treated much the same as other fields such as creation date or current section and is found under Document Sections on the Fields Panel. The … button allows you to configure the header, whilst double-clicking the field’s name inserts a header with the current settings into the text. Once placed, the field’s settings can be edited from the right-click context menu’s Edit Field... option.
The Running Header’s settings allow you to choose which text will be chosen for the instance and how it will be presented. You can identify the paragraph or character style which should be tracked and whether you are interested in the “first on page” (which will show the first text of the tracked style on the current page or the previous text of the tracked style looking backwards through the document if none is present on the current page) or “last on page” which will show the last text of the tracked style on the current page or nothing if there is none on the current page.
N.B. Frames containing running headers are not considered as sources for tracked styles. This is because, in the case of using “last on page” it is entirely possible a running header would, when evaluated, push the source text off of the page and thus render itself invalid. Running headers are therefore intended to be placed in separate frames - usually as page headers.
The settings for constraining the running headers are much the same as for Cross-References. You can limit the number of words or stop on a specific character, include or exclude paragraph numbering and so on. Additionally, you can also apply case adjustments, None to leave the text as you found it, or Sentence, Title, Upper or Lower to reformat the text in the same manner as if you applied the text case commands to the original text.
N.B. At present, composition of fields doesn’t allow them to flow onto multiple lines. A running header which exceeds the length of a line of text will truncate to fit the frame.

_Th reacted to Ash in Dashed lines / stroke panel Improvements
Apps: All
Platforms: Windows, macOS and iPad
A few new features have been added to the stroke panel...
1. As has been commonly requested we have now added the ability to 'balance' dashed lines using a new toggle button on stroke panel. This means that the dash pattern is automatically rescaled between any cusps in a curve - making things such as corners of a rectangle or the start and end of a stroke look correct.
2. An additional dash and gap have now been added to build up more complex dashed line patterns (now giving you 3 dash and 3 gaps) making, among other things, two dot chain patterns possible. On desktop you can also click-drag the dash and gap indicator as shown to adjust the value.
3. A new button has been added to clear any arrowheads on a stroke - just making it more convenient than having to open the drop downs to set both ends to "None".

_Th got a reaction from Woodpig in Straight quotes to smart quotes
In Word (PC, at least), find/replace for both single and double quotes will replace both types of straight quotes with the appropriate smart/curly quotes. (Assuming the spacing before/after each is correct.) If I remember correctly InDesign find/replace does the exact same thing.
Would be extremely helpful if all Affinity apps would do the same.
As often comes from my Department of Redundancy Department soapbox, it’s all about the workflow: Professional apps must understand the professional’s workflow and streamline it as much as possible. Every point of friction reduces user satisfaction, which of course hurts sales and industry adoption.

_Th reacted to Woodpig in Straight quotes to smart quotes
Hi,
In Affinity Publisher I've imported the text of a Word doc, and all single and double quotes are straight, not smart. When I go to find and replace, the search cannot distinguish between opening and closing quotes - so FaR will replace everything with left (or right), but not both. Is there a way around this?
Thanks,
Gareth.

I’m curious, how did you not know there was a new version that came out on Nov. 9th when you were discussing it on Nov. 10th? Maybe I'm missing something obvious?
Even if you had not known of the upgrade, I think your position is overstated. At best. Since you seemingly knew of the new version on Nov. 10th, and the 40% discount was good through Jan. 25th, it's hard to see why you think you are being “treated like crap” or “hustled”—especially when there is now a 25% discount offer available. In the US, that equates to a whopping $27.50 more than you would could have paid with the 40% off offer that was available for 2 1/2 months. And that, for the universal license. There are quite a few things that need to be addressed or corrected in v2.x, but I don't think pricing is one of them.
I’m a fan (though not a fanboy) of Affinity for creating good, albeit not perfect, software for those of us who refuse to play in the land of monthly fleecing known as Adobe. The Affinity offering has a long way to go before it’s on par with the 800 lb. gorilla, but it is making solid progress in many areas.
You say “you might return to Adobe if this is never resolved”. That makes perfect sense, as they definitely won't disrespect you with their forever software rental plan that’s oh-so-affordable. You also say you “think an apology is due” you. I think an apology may in fact be due, but I’d disagree with who owes it and to whom.

Actually, version 1 was released several years ago, with ALL updates to that version being free to all users. Version 2 is exactly the same in that regard (there has already been at least one update released to all the version 2 apps and a number of betas).
Why do you think that version 3 will be released as a yearly update?

_Th reacted to PaulEC in Crop Tool improvements
One thing that I do think would be helpful with cropping, and also other tools, especially the Perspective Tool, would be a keyboard shortcut to enable mirrored movement. So that, for example, two opposite sides/nodes could be moved in and out together, in sync, rather than trying to balance both by eye.
